Nokia plans to cut up to 253 jobs in Finland, according to Yle’s 8 October 2026 report citing Helsingin Sanomat. The figure is a planned maximum ahead of negotiations, not a final number of redundancies. The reported changes affect employees in Espoo, Tampere and Oulu, with negotiations scheduled to begin on 12 October.

How many jobs does Nokia plan to cut in Finland?

The reported maximum is 253. Yle attributed that figure to Helsingin Sanomat; it is not a confirmed final count. Nokia communications chief Maria Vaismaa confirmed to Yle by email that the company had commenced the change-negotiation process. Yle reported that Nokia had informed employees but had not issued a press release about this plan.

Which locations are affected, and when do negotiations begin?

The reported plan covers employees in Espoo, Tampere and Oulu. Negotiations with employee representatives are scheduled to begin on 12 October 2026, according to Yle’s account. The negotiation process can affect the eventual number of job losses, so the reported maximum should not be treated as the outcome.

What reasons have been reported?

Yle, relaying Helsingin Sanomat’s reporting, said the rationale includes improving competitiveness and enabling investment in areas expected to drive future growth. Swedish-language Yle reporting identified defence, artificial intelligence and data centres as growth opportunities cited in connection with Nokia in Finland. These are reported explanations, not a verbatim statement from Nokia about the new plan; Yle did not publish the exact words of Vaismaa’s email.

How does this fit Nokia’s wider restructuring?

Nokia’s half-year report, published on 23 July 2026, describes additional restructuring programs, primarily in Europe, expected to result in EUR 200 million in restructuring charges in 2026. The filing also describes a separate program launched in October 2023, targeting EUR 800 million to EUR 1.2 billion in gross cost savings by the end of 2026. The filing provides company-wide context but does not establish that the newly reported Finland plan belongs wholly to either program.

How is this different from Nokia’s earlier Finland job cuts?

Nokia completed a separate Finland restructuring round earlier in 2026. Eurofound’s European Restructuring Monitor says the estimate in that round fell from a maximum of 156 to 121 during negotiations, and Nokia confirmed 107 final job losses after talks concluded on 9 April. Those 107 losses are not part of the newly reported maximum of 253.
