Neither metal is better for every phone. Aluminum helps a manufacturer spread heat through a frame and build in cooling parts, and titanium has a strong strength-to-weight case. But the frame is only one part of how a phone behaves. Its geometry, internal supports, glass, cooling layout, battery, and repair design all shape the result. The fair comparison is between complete models, not between the metal names on their spec sheets.
Start with the metal label, which can hide a mix of materials
A phone described as “titanium” may not be titanium throughout. Apple’s 2023 announcement of the iPhone 15 Pro describes titanium bands wrapped around a substructure made from 100 percent recycled aluminum. Apple said the aluminum frame helps with thermal dissipation, so the design combines the two metals rather than choosing one. Apple’s iPhone 15 Pro announcement is the primary source for that construction.
The practical lesson is to read the construction for the specific model before deciding that one metal is the whole story.
Heat: aluminum’s value depends on the whole cooling design
Aluminum is useful for heat because it can move heat across a large structure. Apple’s 2025 announcement of the iPhone 17 Pro goes further. It attributes heat movement and distribution to a brushed aluminum unibody and an Apple-designed vapor chamber. Apple said of the design: “The new brushed aluminum unibody design is crafted with a lightweight aerospace-grade 7000-series aluminum alloy to deliver the best-ever thermal performance in an iPhone.” That is Apple’s own performance claim for its 2025 phone, and it describes an integrated system rather than a property of aluminum alone. Apple’s iPhone 17 Pro announcement contains the wording.

A titanium label does not tell you how a phone will cool. Internal layers, the placement of the chip and battery, and the cooling architecture matter as much as the outer metal. Aluminum phones also do not automatically run cooler. The useful evidence is a sustained-use test of the specific model, which Apple’s announcements do not provide.
Strength and weight: titanium’s advantage is a ratio
Apple cited titanium’s strength-to-weight ratio when it introduced the iPhone 15 Pro. That is a claim about how much strength the metal delivers per unit of mass. It is not a statement about the whole phone. A handset’s total weight includes its screen, battery, cameras, and internal structure, so a lighter-for-its-strength frame does not guarantee a lighter phone.

Apple also described the iPhone 15 Pro as the lightest Pro lineup at launch. That is a comparison within Apple’s own lineup, not a controlled test of one metal against another. Apple’s published materials do not include a same-design measurement of aluminum against titanium, so no percentage advantage in weight or durability should be attributed to either metal. Treat any claim of drop resistance based on frame material as unproven unless a specific test supports it.
Why published weights cannot settle the question
Apple lists the weights of its current-generation models on its support pages. These are useful reference points, but the two models below differ in size and configuration, so the gap cannot be assigned to the frame metal.

Both figures are whole-device weights from Apple’s 2024 pages. A 29 g difference between these two models reflects everything that differs between them, not the frame metal alone. Weight comparisons only answer the metal question when two phones share the same size, screen, battery, and internal layout, which is rare in practice.
Construction: outer band or full unibody
Apple uses two different frame approaches across these models, and they change how the metal is used.

Apple has also called the iPhone 15 Pro’s titanium design “a state-of-the-art titanium design” in promotional language from Greg Joswiak, its senior vice president of Worldwide Marketing. That is a description of the design, not a test result.

Repairability depends on the model
Apple said of the iPhone 15 Pro: “The aluminum frame helps with thermal dissipation and allows the back glass to be easily replaced.” This applies to the iPhone 15 Pro’s combined design, where the aluminum substructure supports the back glass. It does not establish that aluminum frames are easier to repair than titanium frames in general. Before recommending a phone on repairability, check the model’s own repair documentation and parts availability.

How to decide between two phones
- Open the manufacturer’s spec page for the exact model and note its frame construction, not just its metal label.
- Compare the whole-device weight and dimensions. If the sizes differ, do not attribute the weight gap to the metal.
- Look for the cooling design, such as a vapor chamber or internal layers, and then for independent sustained-use tests of that exact model.
- Treat strength-to-weight language as the manufacturer’s claim, and do not read it as a drop-resistance guarantee.
- Check the model’s repair documentation and parts availability for the repairs you are most likely to need.
- Confirm the current price and availability at the time you buy, since Apple’s pages and retailer offers change.
Apple’s specifications and announcements cited here describe 2023, 2024, and 2025 models. Newer models may change construction and weight, so check the current spec page before buying.
