For Captain Tsubasa: Ace’s Dream League, there is no verified universal best formation in the available current guidance. Start with the strongest players you own, place them where their positions and skills fit, and use Auto-Deploy as a baseline—not a final verdict. Then adjust the lineup to suit your available players and whether you are building an offensive or defensive team.

Which mode uses formations?

Formation strategy applies to Dream League, the 11v11 mode. Ace Showdown is a separate 5v5 mode focused on real-time actions, so Dream League formation advice should not be treated as a prescription for Ace Showdown. The official App Store listing distinguishes the modes and describes Dream League as emphasizing strategic formations.

Is there a single best Dream League formation?

No formation ranking or matchup-tested counter is established by the current sources. In particular, there is not enough evidence to recommend a named shape such as 4-3-3 as the best choice for every account. Treat formation choice as a lineup-building decision: choose a shape that can field your strongest suitable players in their natural roles, then adjust it to your lineup’s needs.

Begin with Auto-Deploy if it is available in your current game version, then inspect the result. Game guidance describes using players in their ideal positions for compatibility, and describes Dream League lineup tools including player replacement, auto-deployment, formation selection, and saving. Exact labels and screens can change, so follow the current in-game interface rather than relying on an older menu path.

How to build a Dream League lineup

  1. Start with the mode and lineup purpose. Open Dream League and decide whether you are setting up an offensive or defensive lineup, if both options are offered in your current version.
  2. Use Auto-Deploy as a first pass. Review the suggested players and formation instead of assuming the automatic choice is optimal.
  3. Check position fit. Keep players in their listed FW, MF, DF, or GK roles where possible. Replace a poor fit with a suitable player you own rather than choosing solely by overall tier.
  4. Match skills to jobs. Consider whether the lineup needs ball progression, passing, shooting, interception, or defensive coverage, then place players whose described abilities support those roles.
  5. Account for development. The official listing notes that different development paths for the same player can affect on-field performance and skill strategies. Judge the version of the player you have built, not just the character name.
  6. Save and review. Save the formation after manual edits and reassess it when your roster or player development changes.

Which top players fit each position?

Pocket Gamer’s tier list updated October 5, 2026, for version 1.9.0 places S-tier players across the major positions. It is an editorial ranking that considers stats, skills, and available options—not official game data or proof that a player will be best on every account. Use it as a dated shortlist, then confirm each player’s current role and rarity in the list or your in-game roster.

Position Examples listed in S tier How to use the list
FW Roberto, Masao Tachibana, Shun Nitta, Napoleon, Shinji Sanada (SR), Kojiro Hyuga Compare the forward’s role and skills with the scoring or attacking job your lineup needs.
MF Jun Misugi, Kazuo Tachibana, Hanji Urabe, Taro Misaki, Kaltz, Tsubasa Ozora, Takeshi Sawada, Hikaru Matsuyama Build around the midfield mix you need, such as creation, ball progression, interception, or scoring support.
DF Makoto Soda, Makoto Soda (JY), Torino, Galvan, Shingo Takasugi (SR), Ryo Ishizaki, Hiroshi Jito Prioritize suitable defensive roles and coverage over moving a higher-ranked attacker out of position.
GK Genzo Wakabayashi, Ken Wakashimazu Choose a goalkeeper who fits your available lineup and development; the tier list alone does not establish a universal pick.

These examples reflect the position groupings in the tier list; check its player table for exact position and rarity details. The same list highlights SR players Shingo Takasugi and Shinji Sanada as strong options, so rarity alone is not a reliable reason to exclude a player.

How to use standout midfielders

Tsubasa Ozora: creation with scoring threat

Pocket Gamer describes Tsubasa as a complete midfielder with dribbling, passing, and shooting strengths. The list says his “Undead Wings” skill raises technique and dribbling attributes when he uses a skill. He can suit a midfield role that needs both progression and a scoring option, depending on your build.

Jun Misugi: dribbling and interception

The tier-list write-up highlights Misugi’s dribbling, interception, and shooting, and characterizes him as arguably the game’s strongest dribbling midfielder based on his passive. That mix offers a different midfield profile from a player used mainly to create or finish attacks.

Taro Misaki: advancing playmaker

Misaki is described as an advancing midfielder who can deliver a final pass or score. His listed passive can trigger an auto-dribble against a tackle, and successful dribbling boosts his shot attribute. Consider him when you want a midfielder who can carry the ball forward and remain a threat near goal.

These descriptions explain possible role fit; they are not independent performance tests. Player development can also alter performance and skill strategies, so compare your built versions rather than assuming every copy plays identically.

Should you use separate offensive and defensive lineups?

Game guidance describes separate offensive and defensive Dream League lineups. If those settings are present in your version, use them to reflect different priorities instead of trying to make one arrangement do everything. An offensive lineup can emphasize players whose skills support progression and scoring; a defensive lineup can prioritize defensive roles and interception. The sources do not establish exact formation names, optimal placements, or proven counters for either purpose.

An older guide also describes a Versatile Tactics mode with attacker-focused, defense-focused, and all-round-team tactics. Because that guide is older, verify that the feature and terminology still appear in your current game before relying on those labels.

How often should you revisit your formation?

Recheck the lineup when you obtain a stronger player, change a player’s development path, or alter your offensive or defensive priorities. The latest tier snapshot covered here is Pocket Gamer’s October 5, 2026 update for version 1.9.0; it may not reflect later balance changes or roster additions.
