Clean toys according to their materials and construction: hand-wash ordinary LEGO pieces, follow the exact Nerf blaster’s instructions, and launder washable fabric toys according to their care labels. In most homes, soap-and-water cleaning is enough; disinfect only when the situation calls for it and the toy can safely tolerate the product.
Cleaning versus sanitizing and disinfecting
These terms describe different goals. Cleaning removes dirt and germs; sanitizing reduces germs to levels considered safe under applicable standards; disinfecting kills remaining germs. The CDC says that, in most situations, cleaning with soap and water can remove most germs from surfaces. That is general surface guidance, not a toy-specific efficacy test. For ordinary household use, routine disinfection is generally unnecessary unless someone is sick or recently visited while sick. It may also be appropriate when someone in the household is at higher risk. When disinfection is warranted, clean visible dirt first, then use a product whose label supports the toy’s surface and intended use. Follow the label’s dilution, ventilation, protective-equipment, and wet contact-time directions; never mix cleaning chemicals. How to clean LEGO bricks and pieces
- Separate sensitive pieces. Set aside electronic components and other sensitive elements containing metal. LEGO recommends cleaning those with a cloth moistened with water and mild detergent without perfume or oil.
- Hand-wash ordinary pieces. LEGO recommends water no hotter than 104°F / 40°C and a soft cloth or sponge. Mild detergent may be added.
- Rinse and air-dry. Rinse thoroughly with clear water and let pieces dry fully away from direct sunlight.
Do not put LEGO pieces in a washing machine or dishwasher, or dry them in an oven, microwave, or hair dryer. Heat can change their shape, and LEGO specifically advises against leaving them in direct sunlight to dry. These instructions are from LEGO’s brick-cleaning guidance.

That guidance does not establish a universal disinfectant method for every brick, printed surface, sticker, or older element. Do not assume bleach or alcohol is safe for all pieces. If disinfection is necessary, verify compatibility for the specific parts before applying a chemical product.
How to clean a Nerf blaster
A blaster is not a loose plastic brick: its openings, moving parts, battery compartment, lights, or other electronics can make water and chemical compatibility model-specific. Find the instructions for the exact blaster using Hasbro’s Vortex Lumitron instruction page as an example of its product-instruction lookup; that page does not establish a general cleaning procedure for every Nerf model.

- For electronics, the CDC’s general recommendation is to follow the manufacturer’s cleaning instructions.
How to clean other hard-plastic toys
Start with the toy’s label or manufacturer instructions. If none are available, use a method suitable for the surface: the CDC describes soap and water or an appropriate surface cleaner for hard surfaces. Remove visible dirt before any sanitizing or disinfecting step, since soil can interfere with a chemical product’s effectiveness. Check that the product label supports the material and intended use, then follow all directions, including contact time.
Do not treat routine chemical disinfection as necessary for every household toy. The reason for cleaning, the toy’s construction, and whether anyone is sick or at higher risk should guide the choice.

How to clean plush and cloth toys
Check the sewn-in care label and manufacturer’s directions. When laundering is allowed, the CDC advises washing soft toys according to those instructions, using the warmest appropriate setting, and drying them completely. Set aside toys with electronics, delicate trims, or parts that cannot be laundered and follow their specific care instructions.
Childcare settings have different considerations from ordinary household use. The CDC’s early care and education guidance distinguishes cleaning from sanitizing and notes that toys and play surfaces used by infants or children may need sanitizing with a method appropriate to the item. That setting-specific advice should not be taken as a requirement to disinfect every toy at home.
