Upgrade selected favorites, not your whole shelf. Ultra HD Blu-ray is worth buying when a specific film has a strong 4K edition and you have, or are prepared to add, a 4K HDR display and an Ultra HD Blu-ray player. A standard Blu-ray player cannot play Ultra HD discs, but an Ultra HD player plays your existing Blu-rays, so you can upgrade one title at a time without losing anything you already own.
Are Ultra HD Blu-ray players and discs backwards compatible?
Compatibility works in one direction only, and it matters which direction you are thinking about.
- Ultra HD discs do not play in older players. The Blu-ray Disc Association’s compatibility guidance states: “Ultra HD Blu-ray Discs cannot be played in a standard Blu-ray Disc player.” A 4K disc needs an Ultra HD Blu-ray player.
- Ultra HD players play your existing discs. The association’s FAQ states: “Ultra HD Blu-ray players play all current Blu-ray Disc content.” The association also says most of these players play DVDs.
In practice, buying one Ultra HD player does not strand your current library. You keep watching standard Blu-rays and DVDs on the same machine and add 4K discs as you buy them.

What Ultra HD Blu-ray adds
The format’s headline specification is a maximum resolution of 3840 x 2160 pixels, according to the Blu-ray Disc Association’s Ultra HD Benefits page. That is four times the pixel count of 1920 x 1080 Full HD. Pixel count describes what the format can carry, not how good a particular film looks. The transfer and mastering of each release decide that, which is why title-by-title checking matters.
#1 Best Overall
- See the unrivalled visual clarity of 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray
- Play almost any disc and file format including DVDs
- Stunning picture with 4K upscaling up to 60p
- Easy set-up with included HDMI cable
- Listen to music from multiple formats
The same page lists three further capabilities:
- High dynamic range (HDR) and wider color. These are format features. You only see them if your display supports them.
- Higher frame rates. The association’s FAQ gives a maximum of 60 fps.
- Immersive and multichannel audio. Covered in the next section.
Disc capacity and maximum video rate
The Ultra HD Benefits page gives both capacity and the maximum video rate for each disc type. These are ceilings the format allows, not bitrates every release will reach.
| Disc type | Capacity | Stated maximum video rate |
|---|---|---|
| Dual-layer Ultra HD disc | 66 GB | 108 Mbps |
| Triple-layer Ultra HD disc | 100 GB | 128 Mbps |
Audio: what the format allows and what a disc may contain
The association’s FAQ states that Ultra HD Blu-ray supports immersive formats such as Dolby Atmos and DTS:X, and up to 7.1 channels of uncompressed surround sound. These are format capabilities. Each release chooses its own soundtrack, so a disc with 4K video may still carry only a standard lossy mix. Check the audio listing for each title, and make sure your receiver or soundbar can decode the formats you want.

What you need before upgrading
- A 4K display with HDR support. Confirm this in your TV’s specification sheet, not just its marketing name.
- An Ultra HD Blu-ray player. A standard Blu-ray player will not read the discs.
- An audio system, if you want Atmos, DTS:X or multichannel uncompressed sound.
- Connection details checked against your manuals. The sources behind this guide do not specify the exact HDMI standard you need, so check your TV’s and receiver’s documentation before buying.
If your display lacks full support, the association says Ultra HD players can down-convert the picture and convert HDR to SDR. The disc will still play, but you will not see the full 4K HDR presentation.
Does my Philips Blu-ray player support 4K UHD discs?
Support depends on the exact model, not the brand. Philips publishes a supported-disc list for each model, and that list cannot be applied to other Philips players. The support page for the BDP2501/F7 is one example of such a list.

- If you are unsure of the model, compare the label and its manual before buying a disc.
Deciding title by title
An Ultra HD release is a different product from the Blu-ray you already own, so compare them on the same points before you spend money. The format guarantees the capability; each edition has to prove the rest.
| What to compare | What the format provides | What to verify for each title |
|---|---|---|
| Resolution and source | Up to 3840 x 2160 pixels | Whether the 4K edition uses a new or restored transfer, or the same source as your Blu-ray (not stated in the format specification) |
| HDR and color | HDR and wider color supported | Whether the release includes HDR, and whether your display handles it |
| Audio | Atmos, DTS:X and up to 7.1 uncompressed channels | Which soundtracks the disc actually carries, and whether your sound system decodes them |
| Playback | Ultra HD players play existing Blu-rays | Whether you already own a 4K player, or need to buy one |
| Edition value | Not defined by the format | Extras, packaging, whether a Blu-ray copy is included, and whether your current copy already satisfies you |
Buy an Ultra HD edition when
- The release is a true 4K edition of a film you watch often.
- You have a 4K HDR display and an Ultra HD player, or are buying both.
- The soundtracks and extras on the 4K disc match or improve on your current copy.
Keep the Blu-ray when
- You have no 4K HDR display, so the 4K picture would not reach your screen.
- You rarely rewatch the film, or your current copy already looks and sounds the way you want.
- The Ultra HD listing does not state the features you care about, such as HDR or the audio formats.
Prices, availability and which titles have 4K releases change over time, so check current listings for each disc. The format specifications described above come from the Blu-ray Disc Association and do not vary by title.
