Sony’s current support documentation does not describe a built-in VPN app for PS4 or PS5, and it does not show that a VPN makes games faster, lowers latency or fixes Remote Play. If you want console traffic to pass through a VPN, the only approach the evidence treats as plausible is a router with VPN-client functionality, and whether that works depends on your exact router, firmware, VPN provider and internet service provider. Most connection problems are better handled with the documented setup options, a wired Ethernet connection and a measured bandwidth check. Start there, and treat a VPN as a configuration choice rather than an optimization.

Start with what you are trying to fix

“Optimizing” a PlayStation connection can mean three different jobs. Each one has a different first step, and a VPN is relevant to only one of them.

What you want Where to start Is a VPN documented as relevant?
Steadier online play or fewer connection drops Wired Ethernet, the console’s network setup, and a bandwidth check No. Sony’s materials do not show that a VPN improves latency or gameplay.
Remote Play that will not connect Sony’s Remote Play troubleshooting sequence, bandwidth, UDP port 8572 and NAT type No. VPN is not documented as a Remote Play fix.
All console traffic routed through a VPN A router with VPN-client mode, checked against your provider’s instructions Only at the router level, and only if the router and provider are compatible.

What a VPN changes, and what it does not

A VPN sends your traffic through an encrypted tunnel to a server run by the VPN provider. The network path and the address that online services see change as a result. That is a routing change, not a bandwidth upgrade. Your speed is still set by your internet plan, your home network and whatever else is using the connection, and an extra hop through a tunnel can lengthen the path between your console and the server it is talking to. A VPN therefore adds a variable to troubleshoot rather than removing one.

Step 1: Get the supported baseline working first

Sony’s setup guidance covers both wired and wireless connections for PS5 and PS4. The menu names below come from Sony’s setup page for the India English version of its support site (PlayStation Support: How to set up an internet connection on PlayStation consoles). Labels can differ by region and by system software version, so match the wording on your own screen to the steps.

Wi-Fi setup

Sony also documents wireless setup on the same internet-connection page. Use that page’s wireless steps rather than menu paths taken from older articles.

IPv6 compatibility

PS5 supports IPv6 but not IPv6-only connections. If your router is set to IPv6-only, enable IPv4 as well before you troubleshoot anything else.

Advanced network settings

The advanced settings on PS5 and the custom settings on PS4 include IP address, DHCP host name, DNS, MTU and proxy. Sony advises users who are not familiar with these to ask their ISP or network administrator. Changing DNS is not a VPN. It alters how domain names are looked up and does not send traffic through a tunnel, so do not use a DNS change as a substitute for one.

Step 2: Route the console through a VPN only at the router

Because the reviewed Sony materials do not describe a native console VPN client, a router is the only place this guide treats a VPN as a plausible option. In that setup, every device on the network, including the console, uses the tunnel. Before you buy or configure anything, check the following.

  • Commercial-grade Security Anywhere – Protect your home network with AiProtection Classic, powered by Trend Micro. And when away from home, ASUS Instant Guard gives you a one-click secure VPN.
  • Client mode. The router must connect out to the VPN provider as a client. A router that can only host a VPN server, or that passes VPN traffic through without acting as the client, will not do this.
  • Protocol and firmware. Confirm which VPN protocols your provider supports and that the router’s current firmware includes them.
  • Throughput. Encryption uses processing power, so the router’s VPN performance has to be high enough for your internet plan. Compare the speed you pay for with the VPN throughput the manufacturer states.
  • Provider instructions. Follow your provider’s current router setup guide. Its compatibility list is the authority for which models work.

Smart DNS is a different mechanism. It changes how domain names resolve and does not route traffic through a VPN tunnel. This guide does not evaluate any Smart DNS service.

Sony’s materials reviewed here do not say how a PlayStation account’s country setting interacts with VPN use. This guide does not claim that a VPN changes an account’s region or overrides service terms, so check your account’s terms before you change anything.

Step 3: Measure your connection against Sony’s Remote Play figures

Sony’s Remote Play troubleshooting page sets out the connection figures below (PlayStation Support: How to troubleshoot Remote Play connection issues). These are operational guidance from Sony. They are not a guarantee of smooth play, and Sony’s pages do not attribute them to a named study or independent benchmark.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Remote Play requirement Sony’s figure Notes
Minimum upload speed 5 Mbps Sony’s stated minimum for Remote Play, which applies to upload and download alike.
Minimum download speed 5 Mbps Same minimum. Sony states: “The minimum required connection speed for Remote Play is 5Mbps for both upload and download.”
Recommended speed for best performance At least 15 Mbps upload and download Sony states: “For best performance, we recommend a high-speed connection with upload and download speeds of at least 15 Mbps.”
Port used by Remote Play UDP port 8572 Sony states: “Remote Play uses UDP Port 8572 to connect to your console or mobile device.”
NAT condition NAT Type 3 may prevent Remote Play Sony’s Remote Play guidance on the PS Remote Play support page warns about this condition (PS Remote Play: When Remote Play isn’t available).

Test at the console’s own connection and not only from a phone on Wi-Fi, and run the test while other people in the household are not downloading or streaming large files. A result that clears 5 Mbps in both directions meets Sony’s minimum. A result below 15 Mbps in either direction falls short of Sony’s recommended level.

Step 4: Work through Remote Play problems in order

Sony’s troubleshooting sequence runs from the console’s basic status to the router. Work down the list and stop when the connection succeeds.

  1. Confirm the console is connected to the internet and that its system software is up to date.
  2. Enable Remote Play. On PS5, go to Settings > System > Remote Play. On PS4, go to Settings > Remote Play Connection Settings (PlayStation Support: How to change Remote Play settings).
  3. Sign in with the same PlayStation Network account on the console and on the client device.
  4. On PS4, make sure the console is activated as your primary PS4, as Sony’s troubleshooting sequence directs.
  5. Check that the game or feature you want supports Remote Play. Sony notes that some games and features do not.
  6. Use a wired connection for the console. If the client is on Wi-Fi, Sony recommends trying 5 GHz rather than 2.4 GHz.
  7. Reduce competing traffic by pausing large downloads, updates and streams on the same network.
  8. Allow UDP port 8572 through the router. Sony says port forwarding may help if the port is blocked. Find the settings for your router through its manufacturer or your ISP, not from unverified port lists.
  9. If your console or router reports NAT Type 3, treat that as a possible cause of the failure. Sony’s guidance is that this condition may prevent Remote Play.

Wired Ethernet or Wi-Fi

Sony describes Ethernet as the stronger option for a console: “An Ethernet cable is the fastest and most reliable way to connect your PlayStation to your home network” (Sony Support: How to check streaming quality and add settings menu in PS remote play?, last modified 2026-01-21). That article also says Ethernet has lower latency than Wi-Fi, and that network speed and other bandwidth use still affect results.

Factor Wired Ethernet Wi-Fi
Sony’s stated characteristic Fastest and most reliable connection to the home network, with lower latency than Wi-Fi. Documented as a setup option. Sony does not rank its performance against Ethernet in the pages cited here.
Remote Play guidance Sony recommends a wired connection for stability. If the client is wireless, Sony recommends 5 GHz.
What it does not fix A slow internet plan, congestion on the wider network or a distant game server. The same limits, plus interference and signal strength, which can vary from room to room.

A standard Ethernet cable is the most directly supported accessory for this guide. It connects the console to your router and is not a VPN product. A VPN-capable router is a separate purchase, and only the router-level setup described above applies to it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What the evidence does not establish

  • Sony’s current support pages do not establish a native VPN app for PS4 or PS5.
  • No authoritative test compares VPN and non-VPN latency or gameplay on PlayStation consoles.
  • No compatibility list exists for specific routers or VPN providers in the material reviewed here, so this guide does not validate any router model or provider setup.
  • Sony’s pages do not say a VPN unlocks a PlayStation Store region, prevents account restrictions or affects matchmaking. Do not expect those outcomes from a VPN.

If you need answers to those questions, look for an official statement from the provider or from Sony, and check the instructions for your exact region and system software version.
