In the United States, the main free way to watch local broadcast channels without cable is an over-the-air (OTA) antenna connected to your television. The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) publishes a Digital TV Reception Map that estimates which stations may reach a given location, and paid live-TV streaming services are the main subscription alternative. Before you buy anything, confirm which specific stations you need and whether each route carries them at your address, because reception and lineups both depend on where you live.

Start with the stations you actually need

“Local channels” is not one fixed lineup. Each market has its own set of network affiliates, independent stations, and digital subchannels, and the same network can be carried differently from one city to the next. Before comparing options, write down:

  • The network stations you want by call sign and channel number (for example, the local ABC, CBS, NBC, Fox, or PBS affiliate).
  • Any subchannels you watch, such as weather, sports, or secondary network feeds, because these are not always carried by every service.
  • Whether you need live viewing only or also want to record, pause, or rewind.

This list is the test you will apply to every option below.

Check predicted antenna reception before you buy

The FCC’s Digital TV Reception Maps page at transition.fcc.gov/mb/engineering/dtvmaps lets you look up an address and see which stations its signal-strength calculations predict. The calculations assume a traditional reception model in which the antenna sits outdoors, 30 feet above ground level. Treat the result as a planning estimate. An indoor antenna, a shorter mast, nearby buildings, trees, or hills can all change what you actually receive, and the map does not guarantee reception at any individual home.

Mount the antenna high, near a window facing local broadcast towers (Check "dtv gov maps" for available channels), to avoid obstacles and interference. Actual Reception depends on location, terrain, and weather, always re-scan for channels after moving the antenna. If you have any issues, please contact us. We will provide professional service and a satisfactory solution for you.

Use the map to choose an antenna type and mounting plan, then compare its predictions with the station list you wrote down. If a station you need is marked as weak or absent, a more capable outdoor antenna or a different installation point may be worth testing, but no setup can be guaranteed to recover every signal.

Option 1: an over-the-air antenna

An antenna receives the free broadcast signals that local stations transmit. You pay once for the hardware and do not need a pay-TV subscription to watch those broadcasts. The FCC’s consumer guidance on watching stations over the air describes this route in its own terms; see FCC guidance on watching a station over the air without a pay TV subscription.

Setting up the antenna

  1. Choose an antenna based on your predicted reception from the FCC map and where you can realistically mount it, outdoors or indoors.
  2. Connect the antenna cable to the antenna or cable input on the back of the TV, or to the antenna input on a set-top tuner.
  3. Switch the TV’s input to the antenna or air source. On many sets this is labeled “Antenna” or “Air,” and it may be selected from the input or source menu rather than from the channel list.
  4. Run the TV’s channel scan (menu labels vary by brand; look for “Auto Tune,” “Channel Scan,” or “Auto Program” in the setup or channel menu). Scan again after moving the antenna or changing its direction.
  5. Check each station on your list. If a station is missing or breaks up, move the antenna, adjust its orientation toward the transmitters the map identifies, and rescan.

Stations can also change channels or power levels over time, so a rescan is worth doing if a channel disappears.

Analog-only televisions

The FCC’s consumer document says an analog-only television needs a digital converter box to receive over-the-air digital signals. This guidance applies to sets that lack a digital tuner. Most televisions sold in recent years include a digital tuner, so check the TV’s specifications or its model label before buying a converter. Do not assume every older set needs one.

Recording over the air

An antenna alone gives you live viewing. If you want to record broadcast programs, you can add an OTA DVR or network tuner, which is optional hardware. Confirm that a specific model supports the antenna inputs you need, the recording features you want, and the current firmware or product support before you purchase it, because product features and support change.

Local station apps

Some local stations offer their own apps or websites with live or on-demand programming. These are station-specific and not standardized across markets, so check the official app of each station you want and what it actually streams before relying on it.

Option 2: live-TV streaming services

Live-TV streaming services deliver local network stations over the internet for a recurring subscription. Local availability varies by market, and the lineup can differ between plans. Check the exact stations you listed against each provider’s own lookup before you subscribe.

YouTube TV

YouTube TV’s help page on available locations and networks on YouTube TV explains which local networks it carries by area. Its overview page at tv.youtube.com/learn/hululivetv states that it covers “over 98% of U.S. TV households.” That is a provider coverage claim, not an independent FCC measurement, and it does not confirm that a given address receives your specific stations.

Comparing the routes

Route Cost pattern What to verify Best fit
Over-the-air antenna One-time hardware purchase; no pay-TV subscription needed for broadcast reception Predicted reception on the FCC map; placement and terrain; in-home results after a scan Viewers who want free local broadcasts and can set up an antenna
Live-TV streaming (YouTube TV, Hulu + Live TV, Sling) Recurring subscription; current prices not stated in this guide and should be checked on each provider’s pricing page Whether your address is served and your exact stations are in the chosen plan Viewers who want internet delivery and whose local stations are carried in their area
Antenna plus optional OTA DVR or network tuner Hardware purchase; service features depend on the device, and any ongoing costs are not stated here Device compatibility, current product support, recording needs, and reception Viewers who want to record over-the-air channels

Limits to keep in mind

  • Subscription prices are not stated in this guide. Plan prices and promotions change, so check each provider’s current pricing before comparing costs.
  • No antenna or streaming service can guarantee every station at every address. Each reception map, coverage claim, and lineup page describes an estimate or a general availability statement.
  • Station-specific apps and free streams depend on each broadcaster, and their availability can change.

For most viewers, the sensible first step is the FCC reception lookup for their address, followed by a short, low-cost antenna test. Streaming makes sense if the reception map and the station list point to gaps that an antenna cannot fill.
