Don’t treat rankings or traffic during an active Google core update rollout as the final result. Confirm the rollout has ended on Google’s Search Status Dashboard, then wait at least one full week before analyzing Search Console data. That is Google’s recommended window—not a guarantee that every site’s performance has stabilized.

Why early rollout readings can mislead

A core update can take time to roll out. During that period, rankings may move as Google makes changes across its systems. Google described its March 2024 core update as complex and said that particular rollout could take up to a month; that estimate applied to that update, not to core updates generally. Google’s March 2024 announcement also said it would mark completion on the Status Dashboard.

Core updates are broad changes, not penalties aimed at a particular site or page. Search results also change as the web and user expectations change, so a movement that happens during an update is not, by itself, proof that the update caused it. Google says it makes Search changes thousands of times per year, while sharing only changes it considers notable; an update absent from the Dashboard is not evidence that Search did not change. Google’s Q&A on Search updates explains that disclosure policy.

When is a Google core update finished?

Check the Google Search Status Dashboard for the relevant ranking update and its status. Record its announced start and completion dates. The Dashboard reports notable system updates; it does not diagnose an individual site. Google notes that an issue limited to a small number of sites or searchers may not appear there.

Use the Dashboard for rollout dates and Search Console for your site’s performance. Google’s Dashboard introduction provides background on the service.

How long should you wait, and what dates should you compare?

Google recommends waiting at least one full week after a core update completes before analyzing your site in Search Console. Once that week has passed, compare it with the week before the rollout began. Record the date ranges explicitly so you do not accidentally compare the active rollout with a different period.

This is a practical comparison method, not a measured universal stabilization interval. It does not establish that every site’s data has settled after a week. Google’s current core update guidance sets out the recommended timing.

How to assess a change in Search Console

  1. Set the comparison periods. Use the week before the rollout started as the baseline and a comparable week beginning at least one full week after completion as the post-update period.
  2. Look beyond the sitewide total. Review your leading pages and queries to see where changes are concentrated.
  3. Separate search types when relevant. Compare Web Search with Images, Video, or News as appropriate; an aggregate view can conceal a change on one surface.
  4. Size the movement before deciding what to do. Google illustrates a shift in average position from 2 to 4 as small, and from 4 to 29 as large. These are examples, not universal thresholds or predictions of impact.

Google advises against drastic changes for a small shift. A large decline calls for a deeper assessment. Its guidance on core updates describes these examples and recommendations.

Did the update cause your traffic drop?

Timing can make an update worth investigating, but timing alone does not prove causation. Google’s traffic-drop guidance lists several possible explanations, including algorithmic changes, technical problems, security issues, and data anomalies. Check for those possibilities alongside the update dates rather than assuming every decline is an update effect. Google’s traffic-drop guide explains how to investigate them.

What to do after a sustained decline

If the decline is broad and sustained, assess the site overall for helpful, reliable, people-first content rather than making abrupt changes in response to a short-term fluctuation. Google says improvements may be reflected in results within days, while broader reassessment can take several months; it does not guarantee a noticeable ranking impact from changes. That variable improvement period is separate from the announced rollout window.
