To save a webpage as a PDF, open the page and use the print controls in your browser or device. Choose a PDF destination (Firefox calls it “Save to PDF”), check the preview, and save. A PDF can be opened in most modern PDF readers, but the layout you see on screen and the interactive features inside the file are not guaranteed to survive the trip. The steps below cover Microsoft Edge, Firefox, and Safari on iPhone and Mac, along with the settings that change the result and the compatibility limits to plan for.
Save a webpage as a PDF, by platform
The route depends on your browser and device. The table compares the starting point, the save step, and the layout controls each route documents.
| Platform | Starting point | Save-as-PDF step | Layout controls shown in the cited help |
|---|---|---|---|
| Microsoft Edge (Windows or macOS) | Ctrl+P (Windows) or Command+P (macOS), or Settings and more > Print | Choose an available PDF destination in the print dialog | Pages per sheet, margins, scaling, headers and footers, background graphics, selection printing |
| Firefox | Print preview | Destination: “Save to PDF” | Orientation, page selection, paper size, scale, pages per sheet, margins, original or simplified format where available, headers and footers, backgrounds |
| Safari on iPhone | Safari page or share controls | Markup (optional), Done, then Save File To | not stated in the cited Apple help |
| Safari on Mac | File > Print | PDF menu > Save as PDF | not stated in the cited Apple help; the PDF menu also offers password options |
Microsoft Edge
- Open the page you want to save.
- Press Ctrl+P on Windows or Command+P on macOS, or select Settings and more > Print.
- In the print dialog, choose the PDF destination from the printer list. Microsoft’s help does not give one label that applies to every configuration, so look for the option that saves to a file rather than a physical printer.
- Set the layout options, then check the preview before you save. Microsoft specifically advises checking scaled output.
- Complete the save, name the file, and choose where it goes.
Mozilla Firefox
- Open the page and press Ctrl+P (Windows) or Command+P (macOS), or open the Firefox menu and choose Print.
- In the print preview, open the Destination menu and select “Save to PDF.”
- Adjust orientation, paper size, scale, margins, and the other options in the preview panel. Check how the pages break before continuing.
- Complete the save and name the file.
Safari on iPhone
- Open the page in Safari.
- Use the page or share controls to open the page as a PDF preview. The first button you tap can vary with Safari’s tab layout.
- Tap Markup if you want to annotate the page. Otherwise, tap Done.
- Tap Save File To, choose a location in Files, and save.
Safari on Mac
Do not use File > Save As for this task. Apple’s current Safari guide documents only Web Archive and Page Source formats there, and neither is a PDF.

- Open the page in Safari.
- Choose File > Print.
- Open the PDF menu at the bottom of the print dialog and select Save as PDF.
- Name the file, choose a location, and save. Apple documents password options within this Print-to-PDF workflow if you need them.
Google Chrome
This guide does not give Chrome desktop menu steps, because the current desktop export path was not confirmed against the interface. Chrome’s official help documents PDF viewing and management on Android, which is a different task from exporting a page.

Settings that change the result
Most layout problems come from a handful of options. Change them in the preview, not after saving.
- Background graphics. In Edge and Firefox, background colors and images may be left out of the print output. Turn them on when shading, colored headings, or images matter. Microsoft recommends this when the output differs from the webpage.
- Scale. A higher scale can push content past the page edge. Reduce the scale, or change the paper size or orientation, until the right-hand content is complete.
- Margins. Narrower margins fit more text per page but leave less room for notes or binding. Adjust them to suit how the file will be read.
- Pages per sheet and selection. Edge can print only a selected part of a page. Firefox supports page selection. Both are useful for excerpts, but the page break may fall in an awkward place.
- Simplified or Immersive Reader output. Firefox offers a simplified format where available. Edge offers Immersive Reader as a clutter-free print route, but Microsoft says it is not available on every site. Both can remove navigation, sidebars, and other surrounding content, so confirm the preview still shows what you need.
- Headers and footers. Browsers may add the page title, URL, and date. Turn them off if you are preparing a document for formal distribution.
Why the PDF may look different from the page
A PDF records what the browser sends to the print engine, not a copy of the screen. Mozilla’s Firefox help explains the core issue directly: “Web pages can set themselves up to appear different on paper to how they look on screen, so don’t be surprised to see some changes.” (Mozilla Support, How to print web pages in Firefox.) Sites can include print stylesheets that hide menus, change fonts, or reflow columns. Your printer and paper settings also affect the output, so a PDF saved on one machine can differ from one saved on another.

Will everyone be able to open the PDF?
For most readers, yes. Apple’s guidance says a PDF can be read by people without the app that created it, as long as they have a PDF viewer such as Preview or Adobe Acrobat. That is why PDF works well for sharing a static snapshot of an article, invoice, or public notice.

Microsoft’s Edge PDF reader documentation states: “XML Forms Architecture (XFA), is a legacy format of forms that isn’t supported in Microsoft Edge.” (Microsoft Learn, PDF reader in Microsoft Edge.) Before you send a file to someone else, check it this way:
- Open the PDF in the reader your recipient is most likely to use, not only in the one you saved it from.
- Check page breaks, fonts, images, and any links that matter.
- If the page has forms or interactive elements, test them. If they fail, send the original web address alongside the PDF as a fallback.
- Never describe the file as identical on every device. Describe it as a shareable snapshot.
Troubleshooting common problems
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Colors, shading, or images are missing | Background graphics are off | Turn on background graphics in the print options and check the preview again |
| Text is cut off at the right edge | Scale or paper size does not fit the page layout | Reduce the scale, switch orientation, or choose a different paper size |
| Menus, sidebars, or ads appear in the PDF | The page is printing its full layout | Use Firefox’s simplified format or Edge Immersive Reader where available |
| Immersive Reader option is missing in Edge | Not all sites support it | Use the standard print route and adjust the layout options |
| Form fields do not work in the recipient’s reader | Interactive or legacy XFA content may not be supported | Test in the recipient’s viewer and send the original page as a fallback |
