Dawn of War IV has not launched yet. As of October 7, 2026, its publisher lists a December 3, 2026 release for Windows PC via Steam, with Commander Edition players scheduled for early access on November 30. Until then, Company of Heroes 3 is the closer fit for tactical battlefield combat, while Homeworld: Deserts of Kharak offers science-fiction warfare built around fleets, terrain, and resource decisions.

At a glance: which RTS should you play?

Game Best fit Setting and focus Modes listed
Company of Heroes 3 Players who want tactical combat and strategic choices in a historical setting Mediterranean World War II theater; the Steam listing foregrounds combat and strategic choices Single-player, online PvP, and online co-op
Homeworld: Deserts of Kharak Players who want science fiction, campaign narrative, and fleet and resource strategy Ground-based sci-fi warfare; positioning, fleet composition, resources, and technology research Origin-story campaign and online multiplayer

These are preference-matched suggestions, not a universal ranking: the available product descriptions establish what each game offers, but do not establish which is better, how active its player base is, or how reviewers compare them.

Company of Heroes 3: for tactical historical warfare

Company of Heroes 3 is the natural pick if the appeal of Dawn of War is the pressure of making battlefield decisions and responding to changing fights, rather than the Warhammer 40,000 setting itself. Its Steam listing places the action in a Mediterranean World War II theater and emphasizes combat and strategic choices. It lists single-player, online PvP, and online co-op. The game was released on February 23, 2023, and Steam identifies Relic Entertainment as both developer and publisher.

Choose it when you want an RTS whose identity is historical battlefield tactics. It is not a substitute for Warhammer 40,000 lore or science-fiction factions; its value here is the adjacent emphasis on tactical combat.

The Stronghold Collection - PC
  • Stronghold - The original, award-winning castle sim that takes players through medieval Britain as they lead strategic military and economic expansion, defend against invaders, and conquer enemy castles.
  • Stronghold 2 - The King, having fled after the defeat of his own armies, is now attempting to rule his country from a secret location. Powerful barons are jostling for what is fast becoming a disintegrating kingdom, and it is up to you to stem the tides of their ambition and unite the land again under the King.
  • Stronghold Crusader and Stronghold Crusader Extreme - Journey to distant Arabian lands and lead a determined group of Crusaders. Relive the historic Crusades in four campaigns as Richard the Lionheart and Saladin, the Sultan of Syria. Stronghold Crusader Extreme adds 20 new missions, new buildings and larger armies of 10,000 troops.
  • Stronghold Legends - Play as epic leaders throughout history, including King Arthur and the forces of Camelot, Siegfried and Dietrich in the German Ice Campaign, and Vlad Dracul and his evil forces in Transylvania.

Homeworld: Deserts of Kharak: for sci-fi fleets and terrain

If you want to stay with science fiction, Homeworld: Deserts of Kharak is the closer thematic match. Steam describes it as “A ground-based RTS prequel to the classic Homeworld games.” Its origin-story campaign follows warfare across a desert landscape, with land and air fleets, resource management, technology research, and decisions about fleet composition. The listing also highlights terrain tactics such as seeking high ground and setting ambushes, and describes online multiplayer. It was released on January 20, 2016; Steam identifies Blackbird Interactive as its developer.

This is the stronger fit if you want a campaign and strategic choices about what forces to field and how to position them. Its setting is the Homeworld universe, not Warhammer 40,000, and its combat is framed around ground-based fleets rather than a shared franchise or setting with Dawn of War.

What to expect from Dawn of War IV

Deep Silver lists Dawn of War IV for Windows PC via Steam with a scheduled release date of December 3, 2026; Commander Edition players are scheduled for an early unlock on November 30. Those dates are future-facing and should be checked against the publisher’s page for any schedule change. The announcement presents the game as a return to the Warhammer 40,000 universe and real-time strategy. Warhammer Community describes the announced direction as returning to “mass-battle, base-building roots.”

The announcement also lists more than 70 campaign missions playable solo or with a friend, alongside Last Stand, Skirmish, and multiplayer. These are announced features, not a basis for judging how the finished game plays. If those announced elements are what you are waiting for, the two alternatives above offer different parts of the RTS experience in the meantime: historical tactical combat or science-fiction fleet strategy.
