An ISP acquisition does not by itself mean your internet will stop, your plan will change, or you must buy new equipment. What happens depends on the deal, its regulatory status, your provider’s instructions, your contract, and local rules. Check the provider’s customer notice before making changes.

What usually happens to your service?

During a transaction, an internet provider may keep service, billing, customer support, and existing terms running as before. That is not a universal guarantee: a provider’s notice may change as a deal moves from announcement to regulatory review, approval, completion, and later integration.

For example, TalkTalk’s UK notice says broadband and phone service continue, customers need take no action, and their payment method and support channels remain in place. BT says most customers’ services continue for now while its transaction with TalkTalk is under regulatory review. These statements describe those providers’ current guidance, not the outcome of every ISP acquisition. TalkTalk customer notice; BT customer FAQ.

Will your plan, price, or contract change?

An acquisition alone does not establish that your monthly price, promotional rate, contract term, renewal date, or cancellation conditions have changed. In the TalkTalk transaction, the provider says the transfer does not change existing contracts or prices; leaving remains subject to the agreement’s existing terms and charges. BT says most customers’ billing and prices remain as they are for now.

Read any notice from your own provider and compare it with your contract. Look for the current price, the end date of a promotion, the contract or renewal date, and any explicit change to terms. Do not assume that a merger automatically gives you a penalty-free cancellation right or requires you to sign a new contract.

Do you need a new router or modem?

Usually, the acquisition itself is not a reason to replace equipment. TalkTalk and BT say customers in their respective UK transaction notices can continue using their current router and other equipment. A later network or plan change could raise a compatibility issue, but that is separate from the ownership change.

Could your biller, account, or payment instructions change?

A brand or legal company name can change even when the service continues. Check the name of the company on the account, whether your online login remains available, and whether payment instructions or the payment method have changed. Verify unexpected payment messages through the provider’s established website or phone number rather than using a link or number in an unsolicited message.

Notice requirements depend on the jurisdiction and situation. For example, California guidance requires 30 days’ written notice in a specified case where customers will receive bills under a different carrier name; it is not a general rule for every acquisition. What protections can regulators require?

Regulators may approve a deal with enforceable, transaction-specific conditions. Such protections do not automatically apply outside the jurisdiction or transaction named in the order.

What to check before switching providers

You can compare alternatives if your service or terms change, but an acquisition does not automatically make switching free or simple. Confirm availability at your address and review your contract’s exit terms. Also check installation or activation charges, equipment return instructions, compatibility, and effects on bundled phone or other services. The FCC’s 2017 order discusses these categories of switching costs as historical context; it is not a source of current prices or a present-day estimate of how many customers incur them. Checklist: what to do when your ISP announces a deal

  1. Identify the deal’s stage. Determine whether it has only been announced, is awaiting regulatory review, has been approved, or has closed. Guidance can change at each stage.
  2. Save the provider’s notice. Keep the notice and any later messages that specify customer actions, deadlines, outage windows, or migration steps.
  3. Review your account terms. Note your price, promotional end date, contract and renewal dates, and cancellation conditions; compare these with any written change notice.
  4. Check billing and access. Confirm the biller’s name, account login, payment method, and any revised payment instructions through a trusted provider channel.
  5. Confirm equipment requirements. Keep using your current equipment unless the provider gives an official, plan-specific replacement or compatibility instruction.
  6. Look for applicable protections. Check regulator notices and complaint options for your location and service type; transaction-specific conditions may not cover every customer.
  7. If considering a switch, calculate the practical steps. Verify address-level availability, exit charges, installation or activation costs, equipment return requirements, and bundled-service effects.
