GitHub is adding AI checks to push protection to catch unstructured credentials, including passwords, before they enter a repository’s history. As of GitHub’s October 7, 2026 announcement, those AI push-time checks were in private preview—not generally available. GitHub’s separate AI-detected secret alerts already existed and had been moved to a new detection model.
What GitHub’s AI secret detection does
GitHub’s AI secret detection looks at code context to identify likely credentials that may not match a recognizable token pattern, such as a password written directly in source code. GitHub says its purpose-built model “reads surrounding code to identify likely credentials, including passwords without a recognizable token format, without generating code or prose.” (GitHub Changelog, October 7, 2026.)
This is a security-detection feature, not a tool for generating or reviewing application code. Its two relevant workflows run at different stages: secret-scanning alerts help identify credentials in repository content, while push protection can stop a push before a supported secret enters repository history.

| Capability | When it runs | What happens | Status as of October 7, 2026 | Cost or eligibility noted by GitHub |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| AI-detected secret alerts | Scans Git content for unstructured credentials such as passwords. | Creates an alert for review; it does not itself block the push. | Existing customers with AI-detected password alerts had been automatically upgraded to GitHub’s new model. | Alerts remain included with GitHub Secret Protection (GHSP) and GitHub Advanced Security (GHAS) at no additional charge. |
| AI checks in push protection | At push time, before credentials enter repository history. | Checks for unstructured credentials and gives contributors an opportunity to remove them before the push. | Private preview; an administrator must enable it, subject to organization or enterprise policies. | Opt-in checks consume GitHub AI Credits. GitHub Team and GitHub Enterprise Cloud customers need paid GHSP or GHAS coverage. |
| Established push protection for supported secrets | During a push. | Blocks a push containing a supported secret, subject to the available bypass process. | Documented push-protection behavior; distinct from the newer AI-based unstructured-secret preview. | Availability depends on plan and repository context. |
GitHub’s announcement also described AI-based secret checks in the Copilot /security-review command as forthcoming in private preview. That is separate from both repository alerts and AI checks in push protection.

Who can use the features, and what they cover
Availability depends on the repository’s visibility, the GitHub plan, and whether an organization administrator has enabled the relevant capability. GitHub’s documentation distinguishes features available for public repositories from additional capabilities associated with GitHub Secret Protection on GitHub Team and GitHub Enterprise Cloud. Check the plan and repository’s settings rather than assuming every account has the same coverage. (GitHub Docs: Secret scanning features.)
GitHub’s July 2024 public-beta announcement described AI password detection for Git content, with findings in a separate tab from regular secret-scanning alerts. At that time, it did not detect passwords in non-Git content such as issues or pull requests, and it was not included in push protection. That launch description is historical: the October 2026 announcement introduced the newer AI push-protection preview. (GitHub’s July 2024 announcement; October 2026 Changelog.)

- POWERFUL SECURITY KEY: The YubiKey 5C NFC is the most versatile physical passkey, protecting your digital life from phishing attacks. It ensures only you can access your accounts
- WORKS WITH 1000+ ACCOUNTS: Compatible with popular accounts like Google, Microsoft, and Apple. A single YubiKey 5C NFC secures 100+ of your favorite accounts, including email, password managers, and more
- FAST & CONVENIENT LOGIN: Plug in your YubiKey 5C NFC via USB and tap it, or tap it against your phone (NFC), to authenticate. No batteries, no internet connection, and no extra fees required
- MOST SECURE PASSKEY: Supports FIDO2/WebAuthn, FIDO U2F, Yubico OTP, OATH-TOTP/HOTP, Smart card (PIV), and OpenPGP. That means it’s versatile, working almost anywhere you need it
- PRIMARY & SPARE KEYS: Just like having a spare house key, we recommend buying two YubiKeys - one for daily use and one as a spare. That way you’ll never get locked out of your accounts
The October announcement also described a planned public-preview destination for AI-detected alerts in GitHub Enterprise Server 3.23. It did not include AI push protection or the Copilot security-review command in that Server release. This is a planned destination, not confirmation that the feature is already available on every Enterprise Server installation.

- Confirm eligibility. For GitHub Team or GitHub Enterprise Cloud, verify that the organization has paid GHSP or GHAS coverage and that its policies permit the feature. The AI push-protection checks were in private preview as of October 7, 2026.
- Ask an administrator to enable it. GitHub says an administrator must enable the preview, subject to organization or enterprise policies. The announcement does not establish one universal settings path for every account configuration.
- Push changes as usual. If the check identifies an unstructured credential, remove it before pushing so it does not enter repository history.
- Review any resulting alert or block. A detection can be a test value or false positive; inspect the finding and the code context before deciding what to do.
For supported secrets, GitHub’s command-line push protection blocks the push and can show up to five detected secrets at a time. A contributor can remove the secret or use the provided bypass path where permitted. If a push scan times out, GitHub says it will scan the commits after the push, so a timeout is not evidence that the commits were cleared. (GitHub Docs: Pushing a branch protected by push protection.)

Review alerts carefully and respond to exposed credentials
AI-detected secrets appear in GitHub’s generic alerts list. GitHub warns that generic alerts can have higher false-positive rates than other alert types and may include secrets used in tests. An alert is a lead to investigate, not proof by itself that a credential is active or exploitable.
- Generic alerts are capped at 5,000 per repository, counting open and closed alerts.
- Generic patterns show up to the first five detected locations; an AI-detected secret alert shows the first detected location.
- Generic alerts are excluded from Security overview summary views.
If a real credential was exposed, treat it as compromised: revoke or rotate it promptly and remove it from repository history where appropriate. Blocking a later push does not invalidate a credential that has already been exposed. (GitHub Docs: Managing alerts from secret scanning; GitHub Docs: Push protection.)

AI Credits and billing for the preview
GitHub says existing AI-detected alerts remain included with GHSP and GHAS at no additional charge. The new opt-in AI checks in push protection consume AI Credits. In most cases, GitHub attributes usage to the organization that owns the repository; the October announcement describes a special attribution case for user-namespace repositories belonging to enterprise-managed users. Organizations can configure SKU-level budgets, but GitHub warns that budget alerts alone do not stop usage. (GitHub Changelog, October 7, 2026.)
GitHub’s March 4, 2025 announcement listed GitHub Secret Protection at $19 per month per active committer for GitHub Team customers beginning April 1, 2025. That is a dated price, not a current quote; check GitHub’s current plan and pricing details before budgeting. (GitHub’s March 2025 announcement.)

Optional pre-commit scanning through AI coding agents
GitHub also documents a separate remote MCP server option for scanning from compatible AI coding-agent clients, including Visual Studio Code, JetBrains, Claude Code, Cursor, and Windsurf. A prompt such as “Scan my current changes for exposed secrets” can be used as a pre-commit check. These findings are ephemeral: they do not become persisted GitHub alerts, so this workflow is an extra check rather than a replacement for repository secret scanning. (GitHub Docs: Using secret scanning with AI agents.)
