Pressing Enter does not run a command by itself. On a POSIX-style system, it completes a line of input so that a program reading the terminal can receive that text. The shell then reads the line, parses it, expands its words, sets up any redirections, and runs whatever the first word names: a built-in, a function, an external program, or a script. Several separate layers handle these steps, and the details change with the terminal mode, the shell, and the application that is running.

The layers involved

People often treat the terminal window, the keyboard, and the shell as one thing. They are separate layers, and each one does a different job when Enter is pressed.

Layer What it does when you press Enter How to see it
Terminal emulator Translates the key press into input for the terminal session. The exact encoding depends on the emulator and, for remote sessions, on the connection. Not directly visible; the encoding is not standardized across emulators.
Terminal line discipline (the terminal device layer) In canonical mode, holds typed characters until a line delimiter arrives, echoes them back to the screen, and handles editing keys such as erase. stty -a lists the icanon, echo, and icrnl settings.
Reading application Calls a read function. In canonical mode the read returns one completed line. Watch a simple program such as cat to see when it receives text.
Shell Tokenizes, parses, expands, redirects, and executes the command text. echo $SHELL shows the login shell path.
Command Runs as a built-in, a function, an external executable, or a script. type cd and type ls show how each name resolves.

What happens, step by step

  1. The emulator sends input for the key. The terminal emulator turns the key press into input for the terminal session. POSIX defines the terminal interface and the shell language, but it does not define one universal keyboard encoding for every emulator, platform, or remote connection.
  2. The line discipline buffers and echoes the text. In canonical mode, the terminal device layer collects characters into a line, shows them on screen, and applies line editing such as erase. Enter supplies the line delimiter. On many Linux systems the Enter key arrives as a carriage return, and the icrnl setting converts it to a newline before the reader sees it. You can check this with stty -a, as described later in this article.
  3. The read returns one line. According to the POSIX terminal interface, a read in canonical mode does not return until a line has been typed or a signal is received, and it returns at most one line per read. The Open Group’s General Terminal Interface chapter defines this behavior.
  4. The shell parses the line. The shell takes the text it has read, breaks it into tokens, parses that structure, and applies word expansions and redirections. It then executes the command.
  5. The command runs. Depending on what the first word names, the shell runs a built-in or function inside its own process, or it starts an external program or script. For a foreground job, the shell may wait for completion and collect the exit status.

The rest of this article expands steps 2 and 4, because those are where most of the confusion comes from.

Canonical and noncanonical input

The key distinction is whether the terminal waits for a complete line before the program sees anything. POSIX describes both modes.

Question Canonical mode Noncanonical mode
When does a read return? After a line delimiter (NL, EOF, or EOL) or a signal As input arrives, subject to the terminal’s minimum-count and timeout settings
Who handles editing keys such as backspace? The terminal line discipline, before the application sees the line The application itself, which receives the keystrokes directly
Typical users Ordinary shell prompts and line-oriented commands Full-screen editors, pagers, and programs that respond to single keystrokes

The POSIX terminal interface specifies that canonical processing is line-oriented and that input can be echoed. Noncanonical input is what lets an application respond to a key before any Enter is pressed. The exact noncanonical behavior depends on the terminal settings the application chooses.

Line editing happens at more than one layer

When you press backspace at a shell prompt, the editing may be handled by the terminal line discipline or by a line-editing library in the shell, depending on the setup. Many interactive shells, including bash, use a library such as GNU Readline for this. Readline reads an edited line and returns it to the caller with its final newline removed. The readline(3) manual page documents this behavior for the library.

This matters because a program that uses its own line editor can behave differently from a plain terminal read. The same Enter key may complete a line in one program and trigger an action in another, because the program decides what counts as input.

What the shell does with the line

The POSIX Shell Command Language describes a general sequence of operations. In summary, the shell reads its input, breaks it into tokens, parses the tokens into commands, applies expansions to the words, performs redirections, executes the command, and optionally waits for it and collects the exit status. The POSIX.1-2024 Shell Command Language specification gives the full order.

Take this line:

echo "$HOME" > paths.txt

The shell first tokenizes the text into the words echo, the quoted $HOME, and the redirection to paths.txt. It expands $HOME to your home directory path. It opens paths.txt for output and sets up the redirection. Then it runs echo, which is a built-in in most shells. The output goes into the file, and no separate program is started for echo itself.

Built-ins, functions, and external programs

Enter does not always lead to a new program. The shell decides what a name refers to before it starts anything.

Built-ins and functions

A built-in is handled by the shell itself. A shell function is also run by the shell. Built-ins are needed for tasks that must affect the shell’s own state. For example, cd changes the current directory of the shell process, so it has to be a built-in. Running type cd in bash reports that it is a shell builtin.

External executables

For an external executable, the shell uses the exec family of functions. A successful exec call replaces the current process image with the new program, and it does not return to the old image. The POSIX.1-2024 exec functions reference defines this behavior. In typical implementations, the shell first creates a child process and calls exec in that child, so the interactive shell keeps running after the command ends. The exact mechanism depends on the shell and operating system.

To check where a name resolves, use type ls or command -v ls. On many systems ls resolves to an executable file such as /usr/bin/ls, but an alias or function may take precedence.

Scripts and non-interactive input

The shell language does not come only from an interactive terminal. A script file or a command passed to the shell can contain the same syntax. In those cases there is no prompt and no Enter key press in the path. The same parsing, expansion, and execution rules still apply.

Why Enter behaves differently in some programs

If Enter appears to do something different in one application, check which of these applies:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • The program uses noncanonical input. Editors, pagers, and some interactive tools read keys as they arrive and may not wait for Enter at all.
  • The program uses its own line editor. A library such as GNU Readline reads and edits the line and returns it without the final newline. Key bindings in that library can differ from the terminal’s own erase and kill settings.
  • Echo is turned off. Password prompts commonly disable echo, so typed characters are not shown. The line is still delivered when Enter completes it.
  • The session is remote. Keys pass through the connection and the remote terminal settings, so the encoding and line handling can differ from a local session. The POSIX interface alone does not describe those layers.

Checking your own terminal settings

stty -a | grep -w -E 'icanon|echo|icrnl'

A line showing icanon means canonical mode is on. A line showing -icrnl means carriage returns are not converted to newlines. Changing these settings affects the current terminal session. To test noncanonical input safely, run stty -icanon in a terminal you can close, and restore the setting with stty icanon. Closing the window also resets the terminal state.

What varies and what is not guaranteed

  • The key encoding produced by a particular emulator, keyboard layout, or remote connection.
  • The default terminal modes, which can be changed by the shell, by an application, or by your configuration.
  • Whether a given line editor is bash’s Readline, zsh’s line editor, or another library.
  • The mechanism the shell uses to start a process, which varies by shell and operating system.
  • The behavior of the POSIX interfaces described here. They define the standard, and implementations may add features or differ in detail.

The POSIX material describes a standard interface and shell language. It does not provide a byte-by-byte trace of the keyboard, the emulator, the kernel device, and the application on every system.
