Before buying a Best Buy open-box item, compare its condition with the listing, verify that essential accessories are included, test the functions that matter, and read the product-specific return and warranty terms. Best Buy says Outlet open-box items are tested or inspected, but condition, included items, coverage, and availability vary by product.
What does “open-box” mean at Best Buy?
Best Buy describes open-box products as customer returns or in-store display items. Its Outlet guide says each is tested or inspected for working order and physical appearance, then assigned a condition. That description does not establish that every item has been fully refurbished or has the same use history.
Best Buy uses three main open-box condition grades. The exact item listing matters because available grades and details such as packaging or included accessories can vary.

What should you inspect before paying?
Use the listing’s condition notes as a starting point, then inspect and test the item when that is practical. Suggested function checks below are buyer checks, not a claim that Best Buy performs each one as part of its inspection.
- Look over the exterior: Check the display, casing, visible surfaces, ports, buttons, hinges, and other parts relevant to the product. For an appliance, stick to visible areas and components you can safely check.
- Test core functions: When possible, power the item on and try the functions you expect to use. For example, check a screen and controls on a computer or TV, or verify basic operation on another device before leaving the store.
- Check model-specific accessories: Compare what is included with the manufacturer’s requirements. Depending on the item, essentials might include the correct charger, power cord, remote, stand, or proprietary cable.
- Ask about unclear listing details: If the grade or included items are not clear, get clarification before completing the purchase.
- Keep the listing and receipt: Save them so you can refer to the stated condition and purchase terms if an issue comes up.
How should missing accessories affect the price?
Open-box products may be missing parts or accessories. Before treating the discount as a saving, identify the exact replacement you need, confirm it is compatible with that model, and add its cost to the purchase price. A missing essential accessory can make an otherwise attractive price less useful; a missing nonessential item may matter less if you do not need it.

Compare the resulting total with the price of a new, refurbished, pre-owned, or differently graded open-box item. There is no universal discount percentage that makes an open-box purchase worthwhile; the right comparison depends on condition, contents, and coverage as well as price.

What return and warranty terms apply?
Best Buy says open-box products are covered by its Return & Exchange Promise and warranty coverage, and that many have the same manufacturer warranty as new items. The applicable terms can vary, so check the return and warranty information on the specific listing and the current policy before paying. Do not assume every item has an identical return window or manufacturer warranty.
