A large TV is usually the better fit for a bright, multipurpose room, everyday viewing, or competitive gaming. A projector is usually the better fit for a room where you can control light and want a cinematic image much larger than a typical TV. For gaming, compare the exact resolution, refresh rate, and picture mode you will use—not an isolated latency number.
Choose for your room and how you watch
| Your priority or room | Usually the better fit | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Sunny room, uncovered windows, or lights on | Large TV | A TV is generally more consistent when the room is bright; ambient light can wash out projected blacks and reduce the image’s impact. XGIMI’s comparison and LG’s guide explain the trade-off. |
| Movie nights in a dark or controllable room | Projector | Its defining advantage is scale: a very large image can make films feel more immersive. |
| Competitive shooters, fighting games, or PC gaming | Usually a TV, after checking the models | Responsiveness and high refresh rates may matter most. Compare measured or rated latency at the resolution and refresh rate you actually play. |
| Couch co-op, racing, or cinematic single-player games on a huge image | Projector may suit you | A large shared picture can matter more than esports-level responsiveness, provided the chosen projector’s gaming mode meets your needs. |
| Simple setup and reliable all-day viewing | Large TV | A TV typically avoids projector placement, focus, alignment, screen, and room-light planning. |
These are practical tendencies, not guarantees. Model performance, image size, viewing distance, and room conditions can change the result.
Movies: image size versus brightness and blacks
Why a projector can feel more cinematic
Projection makes very large images practical. Optoma says its UHZ55 can produce an image up to 300 inches, but that is a manufacturer maximum, not a recommended size for every room; available space and ambient light affect what works. Optoma’s UHZ55 product page lists the claim.

Image size and brightness have to be considered together: spreading a projector’s light over a larger image lowers screen luminance. A dark or controllable room helps preserve contrast and impact. XGIMI’s comparison describes this relationship.

Why a TV is often stronger in a bright room
A TV panel generally has an easier path to bright HDR and consistent dark blacks because it does not spread light across a reflective projection surface. Ambient light and room reflections can make projected blacks look brighter. Actual results vary by model and environment; a projector’s brightness and an ambient-light-rejecting (ALR) screen may help, but neither makes projection independent of room light. LG’s guide and XGIMI’s comparison discuss these constraints.
Gaming: compare latency under the same conditions
Input lag depends on the signal timing and display mode. A number quoted at 1080p/240Hz does not describe performance at 4K/60Hz. Check whether the figure is manufacturer-rated or independently measured, and whether Game or Fast mode—and reduced image processing—is required.

What the published figures do and do not show
Optoma rates its UHZ55 at 16.7 ms for 4K/60Hz and 4 ms for 1080p/240Hz. Those figures apply to different operating modes and are manufacturer-rated, not a head-to-head comparison with a TV. Optoma’s product page positions the model for gaming as well as home entertainment.

These are not independent measurements and should not be generalized to other projectors. XGIMI’s comparison gives the figures.

How to read independent input-lag testing
RTINGS describes measuring with photodiodes at screen center and averaging repeated readings; its tests generally use Game or Fast mode with extra processing off. Its 4K/60Hz, 1080p/120Hz, and maximum-refresh measurements represent different use cases, so compare the result that matches your setup. RTINGS also notes that most current projectors do not display true 4K at 120Hz, even when they accept a 4K/120 input; this is not a statement about every projector. Its method’s measurement floor is 8.33 ms at 60Hz and 4.17 ms at 120Hz, not universal latency figures. RTINGS’ projector input-lag test explanation details the procedure.
For competitive play, verify supported resolution and refresh rate as well as latency. For casual or cinematic games, a projector may be a good fit if its mode and timing support the way you play.

Setup: account for placement, screen, and light
A projector’s real setup includes more than the unit. Check throw distance or placement, cable routing, focus, image alignment, and whether the wall is suitable or a screen is needed. A screen can provide a planned, even image surface when a wall is uneven; an ALR screen may help in some brighter rooms, but screen choice depends on the projector, throw geometry, viewing position, and lighting. Ultra-short-throw models reduce distance constraints, but they still depend on the screen and room.
