Ring’s AI Unusual Event Alert (beta) learns routine activity for a camera and notifies you when activity may be out of the ordinary. To use it, you need an eligible Ring subscription and Video Descriptions enabled; availability also depends on your device, language, location, and rollout status.
What Ring Unusual Event Alert does
Ring describes Unusual Event Alert as a feature that identifies activity around your home that may be out of the ordinary. It uses Ring Video Descriptions to learn everyday patterns at a property, then looks for activity that differs from those patterns. Ring’s example is a pack of coyotes appearing in a yard where that is not normal activity for the camera. Ring’s CES 2026 announcement describes the feature as learning and adapting to everyday routine patterns.
“Unusual” is specific to the camera’s observed routine, not a universal category such as a person or vehicle. The feature is in beta, and Ring does not publish a numeric accuracy, false-positive, or notification-reduction rate in the cited materials.

- Eligible subscription: Ring identifies Unusual Event Alert as a subscription feature. Basic live view and real-time notifications may be available without a plan, but advanced recording and intelligent features require subscription coverage. Check the Ring Home plans page and your account’s eligibility.
- Video Descriptions: Enable Video Descriptions because Unusual Event Alert learns from them.
- Supported device and language: Ring limits availability to supported mobile devices and select primary languages. Eligibility may also depend on event volume and other device limitations.
- Location: Ring says the feature is unavailable to customers in Illinois because of state-specific legislation.
- Beta rollout: Availability can vary as Ring rolls out the feature. Confirm that it appears in your current Ring app rather than assuming every plan or camera is eligible.
Ring’s Video Descriptions and beta alerts guidance provides additional feature details. Device compatibility is model-specific; Ring’s Smart Alerts support page lists supported devices for related alert features, but check current compatibility and subscription eligibility for your own camera.

Why Ring says it is learning
The app may show a learning status while the camera establishes a baseline of everyday activity. Until it has learned a routine, it may not be ready to distinguish typical activity from unusual activity. Ring does not publish a fixed learning period, so do not assume there is a set number of hours or days before alerts begin.

How it differs from other Ring alerts
| Alert feature | What it does | How it differs |
|---|---|---|
| Unusual Event Alert (beta) | Learns a camera’s routine and notifies you when activity appears out of the ordinary. | Compares activity with a learned baseline rather than simply grouping alerts or identifying an object. |
| Single Event Alert (beta) | Combines similar alerts from the same camera. | Reduces duplicate notifications; it does not learn what is normal at the property. |
| Smart Alerts | Classifies motion as people, vehicles, packages, or other motion; users choose whether to receive notifications, recordings, or both. | Classifies activity into alert categories rather than judging whether it is unusual for that camera. |
| Person Detection | Identifies people; Ring says it is available for all cameras and doorbells. | Detects a type of activity, not a deviation from a learned routine. |
| Package Alerts | Detects packages on eligible doorbells. | Ring says it is available on all doorbells except Peephole Cam and Peephole Cam 2K; medium-to-large boxes are detected more reliably than envelopes, tubes, small boxes, or food deliveries. |
For current device and configuration details on Smart Alerts, see Ring’s Smart Alerts setup guide. The controls and eligibility for one alert type do not automatically establish eligibility for another.

What to check if the feature is unavailable
- Confirm that your Ring subscription covers intelligent features and that Video Descriptions are enabled.
- Check that the camera or doorbell and the mobile device are supported, and that the app is using a supported primary language.
- Check whether the feature is available for your location; Ring specifically excludes customers in Illinois.
- Look in the app for a learning status, and allow the camera to establish its routine rather than expecting an immediate baseline.
- Review Ring’s current intelligent-features settings guidance because beta availability and app labels can change.
