Choose a desktop USB-C charger by matching its actual output on the port you will use to your device maker’s charging requirements—not by picking the largest wattage printed on the box. Check whether the device requires USB Power Delivery (USB PD), whether other connected devices reduce the laptop port’s output, and whether your cable supports the selected power level.
Start with the device’s charging requirements
Find the exact model’s charging instructions or specifications. Record the required voltage, current, and wattage, and check whether the maker specifies USB PD or a particular PD mode. Follow the stated full-use input or adapter recommendation, especially for a laptop. Do not assume that the wattage of its original adapter is also supported by its USB-C port: confirm that the port accepts charging and supports the required input.
Some devices may charge over USB-C only under particular conditions, or USB-C may not be their primary input. If the manufacturer recommends the original adapter or limits USB-C charging, treat that guidance as the boundary rather than assuming a more powerful charger will overcome it.

A laptop example: one model is not a universal rule
For the ThinkBook 16p Gen 4, Lenovo says the USB-C source should provide at least 20 V and 2.25 A to provide power. Its guidance distinguishes charging while the computer is asleep or powered off from charging more fully. Those figures apply to that model; they are not a minimum threshold for all laptops. Check USB PD support and the output of the port you’ll use
USB-C describes the connector, not a guaranteed charging standard or power level. Microsoft notes that a USB-C system can support 5 V at 3 A (15 W) without USB PD; PD support is optional. A charger’s USB-C port must explicitly list USB PD output if your device requires PD. See Microsoft’s USB Type-C FAQ.
USB PD negotiates power between the source and the device. USB-IF says devices can take the power they require, while STMicroelectronics describes a PD source starting in 5 V mode and negotiating a suitable charging mode with the device. A higher-rated compatible PD charger does not simply force its full rated output into a device. Compatibility still depends on the voltage and power modes both sides support. Read the charger’s specification for the individual port you plan to use, including its available voltage and current—not just the charger’s headline maximum. If the device maker specifies a full-use input, select a port that meets it. A lower-output USB-C source may charge a laptop slowly, work only while it is asleep or powered off, or fail to power it. Microsoft lists insufficient output, incompatibility, and a port that does not support charging among reasons Windows may show a slow-charging notice.
Account for shared output when several ports are occupied
On a multiport desktop charger, the total advertised wattage does not necessarily remain available to every port at once. Check the manufacturer’s port-allocation table for the exact combination of ports you expect to use—for example, laptop plus phone—and confirm that the laptop port still meets the device’s requirement under that load. USB PD supports power management across connected devices, but how a particular charger divides output is model-specific.

When comparing chargers that meet the device’s minimum, compare the output per port, the reduced output under simultaneous use, and whether the unit can cover the other devices you plan to connect. Use the product’s official output table rather than assuming an unlisted port combination will retain the full rating.
Match the cable to the output
The cable is part of the charging path. STMicroelectronics says a specific cable is required to deliver more than 3 A or more than 20 V. Check the cable’s rated current and voltage against the charger’s selected output and the device’s requirements; do not assume every USB-C cable supports every PD level.

Understand wattage ceilings without overbuying by default
USB PD is capable of flexible power delivery alongside data over one cable. USB-IF says the standard can support up to 240 W. Its overview identifies fixed voltages of 28 V, 36 V, and 48 V for levels up to 140 W, 180 W, and 240 W, respectively; devices can also request an intermediate voltage within the available range. These are standards capabilities, not a recommendation that an ordinary laptop or desktop charging setup needs 240 W.

The supported modes of a particular device and charger matter more than a connector shape or a PD-version label by itself. Check both products’ documentation to verify the required output.

Choose a charger approved for where you’ll use it
Use a charger with safety approval or certification appropriate to the country where it will operate. Applicable marks and requirements differ by jurisdiction; Lenovo’s guidance gives China, Europe, and North America as examples and advises choosing a safety-approved or certified third-party charger. Check local requirements and the charger’s own documentation rather than treating one region’s marks as universal.
