To check your Chromebook’s battery health and cycle count, open Settings > About ChromeOS > Diagnostics, then select Battery. You can also search for Diagnostics from the launcher. Google documents the app for ChromeOS 90 and later. Its readings help explain battery capacity and charging behavior, but they do not provide a universal percentage at which every Chromebook battery should be replaced.
How to check Chromebook battery health and cycle count
- Open Settings > About ChromeOS > Diagnostics. Alternatively, search for Diagnostics in the launcher.
- In Diagnostics, open the Battery category.
- Review the battery health percentage, cycle count, and electrical current. You can also run the discharge test to check the charge and discharge rate over a fixed period.
Google says the Diagnostics app is available on devices running ChromeOS 90 and later. Menus and diagnostic behavior may vary by model and ChromeOS version. Google Chromebook Help: Use Diagnostics to troubleshoot your issue.
What the battery health percentage means
Battery health compares the battery’s reported full charge capacity with its design capacity: full charge capacity divided by design capacity. Full charge capacity is the amount the battery can currently reach, while design capacity is its stated design-capacity figure. A percentage close to 100% means the two reported capacities are close; a lower percentage means the current full charge capacity is lower relative to design capacity.

This percentage is a capacity comparison, not a direct measure of how many hours your Chromebook will run. Consider it alongside your actual runtime and charging behavior. Google’s consumer guidance does not establish one battery-health percentage that applies as a replacement threshold to every Chromebook. Google Chrome Enterprise: Device fields.

How to interpret cycle count and wear
Cycle count is a separate reading from battery health. It indicates how many times the battery has been depleted and recharged; the number varies with battery type and use. It is useful context, but it is not a precise meter of remaining battery life by itself.
ChromiumOS documentation for an OEM diagnostic routine lists default configured limits of 1,000 cycles and 50 percent wear. Those are settings for that diagnostic routine, not a universal Chromebook replacement recommendation or a manufacturer warranty threshold. ChromiumOS OEM battery-health diagnostic routine.

What the Diagnostics discharge test can tell you
The discharge test measures the charge and discharge rate over a fixed period. Google says a very low rate may indicate a problem with the battery or the charging port. It does not prove that the battery alone is faulty, so treat the result as a reason to investigate rather than a diagnosis of a specific failed part.

What to do if your Chromebook will not charge
- Check that the charger is connected at both ends and that the power outlet works.
- Disconnect and reconnect the charger.
- Leave the Chromebook charging for at least 30 minutes.
- Use the Diagnostics app to check for battery issues.
- If the problem continues, contact the Chromebook’s manufacturer for model-specific support.

When to ask about battery service
Consider contacting the manufacturer when charging problems persist after the basic checks, or when poor runtime is consistent with a lower capacity reading. Ask about service for your exact Chromebook model rather than relying on a cycle-count or health-percentage cutoff that Google does not specify. If a replacement is recommended, confirm that any part is explicitly compatible with the model and follow the manufacturer’s repair guidance.
