No: the public record does not show that Nintendo took down every Switch emulator. It documents DMCA notices targeting named repositories and, in some cases, large networks of forks. A separate 2024 court judgment ended the Yuzu project’s case, but it did not rule that all emulators are unlawful. Whether every emulator, fork, or mirror remains available today has not been established.

What Nintendo’s takedowns cover—and what they don’t

“Every Switch emulator” is not a verified count. Nintendo has sent GitHub notices naming repositories associated with multiple projects, and GitHub has processed notices that covered whole fork networks. A repository is not the same thing as a distinct emulator project: one project can have many forks, while software can also be hosted outside GitHub.

In August 2026, TorrentFreak reported that seven Nintendo notices affected more than 400 repositories in a single day. A GitHub notice from that sweep documented one Suyu fork network of 311 repositories, including its parent repository. These are repository counts—not counts of 400 active emulators or proof that every copy of every project disappeared.

The available records establish specific notices and network removals, not the live status of every project, mirror, or self-hosted distribution channel as of October 8, 2026. They therefore support neither “all emulation is gone” nor “the takedowns had no effect.”

What a GitHub DMCA notice means

A DMCA notice is a claimant’s request to a platform, not itself a court judgment. Nintendo’s notices state its allegations and identify material it wants removed. GitHub says in its public notices that it contacted some or all affected repository owners and provided information about filing counter-notices. A repository can be disabled through that platform process without a new court finding about that repository.

A counter-notice is part of the platform’s procedure for disputing a removal; it should not be confused with a court ruling that resolves the underlying copyright or circumvention questions. The notices document Nintendo’s claims and GitHub’s processing, not a judicial decision against every named project.

Why Nintendo says the emulators violate the DMCA

Nintendo’s notices describe Switch games as encrypted and allege that the targeted emulators use unauthorized copies of cryptographic keys to decrypt unauthorized game files. Nintendo argues that this involves circumventing technological protection measures under the DMCA. Those statements are Nintendo’s legal position in its notices; they are not independent court findings about every emulator mentioned.

The distinction matters because “emulator” describes software that imitates a system’s behavior, while Nintendo’s notices focus on alleged circumvention and use of keys and game files. The notice theory should not be broadened into a claim that a court has declared every kind of emulation unlawful.

What the Yuzu judgment decided

The clearest court outcome is Nintendo of America Inc. v. Tropic Haze LLC, the 2024 case involving Yuzu. The parties jointly moved for entry of judgment. The United States District Court for the District of Rhode Island awarded Nintendo US$2.4 million and entered a permanent injunction against Tropic Haze and covered parties.

The judgment states: “Yuzu is primarily designed to circumvent and play Nintendo Switch games.” It also addresses Yuzu’s decryption of Switch games during runtime using unauthorized copies of cryptographic keys. The injunction bars the defendant and covered parties from trafficking in Yuzu and specified circumvention software or devices.

This was a judgment resolving the Yuzu case after a joint motion, not a contested appellate ruling establishing a nationwide rule for every emulator developer. Its scope should not be casually extended to unrelated projects or people not covered by the order.

How the events fit together

  • March 4–6, 2024: The court entered judgment and a permanent injunction in the Tropic Haze case, awarding Nintendo US$2.4 million.
  • July 5, 2024: A Nintendo notice to GitHub named repositories associated with projects including Suyu, Nuzu, Uzuy, Torzu, and Sudachi. Nintendo asserted that Yuzu and code based on it circumvented its technological protection measures.
  • October 2024: Ryujinx’s shutdown after contact from Nintendo was reported. The court records cited here do not establish a Ryujinx judgment.
  • March 27, 2026: A Nintendo notice named repositories offering or linking to projects including Citron, Eden, Ziunx, Nyushu, Suyu, and Yuzu.
  • August 17, 2026: A GitHub public notice recorded processing a Nintendo notice against a Suyu repository and a fork network of 311 repositories, counting the parent.
  • August 2026: TorrentFreak reported seven notices affecting more than 400 repositories in a single day. That reported total counts repositories, not distinct projects.

How to read the different kinds of evidence

Record What it establishes What it does not establish
Nintendo DMCA notice Nintendo identified material and stated its legal allegations. A court’s independent finding that every allegation is correct, or that every emulator is unlawful.
GitHub notice GitHub processed the identified request; some or all affected owners were contacted and given counter-notice information. The status of copies hosted elsewhere or a separate judicial ruling against each repository.
Tropic Haze judgment A judgment, damages award, and injunction in the Yuzu case, binding on the defendant and covered parties. A contested appellate decision governing all unrelated emulator projects.
Keighin document, October 2025 A magistrate judge’s recommendation in a default case focused on alleged piracy and streaming conduct. A contested test case settling the general legality of emulators.

So, can Switch emulators still exist?

The notices and court order do not establish that every emulator or copy has vanished, and they do not guarantee that any particular project remains available or functional. GitHub removals can affect repositories and forks on that platform; they do not, by themselves, document the status of off-platform hosting. The records also do not verify the maintenance or functionality of each project as of October 8, 2026.

Nintendo Switch – Neon Red and Neon Blue Joy-Con (Renewed)
  • One player can use a Joy-Con in each hand
  • Two players can each take one
  • Multiple Joy-Con can be employed by numerous people for a variety of gameplay options (additional Joy-Con sold separately)
  • Slip a set of Joy-Con into a Joy-Con grip accessory, mirroring a more traditional controller. Or, select an optional Nintendo Switch Pro Controller.

The careful answer is that Nintendo’s campaign has caused documented repository removals and Yuzu was subject to a specific court judgment and injunction, while the overall current availability and legal status of every other project remain unresolved by these records.
