Lobster clasps

Toggles
A toggle is easy to see and easy to handle because the bar is large. The trade-off is that the bar must stay across its ring during wear. A toggle that looks secure on a display may still shift if the chain is worn loosely, so check the fit with the chain on.
Magnetic clasps

Why no style is automatically the most secure
It is tempting to rank clasps by strength, but the available jewelry-industry guidance does not support that. Security depends on the specific construction and dimensions of the clasp, the weight of the chain and pendant, and how the necklace is worn. - Measure the chain’s end link or connecting ring. The clasp’s opening and body must fit it without forcing.
- Compare the clasp’s dimensions with the seller’s listed specifications. Confirm them before you order, because compatibility varies between chains.
- Consider the weight of the chain and pendant. General guidance says heavier pieces may need a more substantial closure, but the sources do not give numeric load limits, so use your judgment and a jeweler’s advice for heavy pieces.

United States
The Federal Trade Commission’s consumer guidance says that the words “silver,” “sterling,” and “sterling silver” describe products that contain 92.5% pure silver. Its article, “Buying Platinum, Gold, and Silver Jewelry,” also says a 925 mark means 925 parts per thousand are pure silver. The FTC further says silver items must show the name or U.S. registered trademark of the person or company standing behind the mark. Review the seller’s description and marks against that guidance, and treat a stamp as the maker’s claim rather than independent proof of content. United Kingdom and other markets
Hallmark rules are set by country, so the US description does not apply everywhere. The Sheffield Assay Office says that the sponsor’s mark, the fineness mark, and the assay-office mark are compulsory in the UK. The lion passant for 925 silver and the date letter are voluntary additional marks. If you are buying from another country, check its own hallmarking system rather than assuming the same marks mean the same thing.

Can a necklace clasp be replaced?
Yes, in most cases a worn or unsuitable clasp can be replaced, but the method depends on how the old clasp is attached. Some chains use a simple ring that you can open and close, while others use soldered or otherwise fixed connections that need a jeweler. Follow these steps:
- Inspect the clasp for a loose spring, a bent lever, or a worn catch that no longer closes firmly.
- Inspect the connection between the clasp and the chain, including the ring, jump ring, or solder joint.
- Note the end link or ring dimensions and the weight of the chain before ordering a replacement.
- Order a sterling silver clasp only after confirming its dimensions, metal content, and attachment format with the seller.
- Ask a jeweler to attach the new clasp if the connection is soldered, delicate, or unfamiliar to you.
When to see a jeweler
