Meta VR Glasses have a narrower view than Quest 3, and that matters—but it is only one part of the trade-off. Meta lists a nominal 70° horizontal by 66° vertical field of view, alongside a roughly 100 g glasses-shaped device with micro-OLED displays and a separate tethered compute puck. Whether the compromise makes sense depends on what you want from VR: wide peripheral immersion, or a lighter way to watch, work and play.
What Meta’s 70-degree FOV figure actually means
Meta’s developer documentation gives the glasses a nominal straight-ahead field of view of 70° horizontally by 66° vertically. Meta calls that an upper bound: fit, eye position and gaze direction can reduce the area a wearer actually sees. Meta Horizon OS Developers’ device specifications also list a 74°×68° per-eye render extent. That describes the area rendered, not a promise that all of it will be visible.
The same documentation lists a 58°×54° “perceived” p90 simulation target for developer testing. That is a separate testing target—not the official nominal FOV and not a replacement for the 70°×66° specification. The distinction matters because one number describes the nominal view, another the rendered extent, and the simulation target is for development.

By Meta’s published figures, the glasses provide a substantially narrower view than either Quest headset. Their different form factors and display specifications help explain why FOV is not the only comparison worth making.

| Device | Nominal FOV | Display and pixel density | Form factor and input |
|---|---|---|---|
| Meta VR Glasses | 70° horizontal × 66° vertical | Micro-OLED; 37 pixels per degree, per Meta’s 2026 announcement | Glasses connected by optical tether to a compute puck; eye and hand tracking are primary. Touch Plus controllers are optional and sold separately. |
| Meta Quest 3 | 110° horizontal × 96° vertical | LCD; 25 pixels per degree, per Meta’s device comparison | All-in-one headset; Touch Plus controllers included. |
| Meta Quest 3S | 96° horizontal × 90° vertical | LCD; 20 pixels per degree, per Meta’s device comparison | All-in-one headset; Touch Plus controllers included. |
These are Meta’s published specifications, not results from a side-by-side independent test. The company’s device comparison shows the scale of the FOV difference; its 2026 announcement describes the glasses’ display and tethered design.
Why the narrower view may not be the whole story
The glasses trade immersion for a lighter form
Meta says the glasses weigh about 100 g. That figure applies to the glasses themselves: the optical tether and separate puck, which houses compute, battery and storage, are also part of the system. This is not simply a wireless pair of ordinary glasses. The design’s appeal is instead a glasses-shaped device with less weight on the face than a conventional headset, paired with external hardware.

Display clarity and media use are part of the pitch
Meta specifies micro-OLED panels, 37 pixels per degree, Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos, and says the glasses can provide up to three hours of continuous high-resolution media playback. Those are manufacturer claims, not independently verified results. Meta positions the product for private media viewing, sports and entertainment, workspace use, hand-tracked games and existing controller-based games. Its announcement names Disney+, ESPN and IMAX Enhanced among content relationships; availability of particular services or content may vary.

Tom’s Guide’s Mark Spoonauer reported that he was not bothered by the 70° FOV during a 40-minute demo, which included a 3D music performance, a 180-degree basketball clip, a movie environment, virtual typing and a short game. That is one reviewer’s short-session impression. It does not establish long-term comfort or predict how other people will respond. Tom’s Guide’s hands-on report provides that individual context.

Who is most likely to notice the FOV limitation?
The narrow view is a legitimate concern if you value peripheral immersion or play games designed around a broad field of view. The concern can be sharper in practice because Meta says fit and gaze may make the visible area smaller than the nominal figure.
By contrast, someone who prioritizes a lighter-on-the-face device, display sharpness, private media viewing or a portable workspace may consider the compromise differently. The available evidence does not establish how users as a group will feel about the FOV, and a single demo cannot settle that question.

Can you use controllers with Meta VR Glasses?
Eye and hand tracking are the primary input methods, but Meta says Touch Plus controllers are supported as an optional, separately purchased accessory for controller-based games. They do not widen the FOV, and they are not required for the default eye-and-hand interface. Check current compatibility and accessory availability before buying, particularly because the glasses have not yet gone on sale.
When will Meta VR Glasses be available, and how much will they cost?
Meta announced a US price of $1,299.99 and a spring 2027 sale. These are announced price and timing, not confirmation that the product is currently available. Check Meta’s announcement for current availability and regional details as launch approaches.
