Apple announced the iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max on September 9, 2024. The Pro has a 6.3-inch display and the Pro Max a 6.9-inch display; both use the A18 Pro chip, add Camera Control, and include a 48MP Fusion camera, a 48MP Ultra Wide camera, and a 5x Telephoto camera. At announcement, U.S. starting prices were $999 and $1,199, respectively—historical launch prices, not current pricing.
What distinguishes the iPhone 16 Pro from the Pro Max?
Apple’s announcement emphasized display size and starting price as the key differences. It described the same A18 Pro chip and rear camera specifications for both models, including the 5x Telephoto camera.

Prices are the U.S. launch starting prices Apple announced in September 2024, not a statement of current retail or resale pricing. Apple’s release lists storage capacities for the family, but the model-specific configurations are not established here, so this comparison does not assign a capacity to either phone.
What was new about the displays and design?
Apple described both panels as Super Retina XDR displays with Always-On and ProMotion. The company said the phones use a titanium design and a Ceramic Shield front cover; it characterized the Shield as “2x tougher than glass on any other smartphone.” That durability comparison is Apple’s claim, not an independent test result.

Apple also said an updated internal architecture improves heat dissipation and efficiency, enabling up to 20 percent better sustained performance. This is likewise a manufacturer claim rather than a separately measured benchmark.
How does Camera Control work?
Camera Control is a physical control combining a tactile switch, force sensor, and capacitive sensor. Apple said it can open the camera, take a photo, start video recording, and adjust settings such as zoom, exposure, and depth of field.

At announcement, Apple also described visual intelligence and a two-stage shutter as future software capabilities. They should not be read as features already available on September 9, 2024. Apple said it would offer cases designed to work with Camera Control.

What cameras and video features did Apple announce?
Both Pro models were announced with a 48MP Fusion camera, a 48MP Ultra Wide camera, and a 5x Telephoto camera. Apple highlighted 4K video recording at 120 frames per second in Dolby Vision. These are Apple’s stated specifications and feature descriptions, not independent findings about image quality.

- Still photography: Apple also highlighted macro photography, spatial photos, and updated Photographic Styles.
- Video and sound: The announcement listed spatial video, four studio-quality microphones, and Audio Mix.
What chip and performance claims did Apple make?
Apple said both phones use its A18 Pro chip and are built for Apple Intelligence. In its announcement, Greg Joswiak, Apple’s senior vice president of Worldwide Marketing, called them “the most advanced iPhone models we’ve ever made.” That is Apple’s marketing characterization. Software availability and feature support can change over time; the launch announcement alone does not establish current Apple Intelligence availability.

Apple announced the models on September 9, 2024, and stated that U.S. preorders would begin September 13, with availability beginning September 20. Those dates describe the original launch plan, not present availability. Apple also announced a Qi2-certified MagSafe charger supporting wireless charging up to 25W. The rate is Apple’s announced maximum for that charger, not a claim about every charger or charging setup.
