Magic booster packs vary because they serve different purposes and because each set can use its own card pool, rarity mix, special treatments, and slot probabilities. A Play Booster is designed for both opening and drafting; a Collector Booster is aimed at collectors seeking premium treatments. For exact contents and odds, check Wizards of the Coast’s collecting article for the specific set and booster type.

Why Magic booster packs have different contents

There is no single contents list or odds chart that applies to every Magic booster. First, booster types have different jobs. Set Boosters emphasized a varied opening experience, while Draft Boosters used a more predictable rarity structure suited to Limited play. Play Boosters combine aspects of both: they are intended for drafting while allowing more variation in what a pack contains. Collector Boosters are a separate product with a premium collector focus. Wizards explains the Play Booster design in What Are Play Boosters? and describes the product categories in its MTG Product Guide.

Second, each set can configure its own cards and slots. A general Play Booster pattern is useful for orientation, but its details are not a promise that every release uses the same distribution. Wizards discusses how booster structure affects set design and rarity distribution in Nuts & Bolts #16: Play Boosters.

What you can generally expect in a Play Booster

Wizards’ overview describes a Play Booster pattern that includes commons, dedicated uncommon slots, a rare or mythic rare slot, a land, non-foil and traditional-foil wildcard opportunities, and a final slot that is not a playable card. In the first Play Booster implementation, for Murders at Karlov Manor, that last slot could contain a token, play aid, ad card, or art card. The article explicitly says some details can change from set to set, so treat the pattern as a guide rather than a universal checklist.

The Murders at Karlov Manor figures below are examples for that set’s Play Boosters, not odds for all current or future Magic packs:

  • Its rare or mythic rare slot was a rare six times out of seven and a mythic rare one time out of seven.
  • In one specified slot, the pack had an 87.5% likelihood of a main-set common, a 9.38% likelihood of a common or uncommon normal reprint from The List, a 1.56% likelihood of a rare or mythic rare normal reprint from The List, and a 1.56% likelihood of a Special Guests card from The List.
  • The non-playable slot was a token, play aid, or ad card 65% of the time, an art card 30% of the time, and a signed art card 5% of the time.
  • In the described configuration, two or more rares or mythic rares appeared 41% of the time, according to Wizards’ Play Booster design discussion.

These figures are tied to Wizards’ 2024 descriptions of the Murders at Karlov Manor configuration. They should not be used to estimate the contents of a different set’s pack.

Play Boosters and Collector Boosters serve different purposes

Choose by intended use, then check the named set’s details. Wizards positions Play Boosters for opening for fun and for drafting. Collector Boosters are the premium-focused option for people interested in collectible cards and treatments. Neither label alone tells you every card or treatment in a particular release; those specifics belong to the set’s collecting article.

Collector Booster Premium collector-focused contents and treatments The release’s collecting article or its entry in the set archive

For a set-specific comparison, look at the stated card count, rarity range, foil and special-treatment details, and any insert or extra. Do not assume one set’s pack format is a template for another.

How to find the exact contents for a set

  1. Identify the set and booster type. Confirm whether the product is a Play Booster or Collector Booster, and whether it is an individual pack or another product format.
  2. Open the set’s collecting article. Wizards publishes product-specific details. For example, the Foundations collecting article states that a Foundations Play Booster contains 14 Magic cards. Collecting Modern Horizons 3 provides a separate set-specific description.
  3. Use the official set archive if you are starting from the release name. The MTG Set Archive organizes release information so you can find the relevant set entry.
  4. Read odds as set- and product-specific. Apply a percentage only to the set, booster type, and slot described on that page. The official pages do not establish one universal statistic for every card type across all Magic booster products.

Examples in the announcement include increased rare opportunities and removing foil common and uncommon cards. These are announced future changes, not a description of every booster currently on sale.
