Insert the Xbox Series X|S storage expansion card into the dedicated slot on the back of the console. The console should format and configure it automatically; no separate manual formatting step is included in the manufacturer’s installation instructions.
Before you install the card
Use a storage expansion card designed for Xbox Series X|S, not just any external drive. Seagate’s Xbox-specific expansion card is designed for these consoles and supports Xbox Velocity Architecture. Seagate lists 1TB, 2TB, and 4TB capacities; check the exact model and your regional listing, since capacity does not establish price or availability.
A USB external drive is a different kind of storage. SanDisk’s support guidance says Xbox Series X|S-optimized games cannot be played from external USB storage. The available guidance does not establish all rules for storing or moving every game, so do not assume a USB drive works as a direct substitute for the dedicated card.

Install and configure the expansion card
- Locate the storage expansion slot on the back of the Xbox Series X|S console.
- Insert the expansion card into that dedicated slot.
- Allow the console to format and configure the card automatically. The cited manufacturer installation guide does not describe a separate manual formatting operation.
Choose a capacity
Seagate lists 1TB, 2TB, and 4TB versions of its Storage Expansion Card for Xbox Series X|S. Choose based on the storage you want to add; the listed capacities alone do not establish which option is best for a particular game library.

Manage storage or troubleshoot
For menu-level storage choices or an expansion card the console does not recognize, consult the current Xbox Support guide to using a storage expansion card and its storage-management guidance. Those official pages are the appropriate place to check current interface steps; the manufacturer installation instructions establish automatic setup but do not provide verified menu paths or troubleshooting steps.
