Deleting the Windows.old folder removes the saved copy of your previous Windows installation. Your current Windows keeps running and nothing you use day to day is touched, but the built-in Go back option to the earlier version disappears, and Microsoft states that this deletion cannot be undone through that rollback route. Before you remove it, confirm you no longer need the old version and that you have copied out any personal files you want to keep.

What Windows.old contains

When you upgrade an existing Windows installation, Setup keeps the previous version on the same drive so you can return to it. Microsoft describes the Windows.old folder as holding the previous version of Windows on the device, and removing it deletes those saved installation files. Windows also keeps a related hidden folder, $windows.~bt, as part of the go-back set. Microsoft’s guidance is to keep both if you may want to roll back, which is why cleanup tools remove the previous installation as a single category rather than letting you delete the folder by hand.

What you lose when it is gone

Once the previous installation is deleted, the Go back option is no longer available, and you cannot return to the earlier Windows version using that route. Microsoft’s deletion instructions state: “If you delete your previous version of Windows, this can’t be undone (you won’t be able to go back to your previous version of Windows).” (Microsoft Support, Delete your previous version of Windows)

The current installation is not damaged by the deletion. What changes is only the saved copy of the old system and any files that were still inside it.

The ten-day rollback window

Windows normally deletes the previous installation automatically ten days after an upgrade. Microsoft’s go-back guidance describes the option as available for ten days in most cases, and the official file-retrieval article says: “There are only 10 days to retrieve files from the Windows.old folder.” (Microsoft Support, Go back to the previous version of Windows; Microsoft Support, Retrieve files from the Windows.old folder after a Windows upgrade) Treat ten days as Microsoft’s standard timing rather than a guarantee for every device, since managed or customized systems can behave differently.

Check for files before you delete

Most upgrades keep your personal files in the live Windows profile, so the old installation is mainly a rollback safety net. The exception is an upgrade where “Nothing” was selected under “Choose what to keep.” In that case, personal files may be saved temporarily inside Windows.old for the ten-day period. Microsoft describes how to copy them out of the folder.

  • 256 GB SSD of storage.
  • Multitasking is easy with 16GB of RAM
  • Equipped with a blazing fast Core i5 2.00 GHz processor.

Before cleanup, do the following:

  • Check Documents, Desktop, Downloads, Pictures and any application data folders you use for files that exist only in Windows.old.
  • Copy anything you need to an external USB flash drive or another location. Microsoft lists an external USB flash drive among possible backup destinations, but the documentation does not establish how much storage you need, and a drive is not required to delete the folder.
  • Confirm that the new installation works for the apps and devices you rely on. Rollback is the only reason to keep the folder once you are satisfied.

How to delete the previous installation

Use the built-in cleanup controls rather than deleting the folder manually in File Explorer. The previous installation is listed as a removable system-file category, and removing it requires an administrator account. Menu labels can change between Windows releases and updates, so check that the selected item is the previous Windows installation before you confirm.

Windows 11

  1. Open Settings and go to System > Storage.
  2. Select Temporary files.

Windows 10

  1. Open Settings and go to System > Storage.
  2. Select Temporary files, then choose the previous Windows installation for removal and confirm.

Microsoft’s instructions for specified Windows 10 versions also cover removing the folder with Storage Sense. (Microsoft Support, KB5012334 — Delete the Windows.old folder using Storage sense in the Settings app) Microsoft ended mainstream support for Windows 10 on October 14, 2025, according to its go-back page, so the cleanup steps are the same whether or not your PC still receives updates, but the operating system itself should be reviewed separately.

Disk Cleanup

  1. Search the Start menu for Disk Cleanup and open it.
  2. Select the Windows drive, usually C:.
  3. Select Clean up system files, then tick the previous Windows installation(s) category if it is offered.
  4. Select OK and confirm the deletion.

Keep it or remove it

The choice comes down to whether you still need the rollback route, whether files remain to be retrieved, and how much disk space you need.

If the folder is missing or cleanup is unavailable

A missing Windows.old folder does not mean Windows is broken. The folder may already have been removed automatically after the rollback period. Some later setup actions also replace it: a subsequent install, upgrade, refresh or reset may delete the existing contents and create a new folder where applicable. Microsoft says Reset this PC does not create Windows.old in the scenarios it documents. (Microsoft Support, Retrieve files from the Windows.old folder after a Windows upgrade)

If the Temporary files option does not list a previous Windows installation, the folder is probably already gone or was never created by your upgrade path. Cleanup controls and labels can also vary with your Windows version, so use Microsoft’s current Free up drive space guidance to locate the right category.
