Amazon Web Services reportedly changed how utilities can switch some of its data centers to backup power after Entergy Mississippi warned that peak demand could require AWS to reduce its draw from the grid. The change, called Project Falcon, lets a utility prompt a power-source switch without first contacting AWS. The account comes from The Information; its article is subscription-only, so the reported details have not been independently confirmed here.

What AWS reportedly changed

Before Project Falcon, The Information reported, a utility seeking to move an AWS data center from utility power to backup generation had to contact AWS to initiate the change. The new process reportedly lets the utility trigger that switch itself, removing the contact step. The report says backup power includes gas-powered generators.

Amazon told The Information that utilities in multiple regions can remotely prompt its data centers to use backup generation. That describes a change in power source—not utility control over the data center’s computing workloads. The report does not establish that the process applies to every AWS facility, how often it is used, or which generators and fuels are involved at particular sites.

The warning described was about managing peak demand so Entergy Mississippi could preserve service for other customers, not a general power outage. The Information quotes Synergetic CEO Mike Sloan: “Data centers are so giant, they’re pushing the capabilities of what the grid can do and how fast it can do it, so grid operators and utilities are putting special rules on these guys.”

Why a utility would ask a data center to switch power sources

A large data center can place substantial demand on the grid. During periods of high demand, moving its load to on-site backup generation can reduce the facility’s draw on utility supply. Automating the handoff may make that response faster by avoiding a call-and-approval step, though the public reporting does not spell out Project Falcon’s technical design, safeguards, or operating rules.

Amazon told The Information: “We work closely with utilities to support grid reliability while ensuring our customers have the resilient infrastructure they depend on.” Entergy Mississippi told the publication that its data-center customers, including AWS, must install equipment to protect the grid from power-quality problems that can arise from loads of this size.

What is happening with Amazon’s Mississippi projects

Mississippi Today’s June 9, 2026 report described five Amazon buildings operating in Canton, with plans to at least double that presence. It said Ridgeland was in early construction, while Clinton and Vicksburg were at site-preparation or pre-construction stages. Those are project statuses reported on that date, not a confirmation of their status today.

Amazon told Mississippi Today it had worked with Entergy to cover 100% of new-campus energy-infrastructure and upgrade costs. The same report described a $300 million Entergy Mississippi grid-upgrade program over five years, with a goal of reducing outages by 50%. That is a target, not a measured result.

Amazon also said five renewable-energy projects would enable 616 MW of new carbon-free energy in Mississippi—an amount the company compared with the electricity use of 152,000 U.S. homes. That commitment does not mean every data-center load is continuously supplied by renewable power. These project and energy figures are reported by Mississippi Today.

Are Amazon’s data centers raising Mississippi electricity bills?

There is no single independently reconciled answer in the public accounts cited here. Amazon and Entergy say the company pays its share and that new large customers can help cover grid costs; an analysis published by Earthjustice raises concerns about whether confidential contracts and limited public review can expose other customers to costs. These positions address related but different questions: who pays for a particular customer’s infrastructure, how shared grid costs are allocated, and what happens if projected demand does not materialize.

Amazon’s sustainability FAQ says consulting firm E3 studied four Amazon data centers using utility bills, rate agreements, and grid data. The FAQ quotes E3 senior partner Kush Patel saying the analysis showed the data center “had not been subsidized by other customers” and that “They’re paying their fair share.” It also quotes E3 researcher Liz Mettetal: “Data centers can have beneficial impacts on other customers.” These conclusions are relayed in an Amazon-published FAQ, rather than in a full independent study available in the materials cited here.

In an August 27, 2026 release, Entergy said revenue from Amazon’s Mississippi facility helped eliminate an estimated residential bill increase of nearly $5 per month under its Fair Share Plus pledge. That is Entergy’s account of its rate and cost accounting, not an independent analysis of household bills. Entergy chair and CEO Drew Marsh said: “Every new large customer added to the system helps pick up more of the grid maintenance improvement costs that existing customers would otherwise have to bear alone.”

The counterpoint: contract transparency and risk

A May 2026 report by Synapse Energy Economics, published by Earthjustice, argues that confidential contracts and reduced public review can make cost allocation difficult to assess. It warns that other customers could face cost shifting or stranded investments if a large customer fails to arrive or later leaves. The report also recognizes that large loads can help utilities spread fixed costs. Its scenarios identify risks; they do not prove that Amazon’s Mississippi contract has shifted costs to households.

How to assess the competing claims

  • Costs assigned to Amazon: What does the contract require the company to pay, and which grid costs remain shared?
  • Type of bill claim: Is the number an observed bill change, a utility estimate, or a modeled comparison with a scenario in which the data center was absent?
  • Public evidence: Are the contract terms and underlying utility analysis available for independent review?
  • Grid capacity: Can generation and transmission serve the facility during peak periods without compromising reliability for other customers?
  • Backup operations: How often is backup generation used, what fuel does each site burn, and how is that operation regulated?

Amazon’s FAQ also states that U.S. residential electricity prices rose 27% on average from 2020 to 2025; that about 70% of U.S. transmission lines and transformers are more than 25 years old; and that transformer prices have risen 60–80% since 2020, with lead times of up to four years. Those figures are claims in Amazon’s FAQ, not independently checked here. The FAQ further summarizes an E3 analysis as finding Mississippi residents’ bills were expected to be 16% lower than they would have been without the studied data center. That is a company-reported modeled counterfactual, not an uncontested observed statewide bill reduction. The figures and analysis are presented in Amazon Sustainability’s FAQ.

What the public account does not establish

  • The full technical design, safeguards, or geographic scope of Project Falcon.
  • How frequently utilities trigger a switch, the fuel used at each site, or generator-by-generator operating records.
  • The full terms of AWS’s utility contracts or independent verification of the company’s and utility’s bill-impact claims.
  • A definitive, independently reconciled measure of how Amazon’s Mississippi facilities affect household bills.

Those limits matter because backup switching addresses a specific operational question—how a data center can reduce its grid draw during a peak-demand event—while bill effects depend on contracts, infrastructure spending, rate design, and what happens to the grid over time. The reported change is a mechanism for managing power supply, not proof by itself that data centers lower or raise residential bills.
