A 4K movie has no single file size, so a 2 TB drive has no single movie count. For a two-hour film, the bitrate ranges in the current ETSI/3GPP technical report put a nominal 2 TB drive (2,000 decimal GB) at roughly 89 to 278 films, depending on codec and bitrate. With a 10% free-space margin, the range falls to roughly 80 to 250. That margin is a planning assumption, not a published standard. The sections below show how those numbers are built, where they break down, and how to replace them with the actual sizes of your own files.
Estimated 4K film counts on a 2 TB drive
The table uses two-hour runtimes and the typical bitrate ranges published for 4K UHD streaming and broadcast video: 5 to 25 Mbps overall, 8 to 16 Mbps for HEVC, and 15 to 25 Mbps for AVC, according to ETSI TR 126 925 V19.0.0 (2026-01). Counts are rounded to the nearest whole film. The reserve column subtracts 10% from 2,000 GB, leaving 1,800 GB.
| Scenario | Video bitrate | Data per two-hour film | Films on 2,000 GB | Films on 1,800 GB (10% reserve) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 4K HEVC, low end | 8 Mbps | 7.2 GB | about 278 | about 250 |
| 4K HEVC, high end | 16 Mbps | 14.4 GB | about 139 | about 125 |
| 4K AVC, low end | 15 Mbps | 13.5 GB | about 148 | about 133 |
| 4K AVC, high end | 25 Mbps | 22.5 GB | about 89 | about 80 |
These figures cover the video stream only. Audio tracks, subtitles, menus, and extras add data, and the table does not account for them. It also does not establish that any real file will match these sizes exactly.
What changes the file size
Runtime
At the same bitrate, file size scales linearly with length. A three-hour film at 16 Mbps is about 21.6 GB, which is 50% more than the 14.4 GB two-hour film at the same rate. Two-hour and three-hour films therefore fill a drive at very different rates even when they share a codec.

Bitrate and codec
A higher bitrate produces a larger file. A codec determines how much quality a given bitrate delivers. The ETSI report pairs HEVC with 8 to 16 Mbps and AVC with 15 to 25 Mbps, so an HEVC encode of similar visual quality is typically the smaller file. The bitrate range is a typical range, not a guarantee for any particular title, and encoders vary.
Audio, subtitles, and extras
Every additional audio track, subtitle language, menu, and bonus feature adds data on top of the main video stream. Libraries that keep several languages or full bonus discs will hold fewer films than the video-only estimate suggests.

File size (GB) ≈ bitrate (Mbps) × runtime (seconds) ÷ 8,000
The divisor converts bits to bytes (÷ 8) and megabytes to gigabytes (÷ 1,000). Work through it this way:

- Get NVMe solid state performance with up to 1050MB/s read and 1000MB/s write speeds in a portable, high-capacity drive(1) (Based on internal testing; performance may be lower depending on host device & other factors. 1MB=1,000,000 bytes.)
- Up to 3-meter drop protection and IP65 water and dust resistance mean this tough drive can take a beating(3) (Previously rated for 2-meter drop protection and IP55 rating. Now qualified for the higher, stated specs.)
- Use the handy carabiner loop to secure it to your belt loop or backpack for extra peace of mind.
- Help keep private content private with the included password protection featuring 256‐bit AES hardware encryption.(3)
- Easily manage files and automatically free up space with the SanDisk Memory Zone app.(5). Non-Operating Temperature -20°C to 85°C
- Convert the runtime to seconds. Two hours is 7,200 seconds; three hours is 10,800.
- Pick a bitrate from the table range that matches your codec.
- Multiply the bitrate by the runtime, then divide by 8,000. For example, 16 × 7,200 ÷ 8,000 = 14.4 GB.
- Divide usable capacity by that size. For 2,000 GB, 2,000 ÷ 14.4 ≈ 139 films.
The formula leaves out container overhead and peaks in variable-bitrate encoding, so treat its output as a planning figure.

Replace estimates with real file sizes
For a precise library count, measure actual files rather than relying on the formula:

- Windows: In File Explorer, switch to View > Details to add a Size column for each file. For a whole folder, right-click it and choose Properties; the Size line shows the total.
- macOS: Select a file in Finder and press Command-I to open Get Info, which lists its Size.
Divide your drive’s usable space by the average size of your real files. Averages from a mixed library are more reliable than a single sample.

Ultra HD Blu-ray discs come in 66 GB dual-layer and 100 GB triple-layer capacities, according to the Blu-ray Disc Association’s Ultra HD benefits page, which is undated. The same page gives maximum video rates of 108 Mbps for 66 GB discs and 128 Mbps for 100 GB discs. The Digital Entertainment Group’s Blu-ray Disc Initiative page describes the same capacities independently.
On a 2,000 GB drive, those capacities equal about 30 discs at 66 GB or 20 discs at 100 GB. These are capacity counts, not movie counts. Capacity is a ceiling, and a disc-quality copy does not necessarily fill it. A library of full disc-quality copies will hold far fewer films than the streaming-style estimates above, while a library of compressed encodes will hold more.
Why a 2 TB drive shows less than 2 TB
Storage makers count 1 TB as 1,000 GB, which is the convention used throughout this article. Operating systems often count in powers of 1,024. Windows, for example, displays a 2 TB drive as roughly 1.82 TB. The drive has the same capacity either way; only the unit changes. Formatting and system files then reduce the usable space further.
To avoid unit mixing, compare decimal file sizes against the decimal capacity of the drive, not against the number your operating system displays.
