Yes, at the molecular level. A study published in Science on October 8, 2026, reports that dogs of giant breeds lose a particular kind of DNA methylation faster with age than small dogs do. The difference is measured across a population of dogs, and it describes a pattern in chemical tags on DNA rather than a verdict on any individual animal.
What the study measured
The team examined DNA methylation in 864 dogs enrolled in the Dog Aging Project and mapped more than 3 million methylation sites. The figures below come from Arizona State University’s announcement and from Nature’s news report on the paper, both published in 2026. The full methods are not covered here.
| Measure | Reported figure | How to read it |
|---|---|---|
| Methylation sites mapped | More than 3 million | Arizona State University, 2026. Counts sites, not genes or dogs. |
| LINE1-associated regions that lose methylation with aging | More than 40% | Arizona State University, 2026. A share of regions, not a share of dogs. |
| LINE1 methylation lost per year, giant vs. small breeds | About 35% more in giant breeds, on average | Arizona State University, 2026. A relative difference in the annual rate, not a 35-point gap in methylation levels. |
Epigenetic is not the same as genetic
DNA methylation is a chemical tag attached to DNA that can influence whether nearby genes are active, without changing the sequence of letters that makes up the DNA itself. That distinction is why the study’s title uses the word “epigenetic.” The finding concerns how the tagging pattern shifts as dogs age, and how that shift differs by body size. It does not show that large dogs carry a different genetic code.
What LINE1 elements are
LINE1 belongs to a family of transposable elements: stretches of DNA that can copy themselves and insert the copies elsewhere in the genome. Popular coverage often calls them “jumping genes.” The nickname describes that copy-and-insert ability. It does not mean the elements move around under the dog’s or the cell’s control.

How the pattern might connect to size and lifespan
The scientists propose that when methylation declines, the regulation that keeps LINE1 elements in check may loosen. According to the university’s announcement, these elements can copy and insert themselves, and their activity has been linked to genomic instability and age-related disease.
Whether LINE1 activity drives aging or is a consequence of it remains unresolved, and the team says more work is needed to distinguish the two. The study therefore offers a plausible molecular thread connecting body size to the known pattern of shorter lives in larger breeds. It does not establish that thread as the cause.

The sex difference on the X chromosome
The study also reports higher LINE1 methylation on the X chromosome in males than in females. The scientists described this as unexpected. It is a separate comparison from the size result, and it should not be read as proof that sex explains differences in how long dogs live.

The epigenetic clock and the mortality association
The team built an epigenetic clock, a model that estimates age from methylation patterns. Nature’s report says the clock predicted chronological age to within a year. It also reports that dogs whose epigenetic age was older than their actual age had a higher risk of death in the following two years.

That is a population-level association from a single study. It is not evidence that a clock like this can reliably tell an owner or veterinarian how long a particular dog will live.
Why dogs are a useful model for aging
Senior author Noah Snyder-Mackler, professor at Arizona State University’s School of Life Sciences and Center for Evolution and Medicine, explained the study’s appeal in the university’s announcement: “Dogs provide an extraordinary model for understanding aging because they show dramatic variation in lifespan within a single species.”

Sources and scope
This article draws on Arizona State University’s 2026 announcement, Nature’s 2026 news report, and the study’s title and DOI, 10.1126/science.aeb2986. The cohort covers 864 dogs, so the results should not be assumed to apply to every breed or every individual dog.
The Bottom Line
Large dogs show faster age-linked loss of methylation on LINE1 elements than small dogs, a molecular pattern that offers a possible link to the size and lifespan gap. The study does not prove that LINE1 causes faster aging, and it does not give owners a way to predict a specific dog’s lifespan.
