XREAL AURA and Meta VR Glasses both pair wearable glasses with a separate compute puck, but they take different approaches to what you see and how you interact. AURA is an optical-see-through XR system built around Android XR and Gemini; Meta’s glasses run Horizon OS and add eye tracking. Meta has announced the higher per-eye resolution and a firm US price, while AURA has the earlier expected launch window. As of October 7, 2026, both are announced products, not shipping devices.

What is the main difference between XREAL AURA and Meta VR Glasses?

AURA is designed to put digital content into your view while letting you see the real world through its optical-see-through display. Meta’s announcement presents its glasses as a Horizon OS device for media, games, work and calls, with eyes and hands as its primary interaction method. That difference in viewing approach matters more than the fact that both products look like glasses: they are not interchangeable versions of an ordinary portable screen.

Both need a connected compute puck, so neither is simply a self-contained pair of passive display glasses. XREAL describes AURA as a lightweight glasses system with a dedicated puck; Meta says its puck handles compute, battery and storage. The glasses form factor alone does not tell you how portable either full system will feel.

How do their displays compare?

Display detail XREAL AURA Meta VR Glasses
Display type Sony Micro-OLED with X Prism optics, according to XREAL’s 2026 specifications. Micro-OLED, according to Meta’s 2026 specifications.
Resolution per eye 1920 × 1200 pixels per eye, according to XREAL’s 2026 specifications. 2412 × 2288 pixels per eye, according to Meta Horizon OS Developers’ 2026 specifications.
Refresh rate Up to 120 Hz, according to XREAL’s 2026 specifications. 120 Hz, according to Meta Horizon OS Developers’ 2026 specifications.
Published field of view 70° FOV, according to XREAL’s 2026 specifications; the cited figure is not labeled horizontal or vertical. 70° horizontal and 66° vertical FOV, according to Meta Horizon OS Developers’ 2026 specifications.
Additional published figure Not stated in the cited XREAL specifications. 37 pixels per degree, according to Meta Horizon OS Developers’ 2026 specifications.

Meta publishes more pixels per eye, but that does not establish which product will look sharper or more convincing in use. Optics, fit, rendered content and other viewing conditions affect perceived quality; no controlled side-by-side image test is established here. The shared 70° figure is also not enough to predict immersion: AURA’s figure lacks a horizontal or vertical label in the cited specifications, and a single field-of-view number does not capture the whole viewing experience.

How do tracking and controls differ?

XREAL lists two world-facing tracking cameras, 6DoF spatial anchoring and hand tracking. Its listed inputs also include voice and a touchpad on the puck, plus support for Bluetooth keyboards, mice and game controllers. Those options suggest a system designed to support both spatial interactions and familiar peripherals.

Meta lists head, hand and eye tracking, with eyes and hands as the primary controls. Its developer documentation describes Meta VR Glasses as “controllerless by default.” Touch Plus controllers are supported but sold separately, so they are an option rather than a stated requirement. Meta says apps do not have access to camera-based face tracking.

These published lists describe different capabilities; they do not prove that the tracking implementations perform equally well. If eye tracking or using physical controllers is important to you, check the final product details and the specific apps you intend to use.

For either device, platform names and announced content do not guarantee that a particular app, service or feature will be available at launch in your region. Check the apps you rely on, especially if you plan to use the glasses for work or a specific media service.

What do we know about comfort, fit and battery?

XREAL says AURA’s optical-see-through frames weigh less than 95 g; that is a frames-only figure, not the weight of the connected system. Meta says its glasses weigh about 100 g and describes the puck separately. These figures are not a like-for-like measure of what you will carry or wear with each complete setup.

Fit information also differs. XREAL lists medium fit for 60–66 mm IPD and large fit for 66–72 mm IPD, plus electrochromic dimming and insertable prescription lenses. Meta lists S/M and M/L sizing and manual per-eye IPD adjustment from 56–70 mm. The availability, compatibility and cost of prescription options—and whether either frame fits a particular person—need confirmation from final product and retailer details.

Meta claims up to about three hours of continuous high-resolution media playback. That is Meta’s playback estimate, not a general runtime guarantee, and it does not establish how AURA will compare. No controlled comparison of comfort, battery endurance, latency or performance is available here.

Product Announced timing Announced price information
XREAL AURA XREAL expects a fall 2026 launch. XREAL says the base model will not exceed US$1,500 before applicable taxes. Final price and configuration remain pending.
Meta VR Glasses Meta announced a spring 2027 sale. Meta announced a price of $1,299.99 USD.

Meta’s announced price is below AURA’s stated maximum, but it is not a direct comparison with AURA’s final retail price: AURA’s ceiling is not its confirmed price. Both announced schedules and prices should be treated as subject to change, and regional pricing or availability is not established by these US-dollar figures.

XREAL’s US shop describes its Launch Credit offer as a reservation, not a preorder: pay $99 for $199 in credit toward AURA, subject to account and email limits and a stated 30-day redemption period after launch. The shop lists launch waves for the US, UK, Korea and Japan in fall 2026, with Europe shortly after. This offer and its regional details can change, so check the current shop terms before acting; a reservation is not confirmation of a final price or delivery date.

Which one should you choose?

Choose XREAL AURA if optical see-through and Android XR are your priorities

AURA is the closer match if you specifically want an optical-see-through system, Android XR with Gemini support, and the interaction options XREAL lists, including hands, voice and a puck touchpad. Its expected fall 2026 window is earlier than Meta’s announced spring 2027 sale. This is a feature-based preference, not a tested endorsement; the final price, configuration and real-world experience remain unconfirmed.

Choose Meta VR Glasses if you prioritize eye tracking, Horizon OS or the announced price

Meta may suit you better if its eye-and-hand interaction, Horizon OS experiences and higher published per-eye resolution align with what you plan to do. It has an announced price rather than AURA’s pending final price, and Touch Plus controllers are available separately if you want them. Its later announced sale window and manufacturer-stated media and content plans are important parts of that choice.

Wait for reviews if fit or real-world performance will decide it

If comfort, clarity, prescription fit, battery endurance, latency or price certainty is decisive, neither specification sheet settles the question. Wait for independent hands-on reviews and confirmed regional purchasing details before choosing. The published figures give useful points of comparison, but they are manufacturer specifications and announcements rather than a controlled head-to-head test.
