Coinbase Exchange and Deribit are not two interchangeable crypto derivatives venues. Coinbase Exchange is Coinbase’s spot-trading venue; Deribit is a derivatives-focused platform that also offers spot markets. Separately, Coinbase completed the migration of International Exchange derivatives infrastructure to Deribit on October 1, 2026, while Coinbase app users continue to access perpetuals through the Coinbase app or website. Which route fits depends on the instrument you want, your account eligibility, and the full cost of trading—not just the headline fee rate.
This comparison reflects official information checked October 7, 2026. Product availability and fees can change.
What is the difference between Coinbase Exchange and Deribit?
Coinbase Exchange refers here to Coinbase’s spot exchange and its published spot-trading fee schedule. Deribit is a separate platform with crypto options, futures, perpetuals, and spot markets. The names can be confusing because Coinbase’s International Exchange derivatives infrastructure was integrated with Deribit: Coinbase says that integration was completed on October 1, 2026. That change does not make Coinbase Exchange spot trading and Deribit derivatives the same product or fee schedule.
Coinbase retail users continue to access perpetuals in the Coinbase app or on Coinbase.com, with Deribit infrastructure powering the migrated derivatives experience. Existing Deribit users continue to use Deribit. Institutional International Exchange accounts, positions, and balances migrated to the combined platform; institutional API users should consult Coinbase’s integration overview and institutional FAQs for the new gateway and migration details.

Which products are available?
The product set depends on which platform and access path you mean. The table distinguishes Deribit’s listed product categories from Coinbase’s stated access and rollout plans.
| Platform or access path | Products described in official materials | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Deribit | Inverse BTC and ETH options, futures, and perpetuals; USDC-settled options, futures, and perpetuals for several altcoins; spot markets, including some yield-bearing assets and gold; and DVOL futures linked to Deribit’s volatility index. | Confirm the exact instrument and settlement type in the current market list and your logged-in account. Deribit’s overview describes its product range. |
| Coinbase app or website | Spot trading and perpetuals. Coinbase also describes Deribit dated futures for eligible users and options access rolling out to eligible users. | Options access is described as a rollout, not a guarantee that it is available to every account. Product access can vary by account and jurisdiction. |
| Coinbase International Exchange / Deribit-powered infrastructure | Coinbase announced that 125+ additional perpetual contracts are being added to Deribit, including equity- and commodity-linked products. | This is Coinbase’s announced expansion, not an independently verified count of markets currently live. Check the platform’s live listings. |
Deribit also routes selected spot pairs on its interface to Coinbase Exchange liquidity. Those markets remain accessible through Deribit, but they are not native Deribit spot-book pairs and have different fees. Pair routing can change; check the current spot instrument listing.

How do the published fees compare?
The figures below are published standard rates, not a personalized quote. One basis point (bp) is 0.01%. Coinbase’s schedule is for Coinbase Exchange spot trading outside its Liquidity Program; Deribit’s schedule separates derivatives from spot and distinguishes routed Coinbase Exchange pairs from native Deribit spot pairs.
| Product and venue | Maker fee | Taker fee | Qualification |
|---|---|---|---|
| Deribit perpetuals and futures | 1.5 bps | 3.5 bps | Standard rates; Deribit’s fee page was updated September 25, 2026. |
| Deribit options | 3 bps | 3 bps | Standard rates, capped at 12.5% of the option premium. |
| Deribit spot pairs routed to Coinbase Exchange | 2 bps | 5 bps | Applies to routed pairs on Deribit, not all Coinbase Exchange spot trading. |
| Native Deribit spot-book pairs | 0% | 0% | Deribit’s published fee treatment for native spot-book pairs. |
| Coinbase Exchange spot, $0K–$10K volume tier | 40 bps | 60 bps | Published standard fee tier outside the Liquidity Program. |
| Coinbase Exchange spot, $400M+ volume tier | 0 bps | 4 bps | Published standard fee tier outside the Liquidity Program. |
Coinbase Exchange lists separate taker pricing for stable pairs and says stable-pair maker fees are 0.00%; classifications and peg behavior matter. Consult the live Coinbase Exchange fee schedule for the applicable pair and tier. These Coinbase spot rates do not describe Coinbase app perpetuals.

- BUILT FOR YOUR MARKET, FUTURES, STOCKS, FOREX, OPTIONS & CRYPTO: 4X is a mindset and process journal, not a strategy tool tied to one instrument. The plan, the trade log, the deep dive and the weekly review work the same whether you trade ES, EURUSD, SPY or BTC. Traders use it across all five markets every day.
- THE 2026 EDITION, REBUILT FROM TRADER FEEDBACK: Same trusted system, better in every way. An extra daily page for more room to log the session. Weekly reviews now grouped with each week's trades, so no more flipping back and forth. Crisp, darker print that's easy on the eyes after hours on a screen. A Quick-Start QR that scans straight to step-by-step instructions.
- NOT A NOTEBOOK, A COMPLETE 12-WEEK SYSTEM: Start with a one-time 9-part Trading Plan (your market, setups, risk rules and discipline checklist). Then twelve identical weeks: five Daily Logs, five Deep Dive trade pages, and a two-page Weekly Review. 189 guided pages, roughly 80 trades. Guided prompts walk you through every step. You never stare at a blank page.
- RATE YOUR EXECUTION, NOT YOUR RESULT: Your platform tracks the P&L. Nothing tracks the why. Log energy, sleep and mindset before the open; grade every trade A to F on whether you followed your plan, not on whether it won; then face the pattern every weekend with START / STOP / IMPROVE / CONTINUE. That review habit is the edge. You're 42% more likely to hit a goal you've written down.
- BUILT TO LAST, ARRIVES GIFT-READY: Vegan-leather hardcover, 100gsm bleed-resistant paper, two ribbon markers and an elastic closure band. Bound to lay flat so you're not fighting the spine while you write. 189 pages, 5.75" x 8.5", carries in a bag. Ships in a premium gift box: the gift every trader in your life actually wants.
Why the lowest headline rate may not be your actual cost
- Your tier matters. Deribit offers VIP pricing based on equity or rolling 30-day volume. For example, VIP 1 requires either $100,000 USDC equity or $250,000 total equity. Volume tiers use separate futures and options thresholds; Deribit says the highest VIP level reached for either applies to both product types. Spot volume does not count toward those volume thresholds.
- Order execution matters. Maker/taker fees depend on how an order executes; placing a limit order does not automatically make you a maker on Deribit.
- Options have a premium cap and settlement costs. The options fee cap does not remove the need to account for expiry and settlement charges under the applicable terms.
- Derivatives can add other costs. Include funding for perpetuals, delivery or settlement costs for expiring contracts, and liquidation terms where relevant. Deribit lists an additional 1% total liquidation fee for BTC, ETH, and USDC futures/perpetuals, and caps total options liquidation fees at 25% of option value.
- Withdrawals are separate. Deribit says deposits and transfers between subaccounts are free, while withdrawal charges vary by currency and network; third-party deposit services may charge their own fees.
Deribit’s current fee details and tier rules are on its fees page. Check the terms for the specific instrument and account before placing a trade.
Who is each platform or access path for?
Choose Coinbase Exchange when your focus is Coinbase spot trading
Coinbase Exchange is the relevant comparison when you want its spot order book and published maker/taker tiers. Compare the fee tier that applies to your account and pair rather than treating Coinbase Exchange’s rates as a general Coinbase fee schedule.
Consider Deribit when you need its derivatives range
Deribit is the more directly relevant venue if your requirements include its listed crypto options, inverse or USDC-settled derivatives, DVOL futures, or its derivatives fee tiers. Check the exact contract, collateral and settlement terms, and account access before comparing costs.
Existing Coinbase perpetuals users can keep the familiar app workflow
Coinbase says retail users continue to access perpetuals in the Coinbase app or website after the infrastructure migration. The underlying venue infrastructure changed; that does not establish that every contract, fee, or market-data detail is identical for every account. Check the current product and fee information in your account.

Institutional and API users should verify migration details
For institutional users, the integration affects International Exchange account access and API workflows. Coinbase says accounts, positions, and balances migrated and directs API users to the new Deribit-powered gateway. Use Coinbase’s migration guidance before updating integrations or market-data connections.

- Name the exact instrument. Distinguish Coinbase Exchange spot, a native Deribit spot pair, a Deribit-routed Coinbase Exchange spot pair, and a perpetual, dated future, or option accessed through Coinbase or Deribit.
- Confirm access first. Check the logged-in product list, account type, onboarding requirements, and jurisdictional eligibility. Coinbase’s FAQ states: “Products and services are available only to eligible users in supported jurisdictions, and are subject to applicable eligibility and onboarding requirements.” Availability may change.
- Apply the correct fee tier and order behavior. Compare the maker or taker rate that fits how the order is expected to execute, plus any volume or equity tier your account actually qualifies for.
- Add costs beyond the trading fee. For derivatives, review funding, expiry or delivery, settlement, liquidation, and withdrawal terms; for options, include the premium-based fee cap and relevant settlement charges.
- Compare the workflow you will use. Retail app access, Deribit’s own interface, and institutional API access are distinct paths. Confirm current endpoints, market data, and available products for your use case.
There is no universal “cheapest” winner in these schedules: they cover different products, venues, and account tiers. A meaningful comparison starts with the same instrument and order behavior, then includes the costs and access conditions that apply to your account.
