When a video game publisher is acquired, the buyer gains control of the companies and rights included in the deal—not automatically every studio, game, platform license, or service associated with the publisher. A studio might keep its name and team, be reorganized, sold, or closed; a game might stay multiplatform, become exclusive, or remain available through a separate license. The outcome depends on the deal’s terms and decisions made afterward, so check the specific studio, title, platform, and service.
What does an acquisition actually change?
An acquisition transfers the assets and control specified in its transaction documents. The word “publisher” can hide several distinct things: ownership of a company, ownership of a development studio, intellectual property (IP), publishing responsibility, and the right to distribute a game on a particular platform or service. Those rights can be split, licensed, or excluded rather than moving together.
For players, that means the buyer may gain influence over future games without instantly changing where every existing game is sold. For employees, the announcement changes who owns the business, but it does not guarantee what the buyer will later do with teams, roles, or projects.
Ownership is not the same as every distribution right
A buyer may own a franchise while another company retains a license to publish or distribute particular games. In 2024, Embracer said that long-term licensing and publishing rights for Metro PC and console games remained with its PLAION group when selected Saber Interactive assets were sold. The Saber transaction therefore did not mean that all Metro rights went with those assets.

Microsoft’s restructured Activision Blizzard transaction offers another example: specified cloud-streaming rights were handled separately from the corporate acquisition. Microsoft announced a 15-year arrangement covering specified current and future Activision Blizzard PC and console games, with cloud-streaming rights transferred to Ubisoft under that arrangement. This was not a transfer of every Activision Blizzard right to Ubisoft.
What can happen to a studio and its employees?
A studio can remain a distinct team, move into a new reporting structure, have its responsibilities changed or reassigned, be sold, or close. The buyer may describe plans to invest or preserve collaboration when announcing a deal; those statements explain the company’s intentions at that time, not a binding guarantee of a studio’s long-term structure or a particular person’s job.
Microsoft’s 2020 announcement of its planned ZeniMax acquisition described more than 2,300 employees. After the deal closed, Xbox welcomed eight development studios into its organization. That initial integration did not prevent later organizational changes: Xbox updates have described shifts in studio remits and employee consultation on a proposed closure. The sequence illustrates why an announcement and the eventual organizational outcome are different things.

There is no reliable industry-wide retention rate established by these examples. It would be inaccurate to say that acquisitions always preserve jobs or that they inevitably cause layoffs. For an individual studio, distinguish confirmed changes from proposals and company statements from outcomes that have actually occurred.
Will a game stay on the same platforms?
There is no single platform rule that applies to every game in an acquired catalog. Existing platform agreements may continue for older releases, while the new owner may choose different platforms for future titles. Rights can also vary by console, PC, cloud gaming, subscription service, territory, and time period. A decision about one game does not establish what will happen to the publisher’s entire catalog.
Keep the roles separate when checking a title: the IP owner may differ from its publisher, storefront, server operator, or cloud and subscription licensee. A platform-store listing or a publisher or service announcement can help establish where a game is currently offered, but current availability alone does not prove what future releases will do.

Why the Activision Blizzard deal was restructured
In December 2022, the U.S. Federal Trade Commission challenged Microsoft’s proposed $69 billion acquisition of Activision Blizzard. The FTC argued that control of valuable gaming content could let Microsoft suppress competitors; that was the FTC’s allegation at that stage, not a final judicial finding.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesIn April 2023, the UK Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) blocked the original proposed transaction over cloud-gaming concerns. Microsoft then proposed a restructured deal that excluded specified cloud-streaming rights from its acquisition and transferred those rights to Ubisoft under the announced arrangement. The CMA accepted the restructured transaction in October 2023. The case shows that regulatory review can alter how rights are held and distributed while allowing a changed corporate transaction to proceed. It does not establish a general rule for other deals.
The CMA’s 2023 report also examined platform releases before and after Microsoft acquisitions and discussed ZeniMax in its analysis of exclusivity. That is a case-specific assessment tied to the report’s evidence and date, not a prediction that every future game from an acquired publisher will be exclusive—or multiplatform.

What happens to live games and unreleased projects?
Live games
For an ongoing game, ownership does not by itself guarantee that servers, updates, or customer support will continue. Look for a current statement from the company operating the service, and check whether servers are active, updates are arriving, support is available, and the game remains listed where you play it. Embracer described Cryptic’s live games as valuable when it announced its acquisition of Perfect World Entertainment, but that company expectation is not a promise of indefinite service.
Games in development
A buyer can continue a project, change its scope or team, delay or cancel it, or move responsibility to another studio. A change in studio organization does not by itself establish that a particular game has been canceled. For a specific unreleased title, rely on a project-specific announcement rather than inferring its status from the acquisition or a general statement about the studio.

How to check what a particular acquisition means
- Read the deal announcement and transaction details. Identify which company, studios, IP, and other assets are included, and look for rights or assets excluded from the sale.
- Check regulatory decisions. If regulators reviewed the transaction, read the decision for the relevant geography and any conditions, remedies, or changes to the deal structure.
- Check the studio’s current organization. Look for dated company updates that confirm whether the team remains distinct, has a new remit, is being sold, or faces a proposed closure. Treat proposals as proposals until the company confirms an outcome.
- Check the specific game and service. Use the game’s current platform listings and the publisher’s or service operator’s announcements to verify availability, servers, updates, and support.
- Separate what is confirmed from what is expected. A buyer’s plan or promise at announcement is not proof of a later result; a rumor is not a confirmed project or employment decision.
