To visit a remote island responsibly, first confirm that landing is allowed and follow the island’s current access, biosecurity, and wildlife rules. Use approved routes and landing sites, keep well away from animals and nesting areas, prevent pests hitchhiking in your gear, and take all waste back with you. Rules differ by island and jurisdiction, so check the managing authority’s guidance before booking and again shortly before travel.
What to check before you book
“Remote” does not mean open to visitors. An island may restrict access by season, time of day, permit, group size, landing zone, vessel status, or activity. Find the authority that manages the specific island and check whether visitors may land at all. Confirm current rules for permits, closures, allowed hours, pets, drones, fires, camping, food, and water activities.
For example, Parks Australia’s Coral Sea guidance limits access to sunrise through sunset, prohibits camping, pets, and fires, bars water sports within 500 metres of islands, and restricts drones above or within 100 metres of an island. Commercial tourism requires authorization. These are Coral Sea rules, not a template for other destinations; consult the current Coral Sea island guidance for its specific conditions.
Ask operators specific questions
If you are considering a tour, ask whether the operator is authorized and how it handles permits, visitor and vessel biosecurity, group size, landing sites, wildlife distances, and signs of disturbance. In the UK, government guidance recommends responsible wildlife tour companies and names the WiSe Wildlife Safe scheme. WiSe is a UK reference, not an international guarantee or proof of zero impact. Check the England marine wildlife-watching code and the operator’s own current procedures.

How to keep pests off a pest-free island
Seeds, soil, insects, and small animals can travel unnoticed in footwear, clothing, bags, and boats. New Zealand’s Department of Conservation (DOC) summarizes its pest-prevention advice as “Check, Clean, Close”: inspect gear, remove soil and seeds, and keep bags zipped. Follow any island-specific checklist or treatment requirement, and pack food in sealed containers. Gear stored at home or in a garage can still carry pests.
- Check shoes, clothing, bags, camping equipment, and other gear for soil, seeds, insects, and other hitchhikers.
- Clean footwear and equipment thoroughly, especially seams, soles, and pockets.
- Keep bags closed between checks and while travelling.
- Read and complete any required destination checklist before departure.
Use the relevant DOC visitor guidance for New Zealand destinations; procedures vary by island. If bringing a boat or kayak, check it for rats, mice, ants, and skinks as DOC advises. Some Fiordland island visits require a Clean Vessel Pass. Coral Sea islands require vessels to be treated for pests by a licensed pest controller. Neither requirement applies universally: verify the rules for your destination and vessel.
How to move around without disturbing wildlife
Follow signs and instructions from staff or guides. Stay on formed tracks and boardwalks, use approved landing areas, and respect any high-water boundary. Walk slowly and quietly while watching where you step: eggs and chicks can be camouflaged, and nests or burrows may be easy to miss.

Do not feed, touch, chase, call, surround, or follow animals. Avoid flash photography and loud activity. If birds call repeatedly, swoop, leave a nest, or otherwise change their behaviour, move farther away and withdraw calmly. Disturbance can cause adult birds to leave eggs and chicks exposed to heat, cold, or predators; repeated disruption can reduce breeding success or drive colonies away. The Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority advises visitors to land and launch away from birds and keep clear of colonies. See its seabird guidance for the relevant regional context.

Use the distance set by the island’s current authority, species-specific guidance, signs, or guide—and move farther away if an animal reacts. Published figures from one place should not be carried over to another:
- England’s government code says to try to stay at least 100 metres (330 feet) from marine wildlife and farther if needed.
- New Zealand subantarctic guidance sets a minimum of 5 metres, while warning that this can still be too close for some species.
- South Georgia’s 2024–25 visitor guidelines set different minimums for different wildlife groups; travellers to South Georgia should use the current season’s guidance rather than rely on those older figures.
These are local examples, not a worldwide standard. The England code, DOC subantarctic island guidance, and South Georgia visitor information apply to their respective places and activities; check the destination’s current rules before approaching wildlife.

If an animal approaches you
Stay calm and move away slowly without touching it. Do not pick up or move a young animal that appears to be alone; that may be normal. If an animal is sick, dead, stranded, or distressed, keep people away, note the location, and contact the local wildlife or biosecurity authority. Do not touch or move it. Reporting contacts and response procedures are destination-specific.

Check local approach, speed, and water-access rules before launching or entering the water. England’s guidance calls for boats to travel under 6 knots and remain at least 100 metres from marine wildlife. It also advises a steady speed and direction if dolphins, whales, or porpoises approach to surf a boat’s wake, allowing them to leave when they choose. These are England-specific recommendations, not general limits for every island or vessel.
Enter the water at designated access points and avoid sensitive resting, feeding, breeding, nesting, seagrass, and other habitat. Carry small craft rather than dragging them over sensitive areas, and secure diving hoses and gauges so they do not trail across habitat.

Where local rules address lighting, follow them. DOC warns that night lights can disorient seabirds and contribute to fatal collisions; use only the minimum lighting needed for navigation and safety. Coral Sea island guidance also restricts non-essential vessel lighting. Check the applicable DOC guidance or Coral Sea rules rather than assuming the same restriction applies elsewhere.
What to pack—and what to take home
Plan to carry out everything you bring in, including food scraps and fishing equipment. Some island rules require visitors to remove biodegradable waste as well as rubbish. Do not bury waste or leave food because it seems “natural”; scraps can attract animals or pests.
- Pack sealed food containers and bags that can be kept zipped closed.
- Bring a way to carry out rubbish and scraps, including biodegradable waste where required.
- Consider compact binoculars for watching wildlife from a distance. England’s code also suggests camera zoom as an alternative to approaching; neither tool overrides local access restrictions or required distances.
- Check whether your destination restricts lights, food, equipment, or other items before packing them.
Choosing between a self-guided visit and a tour
Neither option is automatically lower-impact. Compare the practical safeguards, not just the format:
| What to compare | Questions to ask |
|---|---|
| Permission and authorization | Is visitor access allowed, and does the operator have any required permits or authorization? |
| Biosecurity | How are visitors’ gear and the vessel checked, cleaned, or treated? |
| Wildlife practice | What distances are followed, and what does the group do if animals show signs of disturbance? |
| Landing and routes | Are approved landing sites and routes used, and how is group size managed? |
| Local knowledge | What local training or accreditation does the operator have, and what does it cover? |
For UK marine wildlife tours, government guidance identifies WiSe Wildlife Safe as a scheme to look for. Confirm what an operator’s training or accreditation covers; a scheme or credential does not by itself establish that a trip has zero impact.
