If you watch in-home Xfinity TV channels through the Xfinity Stream app on a Samsung Smart TV, that viewing does not count toward your monthly Xfinity Internet data usage, according to Xfinity’s own support pages as of October 2026. The exceptions are TV Go and NOW TV content, which Xfinity says is delivered over an internet or mobile connection and can count toward applicable data thresholds. Whether a 1.2 TB limit applies to you at all depends on your plan, not on the app.
Why the app name does not decide whether data is counted
People often assume that any streaming app draws from the same internet allowance. Xfinity’s rule works differently. It looks at how the programming reaches your TV, not which app shows it. Xfinity’s overview page, “What’s the Xfinity Stream app?”, describes the in-home case this way:
“When you’re in your home and connected to your in-home Xfinity network, streaming video to the Xfinity Stream app and portal is an in-home cable service delivered over Xfinity’s managed cable network, not over the internet. It will not count towards your Xfinity Internet monthly data usage.”

In practice, that means two things have to be true for the in-home exemption to apply: the programming is in-home Xfinity TV service, and the TV is connected to your in-home Xfinity network.

Which viewing counts and which does not
The table below separates the three cases Xfinity addresses. The third row is the one most readers miss.

The Xfinity overview states the TV Go and NOW TV rule in these terms: “If you watch any TV Go or NOW TV and streaming content through Xfinity Stream, that programming is delivered over an internet or mobile connection and will count towards any data usage thresholds that may apply.” Because the rule depends on the content type, a single evening can split across both categories. Watching a regular channel is exempt, while switching to a TV Go title can start counting.

Whether a cap applies depends on your plan
The 1.2 TB figure is often quoted as if it applied to every Xfinity Internet customer. Xfinity’s “Xfinity Internet 1.2 TB data plan FAQs” page says otherwise. New Internet plans include unlimited data and equipment at no extra cost, and the 1.2 TB monthly limit applies to older legacy plans. The same FAQ lists exclusions, including new plans, several named plan categories, unlimited-data plans, and some markets. A set of Northeast states and parts of North Carolina and Ohio are listed as market exclusions in the FAQ as of October 2026.

- First over-limit month in any 12-month period: a courtesy month, with no charge under the FAQ’s current wording.
- Later over-limit months: $10 for each 50 GB over the limit, up to $100 per month.
- Stability: Xfinity says this overage policy is subject to change, so treat these figures as the terms at the time of writing.
Xfinity also reports an average of “around 498 GB per month” in the same FAQ. That is a company-wide average for Internet customers, not a measure of Samsung Stream viewing, and it should not be read as an estimate of what your TV uses.
How to check your own usage
Usage information is available to account holders who can see the account. Xfinity states that only Primary and Manager users can view it.

- Sign in at the Xfinity website, or open the Xfinity app.
- Go to Services, then Internet, then Internet data usage.
- Confirm the plan shown in the account. The plan name and data allowance on that screen are what apply to you, not the figures in an article.
- If you do not see usage details, check whether you are signed in as a Primary or Manager user.
The plan itself can also be confirmed from the app, the website, or your bill, as Xfinity’s FAQ notes.

Usage can continue after you turn the TV off
Xfinity’s partner-device FAQ for the Xfinity Stream app warns that “Streaming channels or content may keep using internet data even if you turn off your device.” This matters most for internet-delivered TV Go and NOW TV content, which counts toward your data. To stop background use, log out of the app when you are not watching.

What is not established
- No Samsung-specific data figure. The sources reviewed do not publish how many gigabytes an hour Xfinity Stream uses on a Samsung TV, and this article does not estimate one.
- No model-year list. Xfinity’s overview confirms Samsung Smart TV as a supported device category, but it does not list which Samsung model years are compatible.
- No blanket exemption. The in-home exemption covers in-home Xfinity TV service on the home network. It does not make all Stream viewing free of data use.
- Not a universal plan rule. The 1.2 TB limit and overage terms apply only to the plans Xfinity describes, and some markets are excluded.
