No. None of the manufacturer or government cleaning guidance we checked endorses vinegar for solar panels, so it should not be your default cleaner. The safe baseline in that guidance is plain water and a soft, non-abrasive tool, used only in the way your panel manufacturer allows. Vinegar becomes an option only if the maker of your exact panels explicitly approves it in writing.

Why vinegar is not a safe default

Solar panel manufacturers do not agree on cleaning details. Some accept a standard garden hose, some require de-ionized or treated water, and some ask owners to avoid any cleaning agent at all. Because of that variation, a method that one maker allows cannot be assumed for every array. Vinegar is not on the approved list of any source covered here, and several sources actively warn against cleaning agents in general.

Victoria’s consumer guidance from Solar Victoria puts the principle simply: “They should not use harsh soap or chemicals – usually water is enough.” The page does not display a publication date, so read it as current advice rather than a dated statistic. The same principle appears in the LG and PREFA instructions, which are discussed below.

Warranty terms are the other reason to be careful. PREFA states that some prohibited cleaning practices can void its warranty. Before using any product on a panel, check the warranty document that came with your system, because it is the document that decides whether a cleaning method is acceptable for your equipment.

What each source says

The sources below are not interchangeable. Two are Australian government or state pages, one is a North American manufacturer’s support guidance, and the others are manufacturer instructions for specific product lines. Read the row that matches your own panel brand and location.

Source and scope Water Cleaning agents Tools Notes
Solar Victoria consumer guidance (Victoria, Australia) Usually water is enough; gentle hosing in appropriate circumstances Harsh soap or chemicals should not be used Long-handled soft-bristled broom for debris reachable from the ground, such as at a single-storey house Professional service for very dirty or hard-to-reach panels; check warranty terms for cleaning work
Australian Government energy department (national guidance) Not stated Not stated Not stated Consult system documentation or an installer for a maintenance schedule; cleaning may be needed in dusty conditions; a qualified person should clean panels to avoid damage and ensure safety
Canadian Solar customer support (North America) Water, applied during a cool part of the day Not stated in the summary; its detailed advice covers water-quality and pH considerations Non-abrasive implement such as a sponge Modules with sufficient tilt may not require cleaning; do not rub dry dirt
LG solar blog (United States) De-ionized water is generally sufficient for a do-it-yourselfer; tap water is advised against Cleaning agents are advised against Non-abrasive brush; abrasive brushes are advised against LG strongly discourages owners from cleaning their own arrays because of potential dangers
PREFA PREFALZ instructions (UK site, for this product line) Treated water Harsh cleaners are warned against Soft cloth or sponge; dry scraping, high-pressure cleaning, and abrasive or aggressive materials are warned against Some prohibited practices can void warranty
REC quick guide to cleaning (older PDF hosted by PV.de) Standard garden hose at domestic pressure is permitted Not stated Pressure or steam cleaners and high-pressure hoses are prohibited Manufacturer-specific guidance from an older document; not a universal standard

Each source is named with its own geography or product line, which is why the table does not produce a single universal recipe. Where a manufacturer’s instructions conflict with a government page, follow the manufacturer’s documentation for your own panels and treat the government page as the general safety baseline.

Before you clean: a checklist

  1. Find your manual and warranty. Look for the cleaning or maintenance section of the module documentation that came with your system. If it does not mention cleaning, contact the manufacturer’s support team before using any product on the panels. Canadian Solar’s support page is at https://www.canadiansolar.com/na/customer/customersupport/.
  2. Confirm the maintenance schedule. The Australian Government energy department advises consulting system documentation or an installer for the appropriate schedule. Its guidance is at https://www.energy.gov.au/solar/use-your-solar-system/look-after-your-solar-system.
  3. Decide whether cleaning is needed. Check the tilt and the local dust conditions before doing anything. Panels with sufficient tilt may not need cleaning at all.
  4. Choose the water the manual permits. Options include de-ionized water (LG), treated water (PREFA), or a garden hose at domestic pressure (REC). Do not substitute a different water type than your manual names.
  5. Use only a soft implement. A soft sponge, a soft cloth, or a long-handled soft-bristled broom for panels you can reach from the ground are the tools the sources describe. Avoid abrasive brushes and anything that scrapes dry dirt.
  6. Clean at a cool time of day. Canadian Solar advises washing during a cool part of the day rather than in direct heat.
  7. Stop if the panel is out of reach. If you would need a ladder or roof access, do not continue. Move to a qualified service instead.

When rain may be enough

Panels mounted at a steep angle often shed ordinary dust and debris when it rains, so they may need no help at all. Flat installations and dusty locations are more likely to need cleaning, and the Australian Government guidance notes that dusty conditions can make cleaning necessary. Cleaning will not automatically raise output, and none of the sources cited here quantify a specific energy gain from it. Treat cleaning as a maintenance decision based on visible soiling and your manufacturer’s instructions, not as a guaranteed performance boost.

Access is the biggest safety risk

A long-handled broom, a hose, or a sponge on a pole does not make a roof safe to work on. Solar Victoria advises keeping your feet on the ground and limiting cleaning to panels you can reach that way. Anything that requires climbing onto a roof, standing on panels, or working near electrical components should be handled by a qualified person. LG strongly discourages owners from cleaning their own arrays because of the potential dangers involved.

When to call a professional

  • Panels are hard to reach from the ground or require roof access.
  • Soiling is heavy, caked, or hard to remove with water and a soft tool.
  • The manual is unclear, missing, or does not name a permitted cleaning method.
  • You are unsure whether a cleaning method would affect your warranty.

Solar Victoria’s guidance calls for a professional service for very dirty or hard-to-reach panels, and the Australian Government guidance recommends a qualified person for cleaning in order to avoid damage and ensure safety.
