A black screen, frozen picture, or buffering wheel does not point to one definite cause. The problem may be the player, device, display connection, network, or access to the event. Work through the checks below in order: start with the app and device, then isolate the connection, display path, and account or event restrictions.
Start with the symptom, not a guess
If the golf stream is the only thing failing, checking event access and the streaming app is more useful than immediately replacing equipment. If several apps fail on one device, the device or network is more likely involved. These patterns help narrow the fault, but they do not prove a single cause.

Work through the fixes in order
1. Refresh or reopen the stream
Refresh the browser page, or force-close the streaming app and open it again. Close unnecessary apps and browser tabs that may be competing for device resources. ESPN and NBC Sports both recommend these as basic checks for stalled or poor playback (ESPN video playback troubleshooting; NBC Sports streaming troubleshooting).

Power down the TV, streaming box, phone, or computer, then restart it. Check that its operating system and streaming app are current and supported. If relaunching does not help, reinstalling the app is a reasonable next step. NBC also recommends restarting the modem or router (ESPN troubleshooting; NBC Sports FAQ).

3. Check the network path
Try another streaming app on the same device. If it also buffers or stops, check the device’s connection, how far it is from the router, other devices using the network, and whether the internet service is having trouble. On a phone or tablet using mobile data, ESPN recommends trying Wi-Fi instead of 3G, 4G, or 5G.
For a Wi-Fi-connected TV or streaming box, try a direct Ethernet connection to the modem or router if practical. NBC Sports recommends a wired connection as a way to improve stability when wireless playback is choppy or buffering; it is a diagnostic option, not a guaranteed fix (NBC Sports streaming troubleshooting). No golf-specific internet-speed threshold is established by these support sources, so avoid treating a generic speed number as a definitive test.

4. Check HDMI and display-related software
If audio plays but the picture is black, or the stream behaves differently on a TV than on a phone, check that HDMI cables and connections are secure. YouTube TV provides device-specific guidance for Roku HDCP errors and display settings; use the instructions for the affected device rather than applying a Roku setting to other hardware (YouTube TV playback troubleshooting).
ESPN notes that content filters, antivirus software, proxy accelerators, or pop-up blockers can prevent video from displaying. NBC likewise suggests disabling or removing ad blockers or software that may interfere with streaming. If one of these tools is installed, temporarily disable it only as a diagnostic test, then restore it if it is not the cause (ESPN black-screen guidance; NBC Sports FAQ).

5. Verify that you can watch this event
If other programs work but the golf event does not, check whether the service offers that event and whether your subscription or TV provider includes the channel. Provider-linked NBC content may require a listed provider subscription, a compatible location or network, and a current sign-in; sign out and link or authenticate the provider again if access may have expired (NBC Sports FAQ).
Sports restrictions can also vary by location, platform, and partner rights on YouTube TV. A single-event failure may therefore be an availability or eligibility issue rather than a connection fault (YouTube TV viewing restrictions).

6. Compare another app and device
Try a different app on the same device, then try the same stream on another device supported by the service. If only one service fails, contact that service’s support after its troubleshooting steps. If multiple apps fail on one device, device or network support is a more relevant next contact. NBC distinguishes problems with its digital apps from traditional cable, satellite, or over-the-air TV reception, which should be taken to the relevant TV provider, affiliate, or retailer (ESPN troubleshooting; NBC Sports FAQ).

- One event fails, but other streams work: Check whether the event is offered and whether your account, provider, location, and device qualify.
- One app fails, but other apps work: Focus on that app’s restart, update, reinstall, or sign-in steps.
- Several apps fail on one device: Check the device’s support status and connection, then test a second device.
- Playback improves over Ethernet: The Wi-Fi path may be contributing; a wired connection is useful evidence, not proof of a particular router fault.
