To keep an ordinary website from seeing your primary email address, create an email alias or mask with a forwarding service and use that address at signup. The service sends messages to your existing inbox, so you can receive verification and recovery emails without giving the site your usual address. That is useful privacy protection, but it is not full anonymity: the alias service handles the forwarding, and other details you provide or reveal can still identify you.

What an email mask does—and what it does not do

An email mask is a different address you give to a website. Mail sent to that address is forwarded to an inbox you already use. Some services also let you reply through the alias, so the recipient sees the alias rather than your primary address. Mozilla describes Firefox Relay masks as forwarding addresses, and Proton documents randomized aliases with forwarding and alias-based replies: Mozilla Firefox Relay mask help and Proton Pass aliases.

This limits the signup site’s direct access to your primary address. It does not guarantee that you are anonymous, prevent tracking, bypass fraud checks, or satisfy identity verification. A forwarding service remains part of the mail route, and a site may identify you through other information you submit or activity it observes.

A mask is also different from a separate mailbox, which stores mail in its own account rather than forwarding it to your existing inbox. Disposable inboxes are another option and may be short-lived; the provider documentation cited here describes forwarding aliases, not a universal definition or behavior for every disposable email service.

How to create and use an email alias

  1. Choose a provider or built-in feature. Examples documented by their providers include Firefox Relay, Proton Pass or Proton Mail aliases, and Apple Hide My Email. Start with a service whose controls and delivery behavior suit the account you are creating.
  2. Create a mask or alias. Use the provider’s dashboard, app, browser extension, or supported device flow to generate an address. Mozilla documents creating and managing masks through Relay; Proton documents alias creation in Pass and Mail; Apple documents Hide My Email for eligible users. See Mozilla’s mask-generation instructions, Proton Mail alias instructions, and Apple’s Hide My Email guide.
  3. Enter the generated address at signup. Use it in the website’s email field instead of your primary address. Complete any verification step by opening the message delivered to your forwarding inbox.
  4. Keep the alias manageable. Where the service allows it, label or track aliases by site. Keep an alias active for as long as you may need password resets, account notices, or recovery messages. If unwanted mail arrives, use the service’s block, disable, or removal controls when available.
  5. Check delivery before depending on it. Confirm that the site accepts the address and that required messages and attachments arrive. Keep access to the receiving inbox and the alias service for the life of an account that matters.

Which alias service should you consider?

These are examples, not a complete market survey or an independently tested ranking. Provider descriptions do not establish that the services offer equivalent features. Compare the forwarding destination, alias limits, blocking controls, reply support, device and subscription requirements, site acceptance, attachment handling, and suitability for account recovery.

Firefox Relay Masks forward to a true email address and can be managed in a dashboard. Mozilla’s product page also describes blocking and removal of common email trackers from forwarded mail; that is Mozilla’s product claim, not independent efficacy testing. Firefox Relay Mozilla’s help page states that the free tier allows up to five masks and Premium allows unlimited masks. These are plan details reported on its current help page as of October 8, 2026, and may change. Mozilla mask help
Proton Pass or Proton Mail Proton describes randomized aliases that forward to a mailbox and support replies through the alias. It also documents creating aliases in Proton Mail. Proton Pass aliases · Proton Mail alias instructions Proton’s support page states that Proton Free and Mail Plus allow up to 10 aliases, while Pass Plus or Proton Unlimited allow unlimited aliases. When an alias is a poor choice

Use an address you can reliably access for important or identity-verified communications. Mozilla advises against masks where identity verification is required or for very important messages, with examples including a bank, doctor, lawyer, or boarding pass. Compatibility and delivery can also vary. Mozilla’s FAQ says some sites reject masks or accept addresses only from major providers; forwarding can be blocked, delayed, or routed to spam. Mozilla specifically notes that attachments larger than 10 MB can be a problem for Relay. That attachment guidance is specific to Relay, not a general limit for every alias service. For an account where recovery mail or attachments are essential, verify that the site accepts the mask and test delivery before relying on it.

Is a “fake email” the same as an anonymous email?

Not usually. For a normal signup, an alias is better understood as a privacy layer than as a fake identity: it hides your primary address from the site while keeping mail deliverable to you. Do not use it to misrepresent your identity where a service requires accurate details or verification. The Associated Press has quoted Mozilla saying, “We state very clearly we’re not keeping a copy of anything that passes through our servers,” attributing the statement to a source identified only by the surname Yen. That statement is Mozilla’s description as reported by AP, not an independent guarantee about anonymity or a substitute for reviewing a provider’s current privacy terms. Associated Press explainer.
