Nintendo Switch 2 led U.S. console sales by both units and dollar sales in August 2026 and year to date through August, even as total U.S. video game hardware spending fell 11% year over year to $2.5 billion. Those figures describe different things: a console can lead its category while the category as a whole contracts. Available figures do not establish that August game-content spending grew or was healthier than hardware.
Is the Switch 2 the best-selling console in 2026?
According to Circana figures reported by Final Weapon, Switch 2 was the top-selling console in the United States by both units and dollar sales in August 2026 and cumulatively through August. This is a U.S. ranking, not a claim about worldwide sales or the full calendar year.

That leadership does not mean the console market is expanding. Circana figures reported by Final Weapon put August U.S. hardware spending at $302 million, down 3% from August 2025. Spending from January through August was $2.5 billion, down 11% year over year. August hardware unit sales were 559,000, down 15% year over year.
Why is video game hardware spending down?
Fewer systems sold, alongside higher average prices
The August figures show fewer consoles sold but a higher average hardware price. The reported average U.S. hardware price was $541 in August 2026, compared with the previous August record of $476 in August 2025. The unit decline and price increase help explain why spending and unit sales do not move in lockstep; they do not, by themselves, establish the cause of the overall market decline.

Price is a factor for buyers, not a proven explanation for the decline
In Nintendo’s published English translation of its May 11, 2026 FY2026 results Q&A, president and representative director Shuntaro Furukawa said of the company’s hardware price revision: “we recognize that this raises the barrier for entry to a certain extent for people deciding whether to make a purchase.” Nintendo cited rising memory and component costs and other market conditions in discussing the revision. The statement concerns Nintendo’s pricing and buyer access; it does not show that price alone caused the U.S. hardware-spending decline.
Are game sales doing better than console sales?
The available August figures establish a decline in hardware spending, but they do not provide an exact U.S. August content-spending figure or year-over-year growth rate. It would therefore be unsupported to say that game spending grew, outperformed hardware in August, or offset the hardware decline.

There is a separate, company-wide measure of Nintendo’s digital business: in the fiscal year ended March 31, 2026, Nintendo reported digital sales of 407.6 billion yen, up 25.0% year over year. Digital sales represented 54.6% of dedicated-platform software sales. Nintendo’s category includes downloadable packaged games, download-only software, add-on content, Nintendo Switch Online, and related items; bundled software revenue is classified as hardware revenue. These figures describe Nintendo’s fiscal-year business, not U.S. August game spending.

That is an early-year forecast for all three categories combined, not a final result or an August content comparison.

How many Switch 2 systems has Nintendo sold?
Nintendo reported 19.86 million Switch 2 hardware units sold in its fiscal year ended March 31, 2026, alongside 48.71 million Switch 2 software units. Nintendo labels these as sell-in results: sales by the Nintendo group to outside entities, including partners and direct website sales. They are not the same measure as Circana’s U.S. monthly market tracking, and the geography and reporting periods differ.
Nintendo president Shuntaro Furukawa said in the company’s published Q&A translation: “The availability of software that people want to play is a key factor supporting the transition to Nintendo Switch 2.” That is Nintendo’s explanation of a factor supporting adoption, rather than a quantified estimate of how much software contributed to sales.
Quick Recap
