There is no single best FSR 4 preset for handheld gaming—and many handheld PCs with integrated Radeon graphics are not listed as compatible with AMD’s current FSR upscaling requirements. First confirm that both your GPU and game qualify. If they do, begin with the highest-quality in-game FSR preset that meets your own frame-rate target, then adjust one step at a time. No cited AMD material establishes a handheld preset that guarantees a particular frame rate or longer battery life.
Can your handheld run FSR 4?
Check compatibility before tuning. AMD’s current product overview calls its machine-learning upscaler “FSR Upscaling” and lists Radeon RX 7000 and RX 9000 series graphics. AMD’s SDK specifies discrete GPUs for FSR Upscaling 4.1.1: Radeon RX 7000 and RX 9000. Typical handheld PCs use integrated Radeon graphics, which these sources do not document as eligible for FSR 4 upscaling. A game displaying an “FSR 4” option does not by itself prove that the handheld’s GPU supports it.
Support can depend on how the game implements the feature. AMD documents native game integration and a driver-upgrade route for certain games using a signed FSR 3.1 DLL. That upgrade route requires DirectX 12; Vulkan and non-standard FSR 3.1 integrations are excluded. Do not infer eligibility simply because a title offers FSR 3. Check AMD’s current FSR Technologies overview and FSR SDK requirements alongside the game’s support information.

Which FSR preset should you choose?
For an eligible device and game, treat the in-game quality preset as a trade-off control: use the highest-quality option that still meets the frame-rate target you have chosen for that game. AMD advises selecting an FSR quality preset in the game’s graphics or video menu, but its documentation does not identify one preset as best for every handheld or title.

- Set your priority. Decide whether image detail or meeting a particular frame-rate target matters more to you. There is no universal handheld FPS target established by the cited sources.
- Start at the highest quality preset. Use the game’s FSR preset setting, then check performance in a repeatable scene.
- Step down only if needed. If the game does not meet your target, lower the preset one level and compare it in the same scene rather than changing several graphics options at once.
- Check more than the average frame rate. Look for stable performance as well as fine-detail changes, motion ghosting, flicker, and particle rendering. Keep the setting that best fits your priorities in that game.
This is a practical way to tune an eligible setup, not a benchmark-derived universal recommendation. AMD’s documentation does not publish handheld comparisons across FSR presets.
What should you expect from image quality?
AMD says FSR 4 improves fine detail and temporal stability, preserves particles better, and reduces ghosting on moving objects compared with FSR 3.1. These are AMD’s product claims, not independent handheld test results. The differences you see will depend on the game, scene, resolution, and settings. When comparing presets, use the same scene and pay particular attention to moving objects and fine details. A still image may not reveal the motion artifacts or stability differences you notice during play.
Will FSR 4 improve battery life or guarantee a frame rate?
No handheld-specific battery-life results or measured frame rates across FSR quality presets are provided in the cited AMD materials. FSR settings alone therefore cannot support a promise of longer play time or a specific FPS. Actual results depend on the game, device, GPU, resolution, power configuration, and other graphics settings; the sources do not quantify those effects for handhelds.

Should you use Radeon Super Resolution or frame generation too?
Keep Radeon Super Resolution off when using in-game FSR
Radeon Super Resolution (RSR) is a driver-based upscaler. AMD recommends disabling RSR when a game already supports in-game FSR, because combining the two can add processing and degrade image quality. See AMD’s Radeon Super Resolution guidance.
Do not confuse AFMF with FSR 4 upscaling
AMD lists Fluid Motion Frames (AFMF) support for some handheld systems with Radeon 700M or 800M integrated graphics. That is separate frame-generation support; it does not establish that those systems support FSR 4 upscaling. AMD documents AFMF configurations in its HYPR-RX Profiles overview, while the FSR SDK lists separate GPU requirements for upscaling and frame generation.

Why do menus still say “FSR 4”?
AMD’s current overview says FSR 4 has been renamed “FSR Upscaling” within the broader FSR “Redstone” suite, though a game’s menu may still use the FSR 4 label. For current compatibility, use AMD’s newer product overview and SDK rather than relying on release-era requirements. AMD’s earlier FSR 4 announcement described initial support as RDNA 4, Windows, and DirectX 12; that launch context does not replace the current GPU and SDK information.
