First identify what has failed: an eSIM that is missing or stuck activating needs setup checks; “No Service” points to coverage, roaming, or network registration; signal with no internet usually calls for checking the selected data line, roaming permission, and APN. Work through the checks below in that order, and avoid deleting or reinstalling a profile until your provider confirms its instructions.
Identify the failure before changing settings
Note the exact message on screen and which state matches your phone:
- The eSIM is missing: The profile may not have installed. Follow the provider’s setup instructions rather than troubleshooting mobile data.
- It says “Activating” or shows an activation error: Check plan and device eligibility, setup connectivity, and whether the provider needs to complete activation.
- It is installed but says “No Service”: The phone has not registered on a mobile network. Check destination coverage, roaming requirements, and network selection.
- There are signal bars, but no internet: Check which line is selected for cellular data, whether roaming is enabled for that line when required, and whether the APN matches the provider’s instructions.
Menu names vary by phone and operating-system version. On iPhone, look under Settings > Cellular or Settings > Mobile Service; Android labels and paths vary by manufacturer.

Check eligibility and setup prerequisites
Before trying to install the profile again, verify that the exact phone model supports eSIM, that it is unlocked if the provider requires an unlocked device, that the plan is active, and that the provider supports service in your destination. A phone can support eSIM in one regional model but not another, so check the precise model and provider requirements.

For iPhone setup, Apple says the phone generally needs a Wi-Fi network or hotspot and compatible, current iOS. Apple’s setup guidance also notes that some eSIM-only iPhone models in certain countries and regions can activate without Wi-Fi. Follow the requirements that apply to your model and location in Apple’s eSIM setup troubleshooting guide. Update the phone to the latest operating-system version available for it.
Do not repeatedly scan a QR code, delete the profile, or attempt a redownload without checking the provider’s instructions. Providers differ in how profiles can be installed again, and an unsuccessful attempt does not establish that a profile can be reused.

Refresh an installed line and the phone
If the profile appears in the phone’s cellular settings, confirm that its line is turned on. Then refresh the connection:
- Open the cellular or mobile-service settings and select the eSIM line. Verify that the line is enabled.
- Turn Airplane Mode on, wait briefly, and turn it off. This prompts the phone to look for a network again.
- Restart the phone and check whether the line registers.
- On iPhone, check for a carrier settings update and review Apple’s setup troubleshooting steps if activation still fails.
Turning the line off and back on or restarting can refresh the device connection; it cannot fix an inactive plan or missing provider-side provisioning.

Confirm destination coverage and roaming terms
Check that the plan covers the country you are in, not just the country where it was purchased. Some plans require data roaming to be enabled on the eSIM line; others have different instructions. Use the provider’s current setup guidance. For example, Orange Travel’s support information provides plan-specific guidance, but its settings should not be assumed to apply to another provider.
Try a supported network manually
If automatic network selection does not register, use the phone’s network-selection setting to choose a partner network listed by your carrier or eSIM provider. A manually selected network can help only if the plan is entitled to use it in that destination; do not assume every visible network is supported. Jio’s manual network-selection instructions are specific to its service.

Use radio-mode changes only when the provider recommends them
Some carriers suggest changing the preferred network mode, such as selecting LTE, as a troubleshooting step. This is carrier- and device-specific, not a universal eSIM requirement. Follow instructions for your provider and phone rather than changing network modes at random; T-Mobile’s roaming troubleshooting guidance is one carrier-specific example.

If you have signal but no mobile data
Select the eSIM as the data line
On a dual-SIM phone, make sure the travel eSIM is selected for cellular data, not merely installed or enabled. On iPhone, only one cellular data network is used at a time. Apple explains how to choose the line in its Dual SIM settings guidance.

Set roaming for the correct line
Enable data roaming on the eSIM line only if the provider’s plan requires it. Check the home SIM separately: enabling roaming there may trigger charges under its own terms. Roaming controls are line-specific on dual-SIM devices, so check which line’s settings you are changing.
Verify the APN with the provider
The access point name (APN) is provider-specific. Compare the phone’s APN with the exact value and instructions from the eSIM provider; do not copy an APN from another carrier, a forum post, or a different travel eSIM. If the provider says the APN is automatic or supplies no manual value, do not invent one. Orange Travel’s support information illustrates why provider instructions should take precedence over generic settings advice.
When to contact the provider
Contact the carrier or eSIM provider if the plan appears active but will not register, no supported partner network is available, the line remains unprovisioned, or the provider’s settings do not restore service. Ask support to confirm that the plan is activated, covers your destination, includes the required roaming entitlement, and is provisioned for a supported network partner.
Have the exact error message, destination, phone model, and relevant account or phone number ready. Provide the IMEI or EID only if support requests it, and use the provider’s official support channel. For iPhone setup failures, Apple also advises contacting the carrier or provider when its troubleshooting steps do not resolve the issue.
If the plan or device is not eligible
Only consider another plan or phone after confirming the cause. If the existing plan does not cover your destination, compare alternatives by destination coverage, supported partner networks, data-only versus voice and SMS service, activation timing, roaming requirements, APN instructions, and support availability. If the phone is incompatible or locked, check the exact model’s eSIM support and carrier-lock status before considering a replacement. A new plan will not correct a device issue or a provider-side activation problem.
