If you want to use original Sega Genesis cartridges, connect the console’s analog video output to a compatible retro video scaler, then connect the scaler to your TV over HDMI. The cable and scaler must match your Genesis model and its video signal. If you do not need original cartridges, a Genesis Mini or Mega Drive Mini 2 is a simpler HDMI-ready alternative with its own included game library.
Choose between original hardware and a mini console
| Option | What you play | Connection to a modern TV |
|---|---|---|
| Original Genesis plus scaler | Your original console and cartridges | Analog video from the console enters a compatible scaler; the scaler sends digital video to the TV. |
| Genesis Mini or Mega Drive Mini 2 | Games included with the mini console, not original cartridges | Connect the mini console to the TV with HDMI. SEGA’s 2022 announcement for Mega Drive Mini 2 listed a high-speed HDMI cable in the box and said it would include over 50 titles: SEGA’s announcement. |
A scaler converts the original Genesis’s analog signal for a digital TV; it is not a game console or an HDMI adapter that makes cartridges work by itself. The mini systems are separate HDMI-native consoles.
How to connect an original Genesis to an HDMI TV
- Identify your console and its video output. Genesis and Mega Drive models can differ in the signal and cable they support. Check the exact model before buying a cable or scaler.
- Choose a compatible analog video cable. Composite is a basic option, but RetroTINK says it produces lower-quality video than S-Video, component, or RGB. Its 5X Pro accepts composite, S-Video, component, RGB, and SCART; the console’s output and the cable must match the selected input. See the RetroTINK 5X Pro specifications.
- Connect the console to the scaler. Use the matching console cable and select the corresponding input on the scaler.
- Connect the scaler to the TV. Run a digital video cable from the scaler’s output to an HDMI input on the TV.
- Power the scaler and select the TV input. For the 5X Pro, RetroTINK specifies a USB power source capable of 5V/2A. Select the HDMI input used by the scaler on the television.
An HDMI cable alone cannot connect an original Genesis directly to an HDMI-only TV: the console’s analog signal needs compatible conversion first.
Which scaler should you consider?
RetroTINK 5X Pro: broad input support and output options
The 5X Pro accepts composite, S-Video, component, RGB, and SCART, and supports 240p input. RetroTINK lists output modes up to 1080p standard, with higher modes identified separately on its product page. The manufacturer specifies about 0.25 frames of latency in Framelock mode and 0.25–1.25 frames in Triple Buffering; these are vendor specifications, not independent measurements. Check the current 5X Pro product page for its supported modes and setup details.

- RGB SIGNAL REQUIRED, WHICH RULES OUT CLONE MACHINES: This adapter reads the RGB signal that an original console puts out, so it needs an unmodified original: for Sega Genesis Model 1, for Sega Genesis Model 2 or for NEOGEO. A clone, a replica or a heavily modified unit generally sends composite only, and the result there is sound with no picture. The adapter is also not built for Sega Master System or for Sega Saturn.
- TWO CONVERSION CABLES COME WITH IT, WHICH IS THE POINT: Those consoles do not all use the same video port, and a cable that will not physically reach the socket is where most orders for this kind of part go wrong. Two conversion cables ship with the adapter for exactly that reason, so one purchase covers all three machines instead of sending you back for a second connector.
- TWO BUTTONS SIT ON THE BODY OF THE ADAPTER: One steps the picture between the classic 4:3 shape and 16:9 widescreen, and the other steps the output between 720p and 1080p. Both are pressed on the adapter itself rather than buried in a television menu, so you can try the combinations on your own screen and settle on the one you like.
- WHAT ARRIVES, AND THE ONE PIECE THAT DOES NOT: The box holds the adapter at 7.5 cm by 4 cm on a 43 cm lead, two video conversion cables and one micro USB power cable. The adapter takes its 5 V over that micro USB lead, and the wall plug for it is not included, so count on a spare USB socket on the television or a charger you already own.
- PLUG IT IN AND PLAY, WITH ONE THING WORTH CHECKING FIRST: No driver, no software and no menu setup stand between the console and the television, so the adapter starts working as soon as both ends are connected. If sound arrives but the screen stays dark, the two usual causes are a console sending composite rather than RGB, and a micro USB lead that is not actually carrying power.
RetroTINK-2X Pro: a simpler option with a compatibility caveat
The 2X Pro accepts composite, S-Video, and component and line-doubles standard-definition signals. RetroTINK describes it as a legacy product and warns that Genesis composite output may be off-spec and may not work correctly. The maker recommends HD Retrovision cables for Genesis; confirm that the cable fits your particular console. Details are on the RetroTINK-2X Pro page.
RetroTINK-2X MINI: avoid assuming composite compatibility
RetroTINK explicitly does not recommend the 2X MINI for Genesis because Genesis—and possibly PAL Mega Drive—composite output may be off-spec and may not function correctly. Its warning is on the 2X MINI product page. Do not assume a generic composite-to-HDMI converter will work reliably with your specific console; check compatibility for the exact model and signal.

When the Genesis Mini or Mega Drive Mini 2 makes more sense
Choose a mini console if convenience matters more than playing original cartridges. It connects over HDMI and comes with games, so it avoids matching an original console’s analog output to a scaler’s input. SEGA’s 2022 announcement said Mega Drive Mini 2 would include over 50 titles and listed a high-speed HDMI cable. Regional naming, bundles, and availability can differ; the announcement does not establish current stock or retailer pricing.
How to make the choice
- Want to play cartridges on the original hardware? Use a scaler, and verify both the console’s video output and the required cable before choosing one.
- Want a straightforward HDMI setup and are happy with an included library? Consider a Genesis Mini or Mega Drive Mini 2 instead.
- Considering composite video? It is the simplest analog signal path, but it is lower quality according to RetroTINK, and the maker warns of Genesis composite compatibility issues on the 2X Pro and 2X MINI.
- Comparing scalers? Check accepted inputs, output modes, and the manufacturer’s stated latency alongside setup complexity. Published specifications are not a substitute for independent comparative testing.
