Use your phone’s built-in screen-time controls to set daily app limits, schedule periods when distracting apps are unavailable, or pause them temporarily while you work. On iPhone, start in Screen Time; on Android, use Digital Wellbeing. Choose the setting that fits when you tend to get pulled in: a daily cap, a recurring break, or a short focus session.
Choose the control that matches your distraction
| What you need | iPhone | Android |
|---|---|---|
| A daily cap on social apps or video apps | Screen Time App Limits, for categories or selected apps | Digital Wellbeing App timers, set separately for apps |
| A recurring block, such as dinner or bedtime | Screen Time Downtime with a schedule | Digital Wellbeing Bedtime mode for evening routines; Focus mode can also be scheduled for selected apps |
| A temporary work or study session | Downtime can be scheduled, but Apple’s cited guide does not describe a timed break equivalent | Focus mode can pause selected apps, with a timed Take a break option |
| A website that keeps you scrolling in Chrome | Not stated in the cited Apple guide | Digital Wellbeing can set a daily timer for a Chrome website |
These controls have different boundaries. A daily allowance limits time; a scheduled block targets a recurring part of the day; Focus mode is for temporarily pausing selected apps and their notifications. Device menus and availability can vary, so use the Settings search field if a path differs.
Set limits on an iPhone with Screen Time
Set a daily limit for social media or video apps
- Open Settings > Screen Time > App Limits.
- Tap to add a limit, then choose a category such as Social Networking or select individual apps.
- Set the daily time allowance. You can customize limits for different days.
- Use Always Allowed in Screen Time to keep essential apps and contacts accessible.
Apple says Screen Time limits can be ignored by default once reached. Treat an App Limit as a boundary you can choose to respect, not an unbypassable lock.
Schedule a block for a recurring distraction window
- Open Settings > Screen Time > Downtime.
- Enable a schedule, then choose the days and start and end times—for example, during dinner or before bed.
- Under Downtime, turn on Block at Downtime if you want restricted apps blocked during the scheduled period.
- Review Always Allowed so calls, messages, and other essentials you need remain available.
Apple describes Downtime as leaving calls, messages, and apps you allow available. The Block at Downtime setting is the stronger scheduled restriction; without it, Screen Time limits may be ignored.

- SMART FEATURES - Includes app/website blocking, focus schedules, child mode, emergency exits, break timers, and even adult content blocking for complete peace of mind.
- AS SEEN ON SHARK TANK - Featured on national television for our innovative approach to helping people take back control of their screen time.

Check which Screen Time features your iOS version supports
Apple’s newer guide describes Time Allowances and Schedules, including a Social Media category, and says these features require iOS 27 or later on all participating Apple devices. Earlier iOS versions may use the Screen Time labels and controls described above instead. See Apple’s Screen Time scheduling guide and its iOS 27 guide to schedules and time allowances.
Pause distractions on Android with Digital Wellbeing
Set a daily timer for an app
- Open Settings > Digital Wellbeing.
- Choose App timers, select the app, and set the daily duration.
- When the timer runs out, Android closes the app and dims its icon. The timer resets at midnight.
Google notes that some work or school accounts might not support app timers. A timer can also be deleted to regain access before the next reset, so it is a useful limit but not a permanent lock.

Make bedtime less stimulating
Android Bedtime mode can run on a schedule or during a charging window. Google documents options including grayscale, a dimmed wallpaper, keeping the screen dark, and dark theme. The display changes can make the phone less inviting, while the schedule helps make the routine automatic.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Make the settings fit your routine
- Pick only the apps that cause the problem. Pausing every app can interfere with tasks you still need to do; leave practical essentials accessible.
- Choose a realistic daily cap. Start with a limit you can follow, then adjust it if it is too restrictive or fails to interrupt the habit.
- Use schedules for predictable moments. A recurring dinner, work, or bedtime window does not require you to remember to switch a control on each day.
- Check the trigger, not just the app. If short videos are reached through Chrome, use a Chrome site timer on Android as well as app controls where useful.
- Verify the boundary. After configuring a setting, check what happens when it is active and whether essential calls, messages, or apps remain available.
Feature names and paths can differ by Android manufacturer and OS version; some features may not appear on every device. Apple’s newer schedule and allowance features have the iOS 27 requirement described above. Built-in controls provide ways to set boundaries, but the cited help pages do not establish that they guarantee less screen time or treat compulsive use.
