A November 2021 report said federal officials warned Jay-Z that his email account faced an “imminent hack” and urged him to delete his emails. That account came from an unnamed source quoted by Complex; the FBI did not publicly confirm the warning, and the reports did not establish that Jay-Z’s account was ever breached.
What did the report say?
On November 10, 2021, Complex reported that an unnamed source said federal officials had urged Jay-Z, whose legal name is Shawn Carter, to delete his emails after the FBI warned of an “imminent hack” on his email account. Complex said further details about the concern were not immediately available. Complex’s report
NME repeated the account the next day, describing the advice as a warning to delete sensitive emails. Neither outlet identified an attacker, specified when the alleged contact took place, or provided technical indicators of a planned or attempted intrusion. NME’s recap
Was Jay-Z’s email account actually hacked?
The reports do not confirm that it was. They describe an alleged warning, not a verified breach. There is no public technical evidence in these accounts showing that someone accessed Jay-Z’s email, and the identity of any suspected attacker remains unconfirmed. “Imminent hack” is the reported source’s wording, not a publicly established FBI technical finding.

Why was he reportedly told to delete emails?
The warning drew attention because it surfaced while Jay-Z was involved in litigation with Parlux Fragrances. Complex said a judge had previously ruled that Jay-Z destroyed evidence by deleting emails; NME also connected the coverage to the lawsuit. Complex NME
That timing explains why the reported advice was newsworthy, but the available accounts do not show that the lawsuit caused the warning or that the litigation and the alleged security concern were operationally connected.

How does the separate FBI email incident that week differ?
On November 13, 2021, two days after the Complex story, the FBI announced that fake emails had been sent from an FBI-operated server because of a software misconfiguration. The bureau said the affected server belonged to the Law Enforcement Enterprise Portal, not its corporate email service. It also said no actor accessed or compromised FBI network data or personally identifiable information, and that the vulnerability had been remediated. FBI statement

The FBI server incident is separate from the report about Jay-Z. It is not evidence that his account was hacked.

- Do not click unexpected links or open unsolicited attachments.
- Verify unusual or urgent requests using contact details you find independently, rather than replying to the message or using its links.
- Enable two-factor authentication or multi-factor authentication for email accounts.
These are general protections; the reports do not say which security measures Jay-Z used.
