Spotifast is an independent Spotify desktop client for Linux, macOS, and Windows. The project says it typically uses 100–250 MB of memory, compared with 600 MB to more than 1 GB for Spotify’s desktop app—but those are project-published typical figures, not results from a controlled benchmark. Your actual memory use and savings may differ.
How much RAM can Spotifast save?
Spotifast’s official overview puts its typical memory use at 100–250 MB and Spotify’s desktop app at 600 MB to over 1 GB. On those figures, Spotifast can use substantially less memory, but they do not establish a guaranteed fivefold reduction for every computer or listening session. The project does not provide a standardized test machine, operating system, workload, or measurement method for the comparison, and the figures are not presented as an independent benchmark. Spotifast’s overview is the source for both estimates.
Memory use varies with the system and what the app is doing. Treat the numbers as a rough project-reported comparison, not a promise that Spotifast will free a specific amount of RAM on your device.
What Spotifast is and how it plays music
Spotifast is a native desktop client project built with Rust and an egui interface; it uses librespot for playback. Its feature list includes library browsing and search, local playback, Spotify Connect, themes, desktop controls, a Winamp mini player, and MilkDrop visuals. Feature availability can vary by platform. The project describes the app as independent and not affiliated with or endorsed by Spotify AB. What you need to listen
A Spotify Premium account
Playback through Spotifast requires Spotify Premium. A Free account can browse and search, but it cannot play tracks through the app. This requirement also applies when using Spotifast to control another device.
Sign-in and local playback setup
Spotifast’s documented setup uses Spotify’s own website for sign-in. The project says it does not receive your Spotify password. To play on the computer, sign in through the browser and then enable local playback as a separate step; the computer then appears as a Spotify Connect device. Audio quality and feature limitations
The project describes playback as supporting up to 320 kbps. Spotify Lossless is not available in Spotifast. If you depend on Lossless audio, video podcasts, or Spotify social features, check the current feature limitations before switching; the official overview describes the project’s supported features and limitations.

Platforms and installation
Spotifast is available for Linux, macOS, and Windows. The official download page reports version 0.12.0 at the time documented here, but releases can change. Check the download page for the current version and platform-specific options rather than relying on version-specific installation instructions.

Privacy and compatibility considerations
The project says Spotifast does not receive your Spotify password and that its author receives nothing about users or their app use. Its privacy page also describes a conditional lyrics lookup: when the lyrics panel is open and Spotify has no lyrics for the current song, Spotifast sends the artist, title, album, and duration to lrclib.net. The privacy page identifies itself as covering app version 0.8.0 and later, so consult the current privacy policy for the latest details.
Because Spotifast is an unofficial, independent client, changes on Spotify’s side can temporarily disrupt compatibility until the app is updated. The project does not guarantee that compatibility will continue indefinitely.

Who should consider Spotifast?
- Consider it if you want a Spotify desktop alternative, use a supported operating system, and have Premium for playback.
- Check carefully first if you need Spotify Lossless, video podcasts, or social features, or if you rely on long-term compatibility with Spotify’s service.
- Keep expectations realistic about RAM: the project’s figures suggest lower typical memory use, but they are not a controlled comparison or a guaranteed saving on your system.
