Kubuntu is Ubuntu with the KDE Plasma desktop. If you are choosing between Kubuntu, Linux Mint and Ubuntu, the practical difference is mostly the desktop you will live in every day, and that is where the case for Kubuntu is strongest. The rest of this article separates what the official sources confirm from the author’s personal experience.
What Kubuntu is
The official Kubuntu website describes it as an operating system that combines the power of Ubuntu with the KDE Plasma desktop. In practical terms, Kubuntu shares Ubuntu’s base system and software archive, but it uses KDE’s desktop environment instead of Ubuntu’s default GNOME desktop. Linux Mint is a separate distribution with its own base and its own default desktop, Cinnamon.
That distinction explains most of what you will notice. Command-line tools, many packages and a large share of Ubuntu’s documentation carry over. What changes is the window management, the panel, the application menu, the settings tools and the way software is installed and updated.
Why the desktop is the reason to choose it
The author of the article that prompted this piece, Nick Lewis of How-To Geek (syndicated by Yahoo Tech on September 16, 2026), argues that Plasma’s familiar default layout and its flexibility make Kubuntu worth considering for newcomers and for people who like to customize their desktop. That is his assessment of the experience, not a measured ranking. KDE’s own Plasma page makes a related design claim: Plasma “is designed to be easy to use.” That is the project describing its goal, not an independent usability study.

- 15.6" FHD (1920x1080) Non-Touch Anti-Glare Display - Intel UHD 620 Integrated Graphics - Stereo Speakers
- 720p HD Webcam with Privacy Shutter. Integrated Microphone - Intel Dual Band Wireless-AC (2x2) 8265, Bluetooth Version 4.2

- Linux Mint (Cinnamon) 64-Bit - Keyboard with Full NumberPad - Fast Charging
In practice, Plasma’s flexibility shows up in a few places:
- Layout control. Panels, widgets and window behavior can be rearranged, which suits users who want a Windows-style taskbar or a more minimal setup.
- Application management. KDE documents Discover as the tool for managing applications.
- Quick launching. KRunner, the search-and-run tool, handles launching applications and other quick tasks from a single keyboard shortcut.
- System settings. KDE documents extensive settings covering hardware, software and workspaces, all in one place.
Phone integration with KDE Connect
KDE Connect is a separate feature of the Plasma ecosystem. KDE documents file sharing and notification synchronization between a computer and Android devices, along with other controls. If you already work across a laptop and a phone, this is one of the clearer reasons Kubuntu may fit your routine better than a desktop without that integration. The feature is documented by KDE; whether it works smoothly with your particular phone and network is something to test yourself.

How the three distributions compare
The table below uses only what the sources reviewed for this article establish. Where a comparison is not established, the cell says so.

The gaps in this table are important. No independent benchmark or lifecycle comparison of Kubuntu, Mint and Ubuntu was located, so no universal winner can be declared on performance, stability or support length. Choose based on the desktop you want and the hardware you have.

Which release to install
The official Kubuntu website lists 26.04 LTS as the current release. A 26.10 beta is also available, and the site describes it as a pre-release for testing, not for production use. For a machine you depend on each day, install the LTS release. Keep the beta for a spare computer or a virtual machine where a broken update does not matter.
KDE’s Plasma page, accessed on the same date, identifies Plasma 6.7 as its latest release. Version numbers change, so confirm both the Kubuntu release and the Plasma version on the official websites before you download.

The hardware claim, read carefully
The article says its author runs Kubuntu on a Surface Laptop 4 and that it performs beautifully there. That is a first-hand report from one machine. No benchmark of that laptop was retrieved, and the report does not establish how Kubuntu will behave on other hardware. Treat it as a reason to try the distribution, not as evidence that it is faster than Mint or Ubuntu.

Using Ubuntu guides and DEB packages on Kubuntu
Because Kubuntu is built on Ubuntu, many Ubuntu instructions and DEB packages work with it. The article states that this is generally true. That claim was not checked package by package for this piece, so verify it for each case.

Two situations need extra care:
- Desktop-specific steps. Tutorials written for GNOME may describe menus, settings panels or extensions that do not exist in Plasma. Keep the command-line steps and check any step that refers to the desktop.
- Third-party packages. A package built for Ubuntu usually installs on Kubuntu, but it may pull in GNOME libraries or have Plasma integration problems. Check the package’s own documentation before installing it.
Who should consider Kubuntu
- You want Plasma’s layout, panel and settings tools rather than GNOME or Cinnamon.
- You use an Android phone and want KDE Connect’s file sharing and notifications.
- You are comfortable following Ubuntu documentation and checking desktop-specific steps for Plasma.
- You are willing to run the LTS release on your main machine and keep the beta away from it.
If you mainly want a setup where the desktop stays out of the way and you prefer a familiar Cinnamon layout, Linux Mint is a reasonable choice. If you want Ubuntu’s own desktop and its direct upstream support path, Ubuntu is the straightforward option.
Supporting the project
KDE runs a store, the MetaStore, which sells books, mugs, apparel and other merchandise, with proceeds supporting KDE. Buying from it is an optional way to support the project. It is not required to use Kubuntu or Plasma.
The article you may have read is one user’s account. It is useful for seeing how Kubuntu feels in daily use, but the factual claims in this article come from the official Kubuntu website and KDE’s documentation, and the comparisons with Mint and Ubuntu are limited to what those sources establish.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesKubuntu is a sound choice if the desktop is your main concern. The title’s claim that it has been overlooked for years is the author’s framing; no usage figures were located to confirm it.
The Bottom Line
Choose Kubuntu if you want the Plasma desktop on an Ubuntu base and you are prepared to install the LTS release. Choose Linux Mint if Cinnamon suits you better, and Ubuntu if you want GNOME. The sources do not establish that any of the three is faster or more stable than the others.
