You can sometimes clear a forgotten Samsung Galaxy lock without losing data, but only in one narrow case. Samsung documents a previous-lock recovery route on supported models running One UI 6.1 or later. It works only if you changed the screen lock recently and still remember the PIN, password, or pattern you used before. If that route is not offered, or you cannot recall the old credential, Samsung’s documented ways of clearing the lock also erase the phone’s data. Remote unlocking through SmartThings Find is not a current option.
Start with the check that can save your data
Before trying anything else, answer two questions: did you change the screen lock within the last 72 hours, and do you remember the lock you used before that change? Samsung India’s support page states that after you change a screen lock PIN, password, or pattern, the previous screen-lock data is stored for 72 hours and then deleted. The same page describes the recovery feature as usable once per lock type. (Samsung India, updated 10 July 2026.) If both answers are yes, the rest of this section applies to you. If either answer is no, skip to the reset comparison.
What you need for previous-lock recovery
- A Galaxy model that supports the feature. Samsung’s guidance names One UI 6.1 or later. Eligibility depends on the device and software version, so check your One UI version in the phone’s software information before you rely on this route.
- The lock change happened within the 72-hour window described above.
- You know the exact previous PIN, password, or pattern.
- The lock screen shows the “Forgot PIN/Password/Pattern” prompt. Samsung says this prompt appears after five or more failed unlock attempts.
Steps to replace the lock without a reset
- On the locked screen, enter your current credential. If it is rejected, keep entering it only as far as you need to reach the recovery prompt. Samsung says the option appears after five or more failed attempts, so avoid repeated guessing.
- When the “Forgot PIN/Password/Pattern” option appears, tap it. Exact wording can vary by model and software.
- Enter the previous PIN, password, or pattern. Samsung says this recovery flow allows three incorrect tries. After the third incorrect entry, no more attempts are permitted, so type carefully and do not experiment.
- If the previous credential is accepted, set a new screen lock and confirm it. Your photos, messages, and other local files remain on the phone.
If the recovery option does not appear
Most failed recoveries come down to one of four causes. Work through them in order.

- The device or software is not eligible. The feature requires supported models on One UI 6.1 or later.
- More than 72 hours have passed since the lock was changed, so the previous credential has been deleted.
- You do not remember the previous credential. The recovery flow requires it, and you have only three tries.
- The region’s instructions differ. Samsung UK’s support page, updated 24 April 2026, states that remote unlocking through SmartThings Find is no longer possible. (Samsung UK.) Older articles that describe remote unlock steps should not be followed as current guidance.
Smart Lock and Extend Unlock do not solve a lockout. Samsung India describes them as conditions you configure in advance, which apply only when the phone is in its trusted situation. They cannot reveal or reset a credential you have forgotten once the phone is locked.

Compare the reset options
When previous-lock recovery is not available, the remaining options erase device data. The table shows what each route requires and what Samsung says about it.

Before you reset
A reset is irreversible for data stored only on the phone, so confirm the following first.

- Check whether photos, messages, and contacts already sync to an account you can open from another device. Samsung’s reset guidance advises backing up personal data first, but a locked phone may not allow a manual backup.
- Locate the Google account credentials used on the phone. Factory Reset Protection can ask for them after a reset.
- Locate your Samsung account password. Samsung’s reset guidance says it may be needed.
- Accept that anything stored only on the device will be lost.
Where to get help
If the recovery prompt is missing, your account cannot be verified, or a reset does not complete, contact Samsung support or an authorized Samsung service center. Both can check your device and account status with you. Third-party services that promise to bypass a Samsung lock are not part of Samsung’s guidance, and this article does not recommend them.
