Receiving Twitch chat is the easy part of building a chat overlay. Showing it faithfully and keeping it working through a long stream is where the work is. That is the central lesson in an engineering account by Zimtzimt, published on DEV Community on 29 September 2026, about building Petal, a free and open-source chat overlay for OBS. The author describes six practical problems: moderation events, Unicode indexing, third-party and layered emotes, CSS transform conflicts, metadata that arrives late, and connections that fail silently. This article walks through each one, with the author’s fixes and the limits of what they show.
Why receiving chat is the easy part
According to the author, the initial chat parser took about 40 lines. The overlay connects to Twitch chat over WebSocket and speaks IRC-style commands. In the example, it logs in with an anonymous, read-only justinfan nickname, which needs no account or token to read messages.
The author requests two capabilities. twitch.tv/tags supplies message metadata such as name color, badges, user ID, and emote positions. twitch.tv/commands supplies events, including CLEARCHAT for a timeout and CLEARMSG for a deleted message. Everything that follows depends on those two streams, and the author’s account is the only basis for the behavior described here. This article does not independently confirm current Twitch protocol guarantees, so check Twitch’s developer documentation before building against them.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsModeration events change what stays on screen
A chat overlay that only appends lines will show messages that moderators have already removed. The author’s overlay listens for CLEARCHAT and CLEARMSG and updates the display when they arrive. A timeout clears the affected user’s messages, and a deletion removes one specific message. Without these events, the overlay drifts away from what viewers see in the native chat.

Emote positions count code points, not JavaScript characters
The clearest debugging lesson in the article involves emoji. The author’s example places a waving-hand emoji before “Kappa.” In JavaScript, string indexing works in UTF-16 code units, and that emoji takes two of them. The author’s account says Twitch counts it as one code point when giving emote positions. Slicing the raw string with those positions therefore lands on the wrong characters, and the emote renders in the wrong place or not at all.
The fix is to split the message into code points before slicing:
const chars = Array.from(message.text); // splits by code point
// Twitch emote ranges are inclusive, so add 1 to the end index
const emoteText = chars.slice(start, end + 1).join("");
Code points are not the same as user-perceived characters. Some emoji, such as flags or skin-tone sequences, are built from several code points. The author’s approach matches how Twitch counts positions, which is what matters for placing emotes, but it is not a general text-segmentation method. Use this for offsets only, and do not use it to decide how many characters a viewer sees.

Third-party emotes look like ordinary words
Twitch marks its own emotes in the message metadata. According to the article, 7TV, BetterTTV, and FrankerFaceZ emotes get no such marking in the message body. A viewer typing Kappa and a viewer typing a 7TV emote name produce the same plain text. The overlay has to load each provider’s emote set and check every word against those sets.
Some third-party emotes are zero-width, meaning they are meant to sit on top of another emote rather than take up their own space. The author stacks these in a single cell of a CSS inline grid, so the base emote and its overlays share one position. The article describes this layout but does not give measurements for it.
Animated effects and static transforms conflict
The author’s overlay flips some emotes with a static transform. The problem appears when an animation also sets transform. The animation overrides the static value, and the flip disappears.

Shock mount on the gaming microphone loosen, further reducing machine noises and vibrations caused by gaming. External detachable pop filter reduce popping noise but not block the computer game screen.
The author’s fix is to use the individual transform properties, translate, rotate, and scale, for animated movement. Because each property is separate, the static flip and the animation can be composed rather than competing for one property. This depends on browser support, which is covered in the compatibility section below.
Metadata arrives out of order
When the overlay starts, it opens the chat connection, fetches about a dozen emote and badge lists, and opens three live-update sockets. Nothing guarantees which of these finishes first. The author reports three ordering problems. A chat message can arrive before the emote data it uses. A user’s name styling can arrive after that user’s first message. And emote sets can change during a stream.
The author’s design response is to keep the raw chat text as the stored record and treat each displayed line as derived data. When metadata updates, the overlay tokenizes the raw message again rather than patching the old rendering. In the author’s words: “Keep the raw input, and make the view something you can compute again.” This avoids a whole class of bugs in which the display holds stale state that never gets corrected.

Connections can fail silently
Most reconnection logic watches for the socket’s close event. The author points out a second case that the close event does not catch: the socket stays open but delivers nothing. The overlay then looks alive while showing no new messages.
Liveness checks
The author sends a ping every 60 seconds and reconnects after 90 seconds without any incoming data. These values are the author’s chosen settings for this overlay, not a published standard or a measured best practice. A shorter window detects dead connections faster but risks reconnecting on quiet channels, so the right value depends on how busy the channel is.
Backoff and jitter
For reconnect attempts, the author uses exponential backoff capped at one minute. Each delay is multiplied by a random factor between 0.5 and 1.5. The randomness spreads reconnects out, so that thousands of overlays do not all retry at the same moment after an outage.

Browser versions decide which CSS works
An OBS browser source runs an embedded Chromium, and its version determines which CSS features are available. The article gives these examples. Verify them against OBS’s current release notes before relying on them, because the article is a dated snapshot.
| Runtime or feature | Chromium version cited | Note from the article |
|---|---|---|
| OBS 30 | Chromium 103 | Example embedded browser version |
| OBS 31 | Chromium 127 | Example embedded browser version after the update |
Individual transform properties (translate, rotate, scale) |
Chromium 104 required | Feature needed for the composed-transform fix above |
On OBS 30, the individual transform properties are not available, so the animation fix will not work as described. Test in the OBS version your viewers actually run, not just the newest one.
