Choose a retro handheld if you value portability and convenient access to the games it supports. Choose original hardware if you want to play on the original console with its cartridges and controllers. Neither option is automatically better: the right choice depends on the specific games you want and what you value about playing them.
How to decide
Start with the games you want to play, then compare how each option provides access to them. A handheld is only useful for your purpose if it supports the titles you care about; original hardware requires the relevant console and compatible games. Also weigh portability, any subscription or game costs, and the condition and authenticity of the device.
| Your priority | Better starting point | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Portable convenience | A retro handheld or a handheld-capable official platform | Confirm that the specific games you want are supported and available under the platform’s terms. |
| Particular games | Whichever option legally supports those titles | Check the current official catalog or original-console compatibility before buying; availability is not universal. |
| Original cartridges and console experience | Authentic original hardware | Verify the console, game, and accessories are compatible and in suitable condition. |
| Simple official access to selected classics | Nintendo Switch with the relevant Nintendo Switch Online membership | The libraries are curated, membership is required, and continued access depends on an active membership. |
| Lowest long-term cost | Compare the specific options | Include device price, games, condition, and recurring membership costs. There is no established universal cheapest choice. |
Choose a retro handheld for portable convenience
A retro handheld can make sense when you want to play away from a television or prefer a compact device. But “retro handheld” covers different products and game libraries; the label alone does not tell you which titles a device supports or how well it runs them. Check support for your exact games rather than assuming a device covers an entire console generation.
If you want an official Nintendo option, Nintendo Switch supports handheld mode for its Game Boy Classics software. Nintendo describes that software as a curated library and lists features including suspend points and Game Boy, Game Boy Pocket, and Game Boy Color screen styles. The software page gives a release date of February 8, 2023; that date is not a guarantee that the catalog or terms are unchanged today. Check the current Game Boy Classics page for the available games and details.

Understand Nintendo Switch Online access
Nintendo says access to its classic-game libraries requires an active Nintendo Switch Online membership. The standard membership includes selected NES, Super NES, and Game Boy libraries. Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack provides access to additional selected libraries, including Nintendo 64, SEGA Genesis, and Game Boy Advance. Access continues while the relevant membership remains active; it is not the same as owning every game outright. See Nintendo’s support page for classic games and verify current regional availability, tiers, and catalog details before subscribing.
This is a useful route if the games you want are in the catalog and you are comfortable with membership-based access. It is not a substitute for every retro game, a dedicated retro handheld, or original hardware.

Choose original hardware for cartridges and the original system
Original hardware is the natural starting point if playing on the original console, using compatible cartridges, or using its controllers is central to what you want. That preference is about the experience and setup—not proof that original hardware is always more accurate, responsive, reliable, or durable than a handheld. The evidence here does not establish a universal performance comparison.

If authenticity matters, be cautious about devices advertised with large collections of preinstalled games. Check licensing and product claims
Nintendo says licensed gaming accessories and peripherals carry its Official Nintendo Licensed Product Seal, and warns that unlicensed accessories may have compatibility problems. That guidance applies to Nintendo products; it should not be treated as a universal certification system for other brands. For accessories, check the manufacturer’s compatibility information and the seller’s return policy. See Nintendo’s consumer guidance.
Nintendo describes emulators as “software programs that are designed to allow another piece of software to run on a device it was not originally created for.” Its emulator guidance also discusses unauthorized emulator use and piracy from Nintendo’s intellectual-property perspective. That is Nintendo’s position, not a jurisdiction-by-jurisdiction legal analysis. Read Nintendo’s emulator guidance and legal information for its stated position.

Compare the real trade-offs before buying
- Games: Make a list of the exact titles you want, then verify that the chosen device or official subscription currently supports them.
- Portability: Decide whether playing on the go is important enough to outweigh the appeal of a console-and-cartridge setup.
- Access and cost: Compare the device and game costs with any recurring membership. No consistent price evidence establishes which route costs less over time.
- Condition and authenticity: For used hardware, check condition, seller reputation, return policy, region compatibility, and whether games are genuine.
- Performance: Look for evidence about the particular device and games you are considering. Broad claims about accuracy, lag, screen quality, battery life, or durability cannot be made from the platform category alone.
