Giant lemurs did not all disappear at once, and the evidence does not show that cattle alone caused their extinction. A 2026 study places the earliest documented livestock in Madagascar’s interior about 1,200 years ago, amid a longer period of staggered megafaunal declines. The timing makes livestock competition a plausible part of the story, alongside human activity, vegetation change and climate—not a settled, single-cause verdict.
How long did giant lemurs survive?
Madagascar’s extinct lemurs had different last-known dates. A 1995 study reported radiocarbon dates for two species, while a separate stratigraphic study suggests that some giant lemurs may have persisted in remote areas until perhaps the 17th century or later. These findings are not a single island-wide extinction date.
| Species or group | What the evidence reports |
|---|---|
| Babakotia radofilai | Simons and colleagues’ 1995 study reported a date of 4,400 ± 60 radiocarbon years BP. |
| Archaeolemur | Simons and colleagues’ 1995 study reported a date of 1,020 ± 50 radiocarbon years BP. |
| Some giant lemurs in remote areas | A stratigraphic study suggests they may have persisted until perhaps the 17th century or later; the claim concerns remote areas, not every species or the whole island. |
In radiocarbon studies, BP means “before present,” conventionally counted from 1950. A calibrated BP date has been adjusted to account for changes in atmospheric radiocarbon; it should not be treated as interchangeable with an uncalibrated radiocarbon BP date.
When did cattle and other livestock reach Madagascar’s interior?
Hixon and colleagues’ 2026 study identifies the earliest documented bovid presence in Madagascar’s interior at about 1,200 years ago. The authors interpret this evidence as probably reflecting livestock spreading rapidly across the island before the start of the past millennium. “Earliest documented” describes the evidence found so far; it does not establish the exact date livestock first arrived.

The study analyzed stable carbon and nitrogen isotope data from 126 cattle, sheep and goat specimens. Of those, 94 were directly radiocarbon-dated. The dataset draws on more than 100 bovid bones from 23 sites across Madagascar. These specimens help trace livestock presence and changing diets; they do not directly record a cattle encounter with a particular lemur species.
Does the timeline show that cattle caused the extinctions?
No. Chronology can show that livestock and extinct native herbivores overlapped in a place and period, but overlap alone does not demonstrate that one caused the other’s decline.

A 2021 study found a brief overlap in southwest Madagascar between introduced livestock and extinct endemic herbivores around 1,000–800 calibrated years BP. That result is geographically specific: it does not show that every giant lemur across Madagascar encountered livestock at the same time. Its calibrated dates also should not be directly compared with uncalibrated radiocarbon dates as if they used the same scale.

It suggests that livestock diets changed over time, including about 10% more carbon from some combination of C4 grasses or CAM succulents. That is an isotope-based inference about carbon sources, not a measurement that 10% more of an animal’s diet by mass came from those plants.

What ecological changes could have contributed?
Competition is one plausible mechanism: introduced grazing animals could have used plant resources also needed by native large herbivores. But the isotope result does not establish that cattle simply ate “the lemurs’ food.” Hixon and colleagues’ abstract allows for several interacting explanations involving livestock diet, climate, vegetation and the abundance of native herbivores.
| Possible factor | What the evidence supports | What it does not establish |
|---|---|---|
| Livestock competition | Introduced and endemic herbivores briefly overlapped in southwest Madagascar around 1,000–800 calibrated years BP, according to the 2021 study. | The overlap does not prove direct competition or show that it occurred across the island. |
| Vegetation and diet change | The 2026 isotope analysis indicates a change in livestock carbon sources, including about 10% more carbon from some combination of C4 grasses or CAM succulents. | It does not identify a single plant source or show that livestock displaced lemurs from a specific food. |
| Human activity and hunting | The timing of livestock and megafaunal extinctions, considered alongside estimates of earlier human arrival, suggests hunting alone may not explain the extinctions. Hixon co-lead Sean Hixon made this point in an Oregon State University account of the study. | That comparison does not rule out hunting or quantify its contribution. |
| Climate and other environmental change | The 2026 study identifies climate and vegetation among possible interacting mechanisms. | The available findings do not isolate their effects from livestock, human activity or changes in native-herbivore abundance. |
Why the simple “cattle did it” story falls short
The evidence differs by species, location and kind of measurement. Lemur last-occurrence dates do not all match the livestock chronology; the clearest reported livestock–native-herbivore overlap is from southwest Madagascar; and isotope data reveal dietary patterns rather than the cause of a species’ extinction. The authors of the 2026 study and its co-lead author Leanne Phelps say that causal relationships and differences among Madagascar’s landscapes need further study.

The strongest supported account is therefore one of staggered losses amid ecological and human change. Livestock arrived late enough to be a credible pressure in some places, but the evidence does not establish cattle as the sole cause—or show that every giant lemur population disappeared after cattle arrived.
