The Xiaomi Redmi Note 17 5G and the vivo S2 5G split the decision. On the figures available, the vivo S2 5G posts higher benchmark scores on one comparison site and has a higher-resolution selfie camera. The Redmi Note 17 5G has the larger display, a larger battery figure than the vivo, a six-year security-update promise from Xiaomi, and a listed price about ₹11,991 lower. The better phone depends on whether selfie quality and processing results or screen size, battery and support period matter more to you, and the exact model and market you buy in will decide the final numbers.

Performance: what the benchmark gap does and does not show
The vivo S2 5G scores 956,029 on AnTuTu against 622,466 for the Redmi Note 17 5G, both as listed on 91mobiles. The gap is large on paper, but these are synthetic scores from a third-party comparison page, and we did not run the tests ourselves. A synthetic score measures how a chip performs in a fixed benchmark workload. It does not guarantee smoother app launches, gaming frame rates or thermal behaviour in daily use.

The PCMark figures on the same page, 16h 14m for the Redmi and 14h 57m for the vivo in the page’s column order, suggest the Redmi may last longer in that test. The page does not define the test conditions in a way we could verify, so treat that figure as the comparison site’s own measurement rather than a standard result.
The processors also come from different families. Xiaomi names the Snapdragon 4 Gen 4 for the Redmi Note 17 5G, while the vivo uses a MediaTek Dimensity 7360 Turbo. Chip names alone do not tell you how a phone will perform once cooling, software and memory settings are factored in.

Display
The Redmi Note 17 5G has the larger screen at 6.99 inches, compared with 6.83 inches for the vivo S2 5G. Both are listed at 120Hz, so motion smoothness should be similar on paper. The vivo’s listed peak brightness, 3000 nits, is much higher than the Redmi’s 1800 nits. Peak brightness describes short bursts of maximum output, usually in direct sunlight or on highlights, and it is not the same as sustained brightness. If outdoor readability is a priority, check reviews that measure it directly.

Both phones list a 50MP main camera, so the rear hardware looks similar at the headline level. The vivo adds a 2MP depth sensor, which only helps with background-blur effects, and the Redmi’s module list is shorter. A higher megapixel count does not establish image quality on its own; sensor size, processing and lens quality matter as much.

The front camera is the clearest difference. The vivo’s listed 32MP front camera is four times the Redmi’s 8MP sensor by resolution. For buyers who take many selfies or video calls, that is the most concrete advantage on the spec sheet, although the resolution figure alone does not show how the photos will look.
Battery and charging
The Redmi’s battery figure depends on which Xiaomi page you read. Xiaomi Global lists 7700mAh, while Xiaomi India lists 8000mAh as a typical value. The 91mobiles comparison also lists 8000mAh. This is a regional difference, not a single fixed spec, so do not assume one number applies everywhere.

The vivo S2 5G is listed at 7050mAh and 44W charging on 91mobiles. Even at the lower Redmi figure of 7700mAh, the Redmi’s listed capacity is larger. Battery life still depends on screen brightness, network conditions and the processor, so a larger capacity does not automatically mean longer use.

Software support
Xiaomi’s Global product page states: “6 years of security updates.” That is the clearest manufacturer-published support promise for either phone in the sources we reviewed. Support terms can vary by market or device configuration, so confirm the terms for the region where you buy.

The 91mobiles comparison lists four years of OS updates and six years of security updates for the Redmi. For the vivo, it lists three years of OS updates and five years of security updates. vivo’s security patch page includes the S2 and S2 5G in its model list but does not state a support term, so the vivo figures come only from the comparison page.
Storage and configurations
The comparison page lists the Redmi Note 17 5G at 128GB for the variant it compared, and the vivo at 128GB and 256GB. The Redmi’s storage type is not stated in the sources we used, while the vivo is listed with UFS 3.1 storage. Available configurations vary by market, so confirm the exact RAM and storage of the model on the listing you are buying.
Some vivo S2 5G specifications, launch details and India prices appear on a vivo Community post, a user-generated thread about the S2 5G. That is not an official vivo product listing, so use it only as a pointer to check against vivo’s own materials.

91mobiles lists the Redmi Note 17 5G at ₹27,999 and the vivo S2 5G at ₹39,990, both at Amazon. The difference is ₹11,991 on those figures. These are listing prices from the comparison page, not live checkout prices, and the page does not give a date for them. Prices change with offers, stock, seller and configuration, so the gap you see when you buy may be different.
Which phone to choose
Choose the Redmi Note 17 5G if
- You want the larger display and a larger battery figure, and the official regional version offers the battery capacity you expect.
- A six-year security-update promise from Xiaomi matters more to you than the vivo’s higher listed benchmark scores.
- You want the lower listed price and are comfortable with a smaller front camera.
Choose the vivo S2 5G if
- Selfie quality is a priority, and the 32MP front camera fits your use.
- Higher listed benchmark scores and UFS 3.1 storage matter for the way you use the phone.
- You can pay about ₹11,991 more and confirm the exact model and official specifications before buying.
Checks before you buy
- Confirm the exact RAM, storage and model number on the retailer listing, and make sure you are comparing the same configuration for both phones.
- Check the official Xiaomi page for your country, since the Redmi’s battery and support terms differ between Xiaomi Global and Xiaomi India.
- Look for an official vivo specifications page for the S2 5G in your market, and confirm its battery, charging and support terms there.
- Compare the current checkout price, seller, offers, warranty and included accessories. Xiaomi India says the Redmi package includes a protective case and a pre-applied screen protector, but box contents can vary by region.
- Look for independent reviews that test the screen brightness, camera output and battery life under real use, since the benchmark and battery figures here are not independently verified.
