Before buying an Xbox Series X or Series S, check whether your games are digital or on disc, confirm that the titles you care about are backward compatible, and compare the exact console’s storage capacity. A disc-drive Series X is the direct choice if you need to play physical games; Series S is all-digital. For extra space, the dedicated expansion card is designed to match internal SSD performance, while USB storage serves a different role.
Start with your existing games: discs or digital purchases?
Make a short list of the games you want to keep playing and note how you own each one: digital purchase, Xbox One disc, or older Xbox 360 or original Xbox disc. Then check the important titles individually in Xbox’s backward-compatible games catalog. Xbox says Series X|S supports select titles from those earlier generations, not every game released for them; availability and some features vary by title.
- Digital games: Eligible titles you own appear in the console’s “Ready to Install” section.
- Supported discs: On a disc-drive Series X, insert the disc to download a supported game. The disc must remain in the drive to play it.
- Series S: It has no disc drive, so you cannot use physical game discs directly on it.
If you own disc games and want to play them as discs, choose a disc-drive Series X configuration and verify each game’s compatibility. A digital purchase of the same title may be a separate option, but do not assume an existing disc automatically gives you a digital copy.

A note for original Xbox games
Xbox says original Xbox games played through backward compatibility do not support legacy Xbox Live services such as online multiplayer or in-game marketplaces. Supported offline multiplayer modes may still work. Original Xbox games do not gain Xbox achievements, and their saves do not transfer to Series X|S.

Compare exact console configurations, not just the X or S name
Xbox’s comparison page currently shows several configurations, but options and pricing vary by market. Treat the list as a guide to what Xbox displays, not a promise that every version is sold where you live.
| Console configuration shown by Xbox | Drive | Listed capacity | Xbox’s display description |
|---|---|---|---|
| Series X Carbon Black | Disc drive | 1TB | Native 4K |
| Series X Robot White | All-digital | 1TB | Native 4K |
| Series X Galaxy Black | Disc drive | 2TB | Native 4K |
| Series S | All-digital | 512GB or 1TB | Designed for 1440p, with upscaling to 4K |
These are manufacturer descriptions, not a guarantee of what every game will output on every screen. Xbox lists up to 120 FPS for supported content; achieving that depends on the game and a compatible display. Check your target games and television or monitor rather than treating resolution or frame rate as a universal result.

When comparing local listings, confirm the drive type and capacity on the specific SKU. A 1TB Series X configuration, for example, may be all-digital or have a disc drive; the family name alone does not tell you which one it is.

Choose storage based on how you want to use it
All the listed Series X|S configurations support Xbox’s dedicated Storage Expansion Card. Xbox describes it as matching the console’s custom internal SSD experience and performance. The card plugs into the rear expansion port and can be selected as an install destination.

Xbox also documents USB 3.1 external HDD support. USB storage can add space, but it is not the same as the dedicated expansion card: do not assume every game can run from an ordinary USB drive. Check the requirements for the particular game before planning to play it from USB. Xbox says Quick Resume works with internal storage, an expansion card, or USB external storage.
- Choose the expansion card if you want added game storage designed to deliver internal-SSD-matched performance.
- Consider USB storage if you want additional external storage, while checking which games can run from it and which may need to be moved to faster storage.
- Compare internal capacity first if you would rather avoid buying an accessory immediately. The configurations Xbox lists range from 512GB to 2TB.
Xbox Wire’s October 21, 2021 announcement discussed 512GB, 1TB, and 2TB card capacities. That is a historical product announcement, not confirmation that every capacity or model is currently available in your region; check current listings before buying.

Understand the 2026 disc-to-digital feature before relying on it
In an August 26, 2026 Xbox Wire announcement, Xbox said that most Xbox One and Xbox Series X disc games support claiming a digital entitlement by inserting a supported disc into an Xbox One or Series X console and launching the game. Xbox said the feature began with thousands of eligible titles, but not every disc game was included. The physical disc continues to work, and the announcement does not identify Series S as a console for claiming the entitlement.
This is a title-dependent feature, not universal disc conversion and not a substitute for a disc drive when you want to play discs normally. Check Xbox’s announcement and instructions for eligibility before making a purchase decision based on it.

Use this checklist before checkout
- Inventory your library: Mark the games you own as digital or disc-based, and identify the specific older titles you need to keep playing.
- Check compatibility: Search important Xbox One, Xbox 360, and original Xbox titles in the official catalog.
- Pick the drive type: If you need to play supported physical discs, choose a disc-drive Series X; Series S is all-digital.

- Confirm the exact SKU and capacity: Check the local listing for drive type, storage size, and regional availability rather than assuming all Series X or Series S models are alike.
- Plan extra storage: Decide whether you need the SSD-performance-matched expansion card or USB storage for additional supported use.
- Compare the local offer: Check current price, stock, and retailer return terms for the exact configuration you intend to buy.
